Easter Sunday- the day Christ rose from the dead.
R.C.I.A candidates- they receive the sacraments of
Initiation at the Easter Vigil.
Veneration- reverence for the cross.
Cross- sign of Christ’s death.
Vigil- liturgy celebrating Sunday, or another solemnity
but which takes place the night before.
Paschal Candle- represents the risen Christ, death to
life, darkness to Light.
Love and Service- Jesus washes feet of apostles.
3. Important Information
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.
Lent lasts for 40 days.
Lent concludes on Holy Saturday (after
the Easter Vigil.)
Conversion means turning back to God
with all our hearts, a coming closer and
closer to Jesus Christ.
4. Important Information
Many of the Lenten readings at the
Eucharist are from the prophets of the
Old Testament.
Lenten practices that we follow in order
to move toward conversion are prayer,
fasting and almsgiving.
The word “Triduum” means 3 days.

The Holy Thursday service is called the
Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
On Good Friday, we remember Jesus’
suffering and death for humankind.
On Palm Sunday, we remember Jesus
entering Jerusalem on a donkey.
The Paschal Mystery is the passion,
death, Resurrection and Ascension of
Jesus Christ.

Holy Eucharist and Holy Orders are the
two sacrament instituted at the Last
Supper.
The only day during the liturgical year
when Mass is not celebrated is on Good
Friday.

Pope John Paul II- Pope from 1978-2005.
Loved Young people. Canonized more saints
than all other popes combined.
Bishop Oscar Romero- Bishop of El
Salvador. Assassinated in 1980 while
celebrating Mass.
Dorothy Day- Journalist; founded the Catholic
Workers Movement. Promoted Catholic
teachings and Social issues.

Thomas Merton- Poet, author; wrote
books about God; was a Trappist monk.
Jean Donovan and El Salvadoran
Nuns- Missionaries and martyrs. They
were murdered in El Salvador in 1980 on
the way home from the airport.
Sister Thea Bowman- Franciscan
sister. Taught elementary, high school
and college. Died from cancer in 1990.
