WHAT IS PRODUCT DESIGN?
Product design is the process of creating a
new product to be sold by a business to its
customers.
NEW PRODUCTS AND SERVICES are the
LIFEBLOOD of an organization. Designs can
provide competitive edge by bringing new
ideas to the market quickly, doing a better job
of satisfying customer needs, or being easier
to manufacture, use and repair.
STEPS IN KNOWING WHAT PRODUCT DESIGN IS:
1. COMING UP WITH THE IDEA

NEEDS BASED- Looking at things that would help
make our everyday lives easier by fulfilling a
specific task. This can even be building on or
improving an existing item.

IMAGINATIVE THINKING- Some designers focus
more on using their imagination, their own
research and observation of the world around
them to come up with their product design ideas.
STEPS IN KNOWING WHAT PRODUCT DESIGN IS:

2. BRINGING THE PRODUCT TO LIFE
A number of design ideas will be
discussed including the materials best suited
for the product, the technology required for
its production and the way that the product
will meet the user’s needs.
Once all of the design elements have
been addressed, and all necessary
refinements have been made, the product
will go into production.
STEPS IN KNOWING WHAT PRODUCT DESIGN IS:

3. SELLING THE PRODUCT

Once the product has been designed and
the important elements of how it should look
and feel have been addressed, there are two
ways that a product designer may bring the
idea to the public.

They might decide to sell the product to a
client or have been contracted to come up with
the idea. That client will then manufacturer the
item and sell it to their customers.
STEPS IN KNOWING WHAT PRODUCT DESIGN IS:

4. NEW TECHNOLOGY NOW MAKES THE
   PROCESS EASIER

Combining science, art and technology, a
product designer comes up with new ideas
for items and then goes through the process
of making them a tangible item.
EFFECTIVE DESIGN PROCESS:
1. Matches product or service characteristics with

   customers requirements.
2. Ensures that customer requirements are met in
the simplest and least costly manner.
3. Reduces the time required to design new
   product or service.
4. Minimizes the revisions necessary to make a
   design workable.
Two Categories of Product Design
 1. DEMAND-PULL INNOVATION happens
when there is an opportunity in the market to
be explored by the design of a product. This
product design attempts to solve a design
      problem.
 2. INVENTION-PUSH INNOVATION happens
when there is an advancement in intelligence.
This can occur through research or it can
occur when the product designer comes up
with a new product design idea

CONCURRENT DESIGNS
  FORM DESIGN
Refers to the physical appearance of the product
  – its shape, color, size, and style.
  FUNCTIONAL DESIGN
Is concerned with how the product performs.
    Three performance characters: RELIABILITY,
    MAINTAINABILITY & USABILITY

DESIGN QUALITY REVIEWS
 FAILURE MODE & EFFECTS ANALYSIS
is a systematic approach to analyzing the
causes and effects of product failures. The
objective FMEA is to anticipate failures and
  prevent them from occurring.

  FAULT TREE ANALYSIS
is a visual method of analyzing the
interrelationship among failures. FTA lists failures
and their causes in a tree format using a hatlike
  symbols.

eliminate unnecessary features and functions in
 product designs.
