15. The Legend of the Cherokee Rose
There is a story to the Trail Of Tears, it is called
"The Legend of the Cherokee Rose." Along the way
of the Trail Of Tears the woman were becoming
weak and had thoughts that they couldn't take
care of their children. They would cry and cry, the
men were afraid they too would lose their strength
and would not be able to care for their children
and family. One night the men went and asked the
Creator to help the women and take their pain. The
next day the people walked along the places where
the women had cried and saw beautiful flowers
blooming out. The flowers had become a symbol of
the Cherokee's sufferings, it was also said to be a
gift from the Creator. The seven leaves on each
stem represent the seven Cherokee clans that
made way, the gold in the center of the flower
represent the gold taken from the Cherokee lands,
and the white petals represent the Mother's tears.
