ICC1 3.2: Decoding Code Phrases Sentence style
Code phrases Words that have a specific meaning to the writer but have multiple meanings to reader. My aunt is nice. My third grade teacher was bad.
Decoding Replace the code phrase with: Specific details. Description. Concrete examples.
My aunt is nice Buys me ice cream. Takes me out for tofu scramble. Takes me shopping. Takes me to the museum. Plays Scrabble. Plays dungeons and dragons.
My third grade teacher was bad Came to class drunk. Gave homework everyday. Always skipped reading. Read too much. Had bad breath.
You try! Review your informal writing. Look for code phrases. Replace them with: Specific details. Description. Concrete examples.
Sentence types There are four basic sentence types. Sentence variety improves your writing. Uniform sentences create a monotonous tone. The tone of this is dull. The sentences are all simple sentences. This creates a repetitive structure. This fails to represent the connections between ideas. This puts readers to sleep.
Sentence variety There are four basic sentence types. Using a variety of sentence types allows writers to vary their voice and tone and it allows writers to represent relationships between their ideas. Because I am using a variety of sentence types, the tone of this paragraph is better. When we vary our sentence structure, we can vary our voice and tone and we can better represent the complexity of our ideas.
Simple sentence Simple sentence: Subject verb. There are four basic sentence types.  I like ice cream. We dance.
Compound sentence:  Compound sentence: Subject verb conjunction subject verb. Using a variety of sentence types allows writers to vary their voice and tone and it allows writers to represent relationships between their ideas.
Complex sentence:  Complex sentence: Introductory phrase, subject verb Because I am using a variety of sentence types, the tone of this paragraph is better.
