MIC07 Oct9th. Presentation is composed of PPT slides and in-world meetings with a learning environment expert and a virtual environment instructor (meetings not recorded here). The goal of this presentation is to increase awareness in higher education of affordances present in current evolutions of web 2.0 tools such as participatory and connective technology in community experimentation in synthetic worlds like SL. Author was not yet knowledgeable of the SaLamander project then.

Good afternoon and welcome to Augmenting the MERLOT tradition with MUVE affordances. My name is Sabine Lawless-Reljic. I am a doctoral student in the SDSU-USD joint program in Education, with a concentration on educational technology. We will join Dr. Allen in Second Life at the second half of this presentation. My professional experience, academic background and consulting opportunities have led my research interest in the role and impact of games in education. More specifically, the role of today’s computer games and virtualities in teaching and learning. I’ve trained educators to integrate web-based tools in their pedagogical routine for adult literacy and in foreign language teaching. I’ve created innovative hybrid programs and curricula approved by Sacramento for the private industry. This summer, I’ve started doing some consulting with the French ministry of education on technologically-enhanced schooling and with the European Commission on the use of Second Life as a preview to web 3.0-like global communication and impact on education and research methods. I hope to bring the same excitement to MERLOT today. I am departing from the traditional handout format. see Next slide-
