What

 “A Master Course is a
     complete course consisting
     of well designed learner
     centered activities and
     resources…

    Refer: Steven Parker http://goo.gl/ulQvK
typically developed by a team of teachers
at time, effort and cost”
EDITING TEACHER
                      NON- EDITING TEACHER
                                             MANAGER

Course Roles and Permissions
Locked down courses = TENSION
…typically developed by a team of teachers
    Turn editing on = TENSION
SOLUTION: Manage course
activityediting rights
 ‘Free up’ the creativity of
 non-editing teachers using:
  ‘Groupings’
  Multiple copies of activities
 ‘Teacher Role’ on individual activities
 Still maintains quality control
What is a Grouping?

 A Grouping is an activity setting to control
viewing access for specific student groups.

 i.e. Control of who sees what activity!
 Course Administrator able to:
 Lock down core activities and resources as a ‘Master
      course’ grouping.
 Configure a teacher’s course level editing privileges
      against their allocated grouping.
 Teachers able to:
 View each other’s activities using a course groupings
      filter.
 Managers able to:
 Assign well designed activities and resources to the core
      ‘Master course’ grouping.
 Groupings can improve the Master Course concept
 Teachers can edit courses without impacting each
  other
 Fosters collaborative culture around course design
  incidentally
 Allows course administrators easy management of
  course lifecycle
 Return on investment of time cost and effort in
  developing courses.

  1. Utilising ‘Master Courses’ to support collaboration (Moodle 2)STEVEN PARKER – Freelance Educational Technologist – http://innovationarchitech.com@sparkered
  2. So what is a master course?“A Master Course is a complete Moodle 2+ course consisting of well designed learnercentred activities and resources…
  3. A master course is typically developed by a team of teachers at time, effort and cost.
  4. Typically the team of teachers creates a learning sequence of resources and activities to engage students. To add new resources or activities to a master course they simply click ‘Turn editing on’…
  5. …then pick and choose the most appropriate resource or activity to achieve their learning design aims.
  6. Typically an LMS has the following permissionsEditing teacher - Can edit all parts a courseA non-editing teacher - Cannot edit a courseA Manager has editing rights over the course but is not referenced as teacher of the master course
  7. Upon release of a typical course for delivery there is an inherent tension between editing teachers and non editing teachers. Locked down courses creates tension for non editing teachers as they cannot customise the course with their own ideas and activities to suit their students. There is tension with editing teachers as any editing after course release impacts all users of the course in unexpected ways.
  8. SOLUTION: Manage course activityediting rights‘Free up’ the creativity ofnon-editing teachers using:‘Groupings’Multiple copies of activities ‘Teacher Role’ on individual activities Still maintains quality control
  9. What is a Grouping?A Grouping is an activity setting to control viewing access for specific student groups.i.e. Control of who sees what activity!Groupings needs to be activated by the Site Moodle admin under experimental settings.
  10. Typically a master course can contain multiple copies of the same activities each managed by an individual teacher for different student groups. In the example above one teacher provides assessment information for Cert IV students and another for Diploma student. To duplicate activities for a new Cert III student groupthey simply click the x2 button.
  11. Assign Non-editing teachers ‘EDITING’ permissions at an activity level
  12. Controlled visibility based on the activity’s GroupingFor example: What student is shown or hidden can be controlled This screen grab shows the ‘The Assessment Information’ for Cert IVStudents only. The Diploma assessment information is not available.
  13. NEW MOODLE 2 FEATURE RECOMMENDATION: Assign course editing privileges against GroupingsCourse Administrator able to:Lock down core activities and resources as a ‘Master course’ grouping.Configure a teacher’s course level editing privileges against their allocated grouping.Teachers able to:View each other’s activities using a course groupings filter.Managers able to:Assign well designed activities and resources to the core ‘Master course’ grouping.
  14. Assigning course editing privileges against Groupings can improve the Master Course concept outcomes and benefits:Teachers can edit courses without impacting each otherFosters collaborative culture around course design incidentallyAllows course administrators easy management of course lifecycle Return on investment of time cost and effort in developing courses.
  15. will be talking about the site and course administration process to configure Moodle at MoodleMoot 2012
