2. LINE
“Lines are everywhere. You can see
lines in the grain of a piece of wood
or in the cracks on a sidewalk. Lines
are used to create words, numbers,
and symbols. They are also used to
create art. In drawing, line is an
element of art that is the path of a
moving point through space.”
-Arttalk, page 70
3. The four main kinds of lines are
horizontal, vertical, curvy and zig zag.
14. Zig Zag Lines
Zig zag lines show
excitement and action.
They are very
eye-catching.
18. SHAPE
“All objects are either shapes or forms.
Rocks, puddles, flowers, shirts,
houses, chairs, and paintings are all
shapes and forms.”
-Arttalk, 98
22. FORM
Shape is 2-dimensional. Form is
3-dimensional.

26. TEXTURE
“Every surface has a texture. Texture
is the element of art that refers to
how things feel, or look as if they
might feel if touched. Texture
includes the slick, smooth surface of
ice, the bumpy, rough surface of
brick, and the prickly surface of a
scrub brush.”
-Arttalk, page 171
42. VALUE
Value, simply put, refers to how
light or how dark things are. It
also shows contrast between
lights and darks. A sharp
contrast between light and dark
is called chiaroscuro.
48. RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT
“Rhythm is the principle or art
that indicates movement by
the repetition of elements.”
-Arttalk, page 200
52. BALANCE
“A work of art must contain
balance. Balance is the
principle of art concerned
with equalizing visual forces,
or elements in a work of art.”
-Arttalk, page 228
