Working is the only way
to stay sane.
Create a work / life balance that allows you to work hard and stay
healthy. I once went on a 3 day work bender, and had a nervous break
down and moved back to Japan. Now I live in an asylum and work
everyday from 9:00 to 6:00 across the street in my studio.

Let your work speak for itself.
Yayoi Kusama
Create what you think is important, and let the audience come to
their own conclusions.

Design is democratic.
I love to design for everybody. I’ve designed everything from snow
shovels to trash cans. And I believe that everybody should have
beautiful things in their life.

Work harder than everybody else.

If a client asks for some ideas, give them 30 sketches. I believe in
pluralism. I work on several projects at the same time and in many
different disciplines.

Groups of people congregating on a
subway platform inspire the way I group
people in a dance performance.
Observing on a subway platform is a great way to understand people
interact. I apply this little ethnographic study to my performances to
make them feel authentic

The creative process begins
with collaboration.
Helen Pickett
Creating a dance performance is a conversation between the choreographer
and dancer. Knowing who will be performing your work is an important
part of the process. Especially if the dancer is has great ideas and in invested
in making the piece better.
