Dr. Richard Cooper is the Director of Disability Services at Harcum
College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He is also the Founder and Director of
the Center for Alternative Learning and Learning disAbilities Resources,
organizations dedicated to providing educational and social support to
children and adults with learning disabilities, problems and differences.
He is an internationally recognized lecturer and expert on alternative
instructional techniques and tools for reading, writing, math,
and study skills. He has authored a number of books and articles
describing the use of these techniques and tools. He speaks nationally
and internationally about a wide range of learning problems and
instructional techniques to help both children and adults improve their
skills. He maintains a private practice through which he provides
assessment, counselling and tutoring of children and adults. He was a
member of the Observer Delegation from the United States to the 1997
UNESCO Conference on Adult Education in Hamburg, Germany. He is a
founding member and current co-president of the National Association
for Adults with Special Learning Needs. Most recently, he co-authored a
book entitled Test Anxiety,
A Student Manual and Teacher’s Guide (2009).
Professor Cynthia Northington-Purdie holds a Ph.D. in psychological
development from New York University, a Master of Arts in educational
psychology from Montclair State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree
in psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Professor NorthingtonPurdie is a psychologist and life coach at William Paterson University of
New Jersey. She has taught a variety of courses including educational
psychology, applied child psychology, the psychology of classroom
management and the philosophical and psychological foundations of
education. She also has the distinction of having been William Paterson
University’s coordinator for the National Council of Accreditation for
Teacher Educators (NCATE). Before joining the university faculty, she
enjoyed a long career as a teacher of both regular and special education
in New Jersey’s public schools. She provides educational services to
schools and organizations, conducts staff development workshops and
symposia for various school districts across country on a variety of topics
including: behavior management, contemporary classroom

management options, parental involvement, organizational strategies for
inclusion and mainstreaming. She routinely assists schools in
constructing school-wide classroom management priorities. She is
interviewed frequently on television, radio and for print media on a
variety of current issues in psychological development.
Barba Aldis PATTON, Ed. D, is an Associate Professor of Curriculum and
Instruction in the School of Education and Human Development at the
University of Houston-Victoria, Victoria, TX USA. She received the
inaugural Research Award for the School of Education and Human
Development for 2013. Barba received the outstanding workshop award
at the 2013 Canadian International Conference on Education and
received the honor of having the top journal article in the National
Social Science Association for 2012 along with three colleagues. She is a
member of a system (UH) collaborate striving to improve math skills
with educationally disadvantaged fifth grade students. Barba is the
founding (and present) newsletter editor for the American Association of
Mathematics Teacher Educators of Texas. Presently she is on the
Executive Board for National Social Science Association. She was the
recipient of the university’s Outstanding Service Award. As a former
school administrator, her research interests are teacher quality,
educational equity, mathematics education and online education. She
was the founding coordinator for a center to assist teacher candidates
be successful with their certification tests. She has published numerous
articles during the recent years on the state, national and international
level (refereed). She has presented presentations at local, state, regional,
national and international conferences for many years. She was a
regional director for the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a
member of the board of directors for the American Association of
Mathematics Teacher Educators. She has also served on the Texas State
Mathematics textbook selection committee, state committee to review
the ‘End of Course Algebra II” items, and numerous other state
endeavors. She truly enjoys teaching and often teaches mathematics
methods courses and graduate research courses. She is president of the
local chapter of the Texas Faculty Association and is active in faculty
government serving as a senator for the School of Education and Human
Development.
