This document provides a summary of several scenes from a film that demonstrate examples of ideology. It describes shots of a military vehicle driving through Afghanistan with music playing, showing the diegetic sound coming from a CD player. It notes that a close-up of a glass of whiskey in the vehicle signals someone of higher authority is drinking, as shown by a nervous young soldier. Further shots reveal the whiskey drinker as a man with a relaxed, arrogant attitude who is surprised to find a female soldier driving. His comments imply it is unusual to have a woman in this role.
3. • At the beginning of the
first scene it shows a
couple of modern
army vehicles going
through the desert in
Afghanistan; playing
music which you would
think was non-diagetic
until it jumps to the next
shot into the vehicle.
4. • The next shot is inside
the vehicle, of a CD
player which is on the
floor, this show that the
diegetic sound is
coming from that.
• This is unusual for the
viewer to see as they
would think as it is the
military it would have a
serious atmosphere.
5. • The close up of the
glass of whiskey
indicates it is a unusual
thing to see in a army
vehicle.
• It also shows that the
person holding it is
someone important.
• The shot gives the
audience a sense of
mystery, as they don’t
know who is holding it.
6. • The young soldier looks
over slightly at the
person holding the
glass.
• His expression on his
face indicates that he
is nervous.
• This tells the audience
that the person drinking
the whiskey is at a
higher authority to the
soldiers, due to his
anxious behaviour.
7. • Including the clues from
the glass of whiskey and
the young soldiers
behaviour, the first short
of the man shows the
audience that the man is
more superior to the rest
of the soldiers.
• The audience knows
immediately that he is
rich and successful.
• From his relaxed attitude
and loose collar, he
comes across as
arrogant.
8. • The soldier driving the
vehicle is woman which the
man is surprised about, “oh
god you’re a woman”. This
shows that it is unusual to
have a woman as a soldier
and goes against
stereotypical male soldiers.
• He says “I’d apologise but is
that what we’re going for
here, I thought of you as a
soldier first”
• This makes the audience
think that she is not a typical
woman and especially as
she is driving she is given a
more powerful role.
9. • The soldier in the front
asks the man if the man
if he went “12 for 12
with last years max
cover models”. This
gives a negative
betrayal on woman.
10. • And as the woman is
smiling about shows
that it is a normal view
on women.
• However the audience
looks at the man as if
he has achieved
something, which goes
with societies norms.
