We will certainly offer you helpful information concerning the kind of respirators and their different executes, which will enable you to make a smart option. We aim to help you in every manner through our opinion, observation and personal faves when it involves getting the very best full face respirator. Two sorts of respirators individuals usually utilize; one is the most cost effective and disposable mask simply for solitary usage, while the other is reusable one. Reusable respirators are made with advanced cartridges for the filtering of air. They are likewise called ARP or air-purifying respirators, which again could be partitioned into two types- full-face respirators and half-mask respirators. They are made to suit different conditions or scenarios one needs to experience relying on his expert threats. One big difference of non reusable and multiple-use masks is that the very first one does not have the same kind of air purification strategy. One has to do adequate study prior to getting a mask as both the types function in different ways. One is air supplying, and an additional is supplied air respirators.

could reduce the need to wear a paint mask. Maybe you can use
alternative paints that are not hazardous to health and safety.
Surely you can get by with your repainting job without using
harmful chemicals. It is best to do your research and find out
the available options.
Relax and Take a Break
Using a paint mask can easily contain all the moisture and heat
inside, which makes prolong use very inconvenient. So, it is
important to take regular breaks to prevent too much heat. It
is recommended to take at least five to 10 minutes break for
every hour of work.
Wearing an Air Purifying Respirator
Renovating your home can be exciting, but could also be a
health risk if you don’t take necessary precautions. If you need
to repaint your interiors, you may think over if you need to
wear a paint mask . Wearing a mask to protect your mouth and
nose can be among the most crucial safety precautions that you
need to consider.
More often than not, you need to get rid of old paint by sanding
it off or do other kinds of preliminary works that will release
dangerous particulate in the air that could be very harmful
once inhaled. Hence, it is crucial to wear a paint mask if you
want to do the painting job on your own. You must make
certain that you are using the mask properly to get the best
protection you can have.

Choose the Right Type of Mask
It is also crucial to choose the right type of mask that you
are presently using to make certain that it is suitable for
the repainting job that you are doing. Usually, a disposable
facial mask is enough to provide you protection against most
particulates during the renovations and repainting. You can
learn this by reading the packaging, hence be certain to choose
properly. It is also advisable to select a mask with solid insert
so you can easily fit it into your face.
Shave First
Bear in mind that your facial hair may result to lose seal that
can create leaks. This is dangerous because this will make
you inhale dangerous particulates. Thus, it is recommended to
shave first before using the paint mask. Without facial hairs,
the mask will be tighter.
Choose Double Straps Paint Masks
Paint masks that have double straps have the ability to hold the
mask tighter, which forms a more fitting seal. Similarly, you
may need to put the mask before you wear goggles or any other

it can protect the wearer from breathing dust smokes and
fumes that are filled with poisonous lead. Even though
these respirators cannot provide protection against high lead
content, it is enough for common construction and industrial
workplace settings. This article covers the basics of a reliable
respirator as well as the primary requirements stipulated by
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Bear in mind that there is no need to wear a half face mask

requires that employers control lead levels. You need to use
respirators if the lead content in the air is 50 μg/M3 or more.
Also take note that not every person can wear a half face mask
respirator. They may put a lot of stress on the lungs and the
heart of some individuals. That is why it is recommended to
conduct a medical evaluation first to check if the workers can
safely wear an air purifying respirator. This is usually the case
for people with lung problems, heart complications, smokers
and anyone who find it hard to breathe while wearing a facial

The Difference between HalfFace Air Mask and Full-Face
Respirators
By Rafael on January 24th, 2014
For proper protection, it is important to use the right type of
respirator filters. Use N-100, R-100 or P-100 filters, which are
mainly used to shield away poisonous lead. If there are also oil
mists in the area, it is recommended to use P-100 filters. Take
note that filters are needed for other hazardous substances.
Similar to shoes, respirators are available in different sizes
and shapes. A half face mask should fit well to provide utmost
protection. The right size and shape for a respirator must be
chosen to be comfortable and snug-fit. An easy way to test the
fit is to shake your head. If the respirator stays in place, it is
well-fitted.
Employers are required by OSHA to test the fit of the air
purifying respirator. There are two types of fit tests. These
tests determine how much the mask leaks around the seal.
The qualitative fit test is cheap and easy to do. An odorous
chemical will be emitted around the respirator seal. If the
wearer can smell the odor, the respirator is not well-fitted. On
the other hand, the quantitative test requires using electronic
tool to measure how much the respirator is leaking. The main
advantage of this test is that it can determine how well the
respirator fits. This will provide you the chance to compare
various masks and choose the one that is suitable.
It is very crucial to take note that a half mask does not
guarantee full protection. It may leak too much to protect
against high lead content. Half-face masks can provide superb
protection if the amount of lead in the air in the workplace is
below (500 μg/M3).

In general, respirators can be divided into two main categories
– more affordable disposable air mask and recyclable air
filters that use expensive canisters to purify air. Recyclable
respirators are also known in the industry as Air Purifying
Respirators (APR), and is further divided into two subcategories – full-mask respirators and half-face air mask.
It is very important to be familiar on the types of air masks
you use in different workplace settings and types of hazards.
A disposable face mask doesn’t filter air like recyclable
respirators. Hence, it is best know more about them and do
your research to know when it is proper to use a disposable
maskor recyclable respirator.
Common air masks fit loosely over the mouth and the nose and
can protect the wearer from splashes as well as sprays. They
are used to prevent things to go inside your mouth, as well as
those that get outside of your mouth and nose. For instance,
these masks are normally given to a patient of respiratory
disease that is contagious through airborne transmission.
The primary disadvantage of a face mask is that it is not
effective in protecting the wearer from taking in small
airborne particulate because they are often not snug fit.
It is recommended to use on minor medical and surgical
operations.
Meanwhile, respirators provide all the advantages that an air
mask can offer. Aside from that, the tighter the fit of the
respirator allows the wearer to breathe the air that passes
through the filter material. This filter is particularly designed
to catch small airborne particulates and the wearer will safely
breathe clean air.
Similar to recyclable air filters and disposable air masks, halfface respirators and full-face respirators have their own set of
instances where using one type is much suitable. In general, a
half-face respirator must be used in workplace settings where
the eyes don’t need protection from the air or vapors that
are present in the environment. There are gases that may be
present in a hazardous area that can cause serious damage as
well as irritation to the eyes. Certainly, these instances would
call for the worker to use a full-face mask.
One of the downsides in using a full-mask respirator is that
the lens could be damaged after long-term use making it much

harder to see while working. Also in industrial painting, the
mask may also be covered with the paint spray. This too can
also obstruct the vision. If this is the case, you need to find a
lens covering that you can just attach to the air mask. You can
easily peel off the protective sheet after using.
Regardless if you are using a half-face mask or a full-face
respirator, you must always make certain that the mask has
the right fit for your face. It is crucial for employees to a fit
test before working in a hazardous area to make certain that
the mask can provide the proper protection that you need.
Once you use it properly, recyclable air filters may not only be
convenient but also an integral part of the worker’s personal
protective tool.

number refers to the percentage of one millimeter particles
that the mask removed during lab tests and can be rated 95,
97 or 100 percent.
The most common mask rating used by DIYers is N95 since
this provides the adequate amount of protection for most
home improvement projects. However, if you are dealing with
more toxic chemicals, you might want to get a painting mask
that has the highest rating of P100 which will filter out all oilbased and non-oil-based particles.
In addition if you are looking for a comfortable fit you
should buy disposable masks that have foam face seals or
those with exhalation valves that will make breathing while
wearing the mask easier. On the other hand, if you are more
concerned about the protection you get, choose masks that
have adjustable nosepieces that will give you a tighter fit or
consider reusable masks that have sealing gaskets since this
will protect you against toxic particles such as asbestos.
A chemical respirator painting mask has a chemical cartridge
with a carbon filter that absorbs vapors and gases and the
cartridge can be replaced once it is no longer effective. They
come in half-face and full-face variants depending on the level
of protection that you need,
These painting mask cartridges come in three types: chemical
filters that can protect you against vapors but not particles
since they don’t have a prefilter; dual filters that also have
a prefilter to remove particulates; and powered air purifying
masks that use a battery-powered fan that makes breathing
easier by blowing air into the filter. Choose the type of
cartridge that will protect you against the hazards you’ll be
facing based on the type of paint or chemical that you’ll
be using when you’re working. If you’re not sure, buy the
respirator that will provide you with the highest level of
protection.

Wearing a Spray Paint Mask
A spray paint mask can protect you against harmful fumes
from paint when you’re doing a home improvement project.
However, it is very important that you choose the right mask
as well as knowing how to use it safely. Here are some tips on
how to use dust masks safely to ensure that you are getting the
maximum protection from them so you can avoid respiratory
and other health problems.
How to Wear a Spray Paint Mask?
The correct way to wear a spray paint mask is to position the
mask over your mouth and nose and then attach the strap at
the back of your head; if there are two straps then refer to
the manufacturer’s instructions. Adjust the flexible metal band
on the bridge of the nosepiece with your fingers to make it
conform to the shape of your nose.

You can perform a quick fit test to determine if you have placed
the mask properly. Once the mask is on, put your finger over it
and inhale deeply. The front of the mask should move inward.
Then exhale deeply; the mask should move outward. If it fails
these tests, adjust the mask again to improve the fit. While the
basic disposable dust mask that you buy at the hardware will
never provide you with a complete seal, if you fit it properly
then it will provide you with adequate protection.
Choosing the Right a Spray Paint
Mask
To ensure that you are getting an adequate level of protection,
make sure that you are buying a spray paint mask that is
rated for the particulates you will face. For the majority of
particulates, a mask that has an N95 or R95 rating will be
enough. On the other hand, if you will be exposed to lead or
asbestos, you need to get a mask rated N100 since this will
provide the highest level of protection.
If you will be exposed to ammonia, organic vapor or acid gases,
a dust mask will not be enough to protect you and you need to
get a respirator that has a chemical cartridge with a filter that
will remove these when you breathe.
Safety Considerations
• If the mask that you are using becomes clogged you will
probably find it hard to breathe when you’re wearing
it. If this happens, dispose of the mask and use a new
one. Don’t reuse disposable masks more than once or as
instructed by the manufacturer.
• Don’t let your mask get wet. Many masks lose their
effectiveness once they become wet. Dispose of it and get
a new one.
• If you are using a respirator with a filter and you detect
some strange odors while you are using it, replace the
filter using the instructions on the package. You should
also do the same if you feel irritation in your throat, lungs
or nose.
• If the spray paint mask is broken or the respirator that
you are using has broken parts, don’t use them any more
since they are no longer effective.
Wearing an Air Purifying Respirator
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
mandates that workers wear respirators while working in a
dangerous workplace. An air purifying respirator can protect
workers against harmful particles in the air such as smokes,
gases, mists, fogs or sprays. These hazards may cause dizziness
or serious lung infections.
By following the standards and regulations established by
OSHA, thousands of deaths can be averted year after year.
Professionals who are working on hazardous environment
including specialists on hygiene, safety and emergency
response need air-purifying respirators as an important
tool for their respiratory protection programs that doesn’t
compromise comfort and performance.
Meanwhile, any air purifying respirator that is certified under
the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) requirements found in Part 84 can be used for
negative pressure respiratory protection to shield away fumes,
dusts, aerosols and mists that are subject to the stated
limitations of the filter. Air filters are basically labelled with P,
R or N and a number that indicates the efficiency such as 95,
96 or 100.
However, there is an exception to the usability when a
substance that is certain to OSHA standard such as lead calls
for specific filtration efficiency. If a workplace setting requires
High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter to fulfill the
requirement, it is best to choose a filter that is labelled with
the number 100.
An air purifying respirator is one of the best tools to protect
workers. This can be a full-mask filter that can also protect the
eyes or a half-mask filter that can protect the nose. Because
air purifying filters can be expensive, there are also disposable

respirators that can also effectively filter out particulates but
eventually break down due to wear and tear.
Respirators that can purify the air are generally composed
of high-quality filters and cartridges that can eliminate
particulates from the air by passing the air through the
air-cleaning element before it can reach the user. However,
there are respirators that don’t have canisters or disposable
cartridges.
In buying a respirator, make certain that you are purchasing
the right type if your purpose is to purify air. There’s a
possibility that you may buy particulate respirators that
can also capture particulates such as mists and dusts but
cannot provide respiratory protection against vapors and
gases. Particulate respirators usually have N-100, N-99 or
N-95 rating. Using letter N is an indicator that the respirator
is non oil-resistant and the number signifies the percentage of
airborne particles that were filtered out from the respirator.
An air purifying respirator is often used in workplace settings
that contain hazards from dangerous gases and particulates.
With different nature of vapors, the canisters used in these
respirators are particularly designed for specific hazards.
Hence, it is very crucial that employers as well as employees
know what kinds of gases could be present in the site and know
which respirator to choose to deal with the safety concerns.

viruses. They are also used in certain industrial workplace
settings to protect the workers from harmful particulates.
Can I use an N95 mask while in public?
Yes. An N95 respirator is designed to protect the wearer from
airborne particulates. Aside from blocking sprays, splashes
and large droplets, the mask is also designed to prevent the
person from taking in minute airborne particles.
What does N95 indicates?
An air-purifying respirator with an N95 label indicates that if
subjected to comprehensive testing, the mask can effectively
block 95% of very small particulates. If these masks are
properly fitted, the filtration capacity of N95 masks are higher
compared to common face masks. However, even a snug-fit
N95 mask cannot totally eliminate the risk of infection as well
as illness.
Can a child wear an N95 respirator?
Wearing the right type or respirator is an important safety
precaution. Be certain that you understand the important
aspects of respirators before you even enter a hazardous work
setting.
N95 respirators are only designed for adults and not for
children. Because a proper fit should be achieved, smaller
facial structure of a child will lead to leaks. Hence, the mask
cannot provide full protection.

The industries where the respirator is recommended for use
include industries such as food and beverage manufacturing,
automotive, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, military maintenance
and metal fabrication and production. However, the 3M N95
should not be used in workplaces where oil-based particles are
produced since the mask will not provide protection against
them.
However, workers using the respirator should still follow the
same precautions that they need to take with other particulate
respirators. These include:
• Shaving or trimming facial hair such as thick beards
and sideburns as well as mustaches since these might
prevent the mask from fitting securely on the worker’s
face, creating the risk that hazardous particles might
penetrate the respirator.
• Seeking the advice of a doctor or other health
professional before using the respirator if the worker has
health conditions involving the respiratory system such
as asthma and lung disease, as well as cardiovascular
problems.
• Performing fit checks before using the respirator to
ensure that it fits securely on the worker’s face to provide
the maximum level of protection. For example, once the
mask is on the worker should cup his or her hands in
front of the mouthpiece and inhale deeply. If the worker
feels that the mask moves inward then the respirator fits
securely; if not, then they should adjust the mask and reperform the test until it passes the fit test.
3M Ultimate FX Full Facepiece Reusable Respirator FF Series,
Respiratory Protection
The 3M N95 is one of the most advanced particulate
respirators available on the market, offering workers in
hazardous workplaces superior protection against pollutants
that could damage their health. The lightweight respirator is
also comfortable to wear, helping ensure that the worker will
be able to use it for a long period of time and that it will
not affect his productivity. And since it is disposable, there
are no concerns about possible degradation of the respirator’s
protective functions since the unit will be replaced with a new
one as it wears down.
To ensure outstanding protection capability, the 3M N95 uses
the company’s proprietary electrostatic-charged microfiber
filter. This makes the respirator appropriate for use in
workplaces where processes such as grinding, sweeping and
sanding are performed which create a lot of dust as a
byproduct. In addition the respirator is also rated as being
able to reduce workers’ inhalation of certain hazardous
biological particles such as mold, the bacterium that produces
tuberculosis and bacillus anthrasis.
• Not reuse the 3M N95 beyond the time recommended
by the manufacturer’s instructions. Reusing disposable
masks increases the risk that the respirator may no
longer be effective in protecting the worker against
hazardous particles.

3M Ultimate FX Full Facepiece Reusable Respirator FF Series,
Respiratory Protection
3M respirators provide outstanding protection for workers
in hazardous environments, provided the appropriate one is
chosen for the particular hazard they are facing. In addition,
there are a host of other factors to take into consideration when
choosing which respirators are the appropriate ones to use for
a certain workplace. Here are some of the things you have to
consider:
• Fit. The 3M respirators that you select should not
only provide the proper fit for the worker using it as
determined by a qualitative or quantitative fit test. In
addition, the mask chosen should also be comfortable for
the worker to wear since they will have it on for hours
at a time while in the workplace. If the worker removes
the respirator for any period of time due to discomfort,
it may expose him to contaminants that could cause
respiratory and heart problems.

should include training the workers in the proper use of the
respirator, including how to conduct fit tests to determine
if the device is still working effectively as well as how to
maintain reusable respirators to ensure that they remain in
good working order.

• Protection factor. To determine numerically what 3M
respirators will provide adequate protection against the
hazards present in the workplace they will be used, divide
the concentration of air contaminants present by the
occupational exposure limit or OEL. This will give you
the hazard ratio of the workplace. Then look for models
that have protection factors that should be at least equal
to but ideally greater than the hazard ratio.
• Respirator characteristics. You should look at the
instructions of the respirator you are considering to
see if they are able to help protect workers against
the particular hazards they will be encountering in the
workplace environment. These must be always carefully
reviewed before use to ensure that the respirator is
appropriate to the place where it will be utilized.
In addition, there are some restrictions to the use of 3M
respirators that the user should keep in mind:
• They should not be used in environments where the
concentration of contaminants present an imminent
danger to the user’s health or life as well as in
places where the concentration of the contaminants is
undetermined or where the level of oxygen is below 19.5
percent.
• They should not be used by workers with facial hair,
deformities or other conditions that would prevent the
respirator from making direct contact with the wearer’s
face since this would compromise the integrity of the
respirator and risk contact with contaminants.
• They should not be used in environments where the
contaminants exceed the maximum levels established by
the relevant regulatory agencies.
• The respirator should only be used as directed and not be
abused in any way since this could damage the protective
device and expose the user to harm.
If employers are using 3M respirators they should set up a
management program that adheres to the basic requirements
of the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard. This program
