Unemployment in Australia across all age groups, continues on the upward trend that
began in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in 2008. The GFC affected both
males and females in the youth population resulting in long-term unemployment which
the Australian Government and local communities are still trying to overcome .

thoroughly discouraged in the long-term, as they wanted to start

5. HOW TO OVERCOME YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT
Qualifications Skills Work experience Personal connections
To overcome Youth Employment, Jonas Prising in the RSCA Journal (March 2015) suggested
that students should be advised in their latter stages of school about the importance of
becoming job ready. This will help increase their eligibility to join the workforce and help
decrease the youth unemployment rate.
With the use of updated technology and big data, youth have to be reminded to be conscious
of their social media platforms which reflect on their professionalism to join the workforce in
the short-term rather than the long-term.
The Australian Government and other organisations are structuring programs to help
young people develop skills to use in the workforce some of these programs include
Jobactive, Melbourne City Mission and National Network.

According to the Sensis Social Media Report (May 2015) 79% of 18-29 year olds checked
social networking sites at least once a day. Although this is frowned upon by many in society,
more than half of job vacancies are advertised on the internet/newspapers online.
The SpotJobs Generational report (2015) published the results of a survey which showed that it was
currently difficult to find employment but presumes that the strain would lessen in the upcoming 12 months.
