A READING FROM THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON 3: 1-9
Read by Sue Ann Elite
1The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
and no torment will ever touch them. 2In the eyes of
the foolish they seemed to have died, and their
departure was thought to be a
disaster, 3and their going from us to be their
destruction;
but they are at peace. 4For though in the sight of
others they were punished, their hope is full of
immortality. 5Having been disciplined a little, they
will receive great good, because God tested them
and found them worthy of himself; 6like gold in the
furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt
offering he
accepted them. 7In the time of their visitation they
will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the
stubble. 8They will govern nations and rule over
peoples, and the Lord will reign
over them forever. 9Those who trust in him will
understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him
in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy
ones, and he watches over his
elect.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

PSALM 24: 1-6 (Tone VIII.1)
The earth is the LORD’S and all that is in it, *
the world and all who dwell there-in.
For it is he who founded it upon the seas *
and made it firm upon the ri-vers of the deep.
“Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? *
and who can stand in his ho-ly place?”
“Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, *
who have not pledged themselves to falsehood nor sworn by
what is a fraud.
They shall receive a blessing from the Lord *
and a just reward from the God of their sal-va-tion.”
Such is the generation of those who seek him, *
of those who seek your face, O God of Ja-cob.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son:
  and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be:
  World with-out end A-
  men.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION 4: 1-6a
Read by Darryl Nakamoto
1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the
first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and
the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the
new Jerusalem, coming down out
of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for
her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the
throne saying, “See, the home of God is among
mortals. He will dwell with
them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God
himself will be with them; 4he will wipe every tear
from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning
and crying and pain will be no
more, for the first things have passed away.” 5And
the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I
am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this,
for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6Then he
said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the
Omega, the beginning and the end.”

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Alleluia
   Choir: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia
All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia
Cantor: Leave us not, O our God / that in the day of
judgement it may please thee to place us
in the number of the Saints and blessed ones:
                      O King most blessed.
All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
             according to John 11: 32-44.
All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.
32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him,

she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you
had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who

came with her also weeping, he was greatly
disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said,
“Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord,
come and see.” 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews
said, “See how he loved him!” 37But some of them
said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind
man have kept this man from dying?” 38Then Jesus,
again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a
cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said,
“Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead
man, said to him, “Lord, already
there is a stench because he has been dead four
days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if
you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41So
they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward
and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me.
42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this

for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they
may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said
this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound

with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth.
Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Homily
Anthem O sing joyfully – Adrian Batten
O sing joyfully unto God our strength; make a cheerful noise unto the
God of Jacob. Take the song, bring hither the tabret, the merry harp
with the lute. Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, even in the time
appointed, and upon our solemn feast-day. For this was made a statute
for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. (Psalm 81:1-4)

We Offer Our Gifts to God
Offertory Hymn 275 “O what their joy and their glory
                                              must be”
Prayer over the Gifts: Holy and mighty God, we give
you thanks for the triumph of Christ in the lives
of all his saints. Receive all we offer you this day,
and help us, like them, to run our course with
faith, that we may come to your eternal kingdom.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Eucharist: God’s Spirit Transforms Our Gifts
“People of all ages and denominations who are baptized into Christ
are invited and encouraged to share in communion. If you will not be
receiving bread and wine, we would be pleased if you would join us
at the Lord’s Table for a blessing.”
Eucharistic Prayer 3 p. 198
Proper Preface p. 224
The Lord’s Prayer (said) p. 211

The Breaking of the Bread
Celebrant: We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
All: We, being many, are one body,
for we all share in the one bread.

Communion Hymn 282 “Let saints on earth in concert sing”

Prayer after Communion: Lord of hosts, we praise your
glory reflected in your saints. May we who share
at this table be filled with the joy of your eternal
kingdom, where Jesus is Lord, now and for ever.

Music Notes:
In 1977 the American composer Dale Wood and jazz pianist
George Shearing created a volume of organ settings of early
American folk hymns entitled Sacred Sounds from George
Shearing. Over a period of 11 weeks Shearing had recorded a
series of improvisations at the piano. After the tapes were
transcribed to paper, Shearing visited Dale in his studio. Dale
spent hours at the organ making suggestions of registrations and
textures, while Shearing with his critical ear listened for
accuracy. This morning’s organ preludes are from this set of
pieces.
Léon Boëllmann (1862-1897) moved in the best circles of the
French musical world, and as a pleasing personality, he made
friends of many artists and was able to give concerts both in
Paris and the provinces. Boëllmann became known as "a
dedicated [organ] teacher, trenchant critic, gifted composer and
successful performer ... who coaxed pleasing sounds out of
recalcitrant instruments". His best-known composition is Suite
Gothique in four sections, of which the Menuet is the third.
Boëllmann composed it in 1895, two years before his premature
death at age 35.

A Special Concert here next Sunday
Poetry complements music at Remembering, our concert
next Sunday the 11th at 4 pm. Two readings will be featured -
"In Flanders Fields" is familiar to everyone, but the second
poem is something special in that it was written in 1930 by
William James Robinson (father of Helen Taylor) in the
aftermath of World War I in which his father served and did not
return. Mr. Robinson later enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air
Force at the beginning of World War II. Our lead singers, choir,
organ, reader Dr. Neville Reid and piper Rob Crabtree will
present a varied programme of both sacred and secular music, a
fitting tribute to our war veterans and to those who did not
return. Please join us and bring your friends and family (no
charge for children under 16) - tickets will be available
following today's service at $8 (they will be $10 at the door)
- and enjoy a glass of sherry after the concert.

  • 2. (From the COLLECT for ST. BARNABAS) Welcome to St. Barnabas (Chester) Anglican Church. The Church in the Marketplace Embracing the Community 10:30 AM HOLY EUCHARIST Our 10:30 AM Worship Service begins on page 185 of the green Book of Alternative Services. (Stand as you are able.) Organ Preludes “Jerusalem, My Happy Home” and “There Is a Happy Land” - George Shearing The Gathering of God’s People Opening Hymn 276 “For all the saints” Service Music: David Hurd Greeting Collect for Purity p. 185 The Gloria p. 186 Collect of the Day: Almighty God, whose people are knit together in one holy Church, the mystical body of your Son, grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Children’s Focus led by The Rev. Dr. Harold Shepherd The Story of God’s People A READING FROM THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON 3: 1-9
  • 3. Read by Sue Ann Elite 1The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. 2In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, 3and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. 4For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. 5Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; 6like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. 7In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. 8They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. 9Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People: Thanks be to God. PSALM 24: 1-6 (Tone VIII.1) The earth is the LORD’S and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell there-in. For it is he who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the ri-vers of the deep.
  • 4. “Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? * and who can stand in his ho-ly place?” “Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood nor sworn by what is a fraud. They shall receive a blessing from the Lord * and a just reward from the God of their sal-va-tion.” Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Ja-cob. Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: World with-out end A- men. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION 4: 1-6a Read by Darryl Nakamoto 1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.” 5And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this,
  • 5. for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.” Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People: Thanks be to God. Gospel Alleluia Choir: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Cantor: Leave us not, O our God / that in the day of judgement it may please thee to place us in the number of the Saints and blessed ones: O King most blessed. All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 11: 32-44. All: Glory be to thee, O Lord. 32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” 38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said,
  • 6. “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Homily Anthem O sing joyfully – Adrian Batten O sing joyfully unto God our strength; make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob. Take the song, bring hither the tabret, the merry harp with the lute. Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, even in the time appointed, and upon our solemn feast-day. For this was made a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. (Psalm 81:1-4) Affirmation of Faith – The Apostles’ Creed p. 189 Prayers of the People led by Fiona Strachan Confession & Absolution p. 191 Sharing Christ’s Peace (All stand) Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. All: And also with you. (The members of the community, ministers and people, may greet one another in the name of the Lord.
  • 7. We Offer Our Gifts to God Offertory Hymn 275 “O what their joy and their glory must be” Prayer over the Gifts: Holy and mighty God, we give you thanks for the triumph of Christ in the lives of all his saints. Receive all we offer you this day, and help us, like them, to run our course with faith, that we may come to your eternal kingdom. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Eucharist: God’s Spirit Transforms Our Gifts “People of all ages and denominations who are baptized into Christ are invited and encouraged to share in communion. If you will not be receiving bread and wine, we would be pleased if you would join us at the Lord’s Table for a blessing.” Eucharistic Prayer 3 p. 198 Proper Preface p. 224 The Lord’s Prayer (said) p. 211 The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Communion Hymn 282 “Let saints on earth in concert sing” Prayer after Communion: Lord of hosts, we praise your glory reflected in your saints. May we who share at this table be filled with the joy of your eternal kingdom, where Jesus is Lord, now and for ever. Amen.

Deanery Cycle, St. Barnabas, Chester Parish Cycle, Our Outreach ministry Outreach & Advocacy Cycle, Samaritan House Community Ministries, Barrie & Street Outreach Services, a LOFT ministry Music Notes: In 1977 the American composer Dale Wood and jazz pianist George Shearing created a volume of organ settings of early American folk hymns entitled Sacred Sounds from George Shearing. Over a period of 11 weeks Shearing had recorded a series of improvisations at the piano. After the tapes were transcribed to paper, Shearing visited Dale in his studio. Dale spent hours at the organ making suggestions of registrations and textures, while Shearing with his critical ear listened for accuracy. This morning’s organ preludes are from this set of pieces. Léon Boëllmann (1862-1897) moved in the best circles of the French musical world, and as a pleasing personality, he made friends of many artists and was able to give concerts both in Paris and the provinces. Boëllmann became known as "a dedicated [organ] teacher, trenchant critic, gifted composer and successful performer ... who coaxed pleasing sounds out of recalcitrant instruments". His best-known composition is Suite Gothique in four sections, of which the Menuet is the third. Boëllmann composed it in 1895, two years before his premature death at age 35.   

Dr. Harold Shepherd or any member of the Leadership Team. We would love to direct you to the appropriate Ministry Chairs of any of the following: the Chancel Guild , the Outreach Program, the Sunday School, the Day Care Board, the Sides Teams, the Coffee Hour, the Lay Visitors, the Readers and the Choir. A Special Concert here next Sunday Poetry complements music at Remembering, our concert next Sunday the 11th at 4 pm. Two readings will be featured - "In Flanders Fields" is familiar to everyone, but the second poem is something special in that it was written in 1930 by William James Robinson (father of Helen Taylor) in the aftermath of World War I in which his father served and did not return. Mr. Robinson later enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the beginning of World War II. Our lead singers, choir, organ, reader Dr. Neville Reid and piper Rob Crabtree will present a varied programme of both sacred and secular music, a fitting tribute to our war veterans and to those who did not return. Please join us and bring your friends and family (no charge for children under 16) - tickets will be available following today's service at $8 (they will be $10 at the door) - and enjoy a glass of sherry after the concert.   
