Drew Lynd CI 350 Wednesday 4:00-6:20 Rules and Regulations of Soccer
Basic Rules Chart
Starting Out Each team consists of 11 players. One goalie and 10 outfield players. Teams are usually split in formations consisting of defenders, midfielders, and forwards.
Start of Game and During Play At the start of each game or if there is a goal scored, there is a kick-off from the center circle. After kick-off, the ball will be in play until it goes out of bounds or the referee stops play. There are usually two 45-minute halves in a game. This time can vary for different age groups or regions.
No hands, please Even if you know nothing about soccer, you have an idea that you do not use your hands, unless you are the goalie. Hand balls are anything that touches a body part from the finger tips to the shoulder.
Throw-Ins A throw-in is taken when the ball crosses the sideline and leaves the field. Basic rule for a throw-in is to keep both feet on the ground, and throw the ball with both hands over the head. For teaching purposes, we will practice more than once.
Corner Kicks & Goal Kicks A corner kick or goal kick is taken when the ball leaves the field across the end line If the offensive team kicks it out, it is a goal kick; if the defensive team kicks it out, it is a corner kick Goal kick is taken from anywhere inside the penalty box, and the corner kick is taken from the nearest corner Goal Kick Corner Kick
Fouls If it looks like a foul, it probably is! A player can not kick, trip, jump at, charge, strike, push, hold or spit at an opponent. Keep in mind that soccer is a contact sport Bumping or shoulder-to-shoulder while competing for a ball is not a foul, until the arms or elbow come up. Bad Good
Red and Yellow Cards Punishment for fouls committed. Yellow card is almost a warning, you can receive two yellow cards that are equal to a red Red card is ejection, and possible suspension of next game Referee’s can give ‘straight’ red cards if necessary before yellow
Direct or Indirect Kick? It is a direct kick if you can score by directly kicking the ball on goal. Indirect kick has to be touched by two people on the same team before scoring. Both types of kicks are taken after a foul has been committed. Usually, another teammate will stand nearby to ‘quick touch’ it during an indirect kick For a direct kick, a player can shoot directly at the goal
