Not long ago, we participated in EDUCAUSE 2009 in Denver. Because we were delivering a presentation on instructional uses of Twitter, 1 our ears and eyes were wide open for other presentations mentioning social networking in general and Twitter specifically. And did we get an ear and eye-full! It seemed like everyone was talking about Twitter — mostly positively, with a few pointed criticisms of the perceived obsession people have with the tool.

Presented with students from the Department of Computing at Sheffield Hallam University #BETT2020 Our session outlined the students as partners project which considers the potential of special media for learning. The student-led 'Social Media for Academic Studies at Hallam' special interest group re-looks at the affordances digital and social media tools can provide in and out of the classroom; as a means to organise learning; and to showcase learning. Social networking services are increasingly being used by educators as teaching and learning tools that supplement traditional classroom environments as they provide new opportunities for enriching existing curriculum through creative, authentic and/or flexible non linear learning experiences. From chat rooms, discussion forums, blogs and wikis, services like Facebook, and/or virtual world’s like Second Life, social networking tools are being meaningfully added to curriculum. The use of social networking services in education has been shown to benefit education a number of ways by supporting social learning, constructivist teaching practices, authentic instruction, student centered learning, and on demand access to learning. More research needs to be conducted into the use of social networking services and other communicative Web 2.0 technologies in teaching and learning. This article explores the pedagogical usage of social networking site and features of social networking. This article also describes the challenges of opportunists to use the social networking sites in education.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
