The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN) conducted a survey in April 2013 the discover the impact that being involved in volunteer advocacy and/or the development of public policy has on cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and family members. 51 people completed the survey. Findings were that patient advocacy generally has a positive impact on the self-image of those doing it, that many volunteer advocates felt better, prouder, more useful, more hopeful, more effective and more powerful. Still others felt less angry, less anxious, and less sad. But some survey respondents did feel sadder, angrier, less hopeful and less content. CCSN recommends that organizations ensure that cancer patients involved in advocacy activities receive skills to help them and support to deal with the often slow-moving and sometimes frustrating healthcare, cancer care and government systems in Canada.

An assets approach to health builds on the strengths of individuals and local communities and views them as co‐producers of health and wellbeing. This session describes how assets and co‐production approaches are already building healthier communities and explores how this will change the way we tackle the big health challenges for Scotland.

WORLD HEALTH COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATES Campaign Development Workshop Izhevsk 22-24 SEPTEMBER 2009 Background Paper and Planning Template Franklin Apfel World Health Communication Associates Ltd - 2 - Background Coordinators and key stakeholders from Cherepovets, Dimitrovgrad, Izhevsk and Stavropol are being were convened in this third training session of the We Choose Life Youth Against HIV AIDS Project to explore ways in which they can develop campaigns that will address identified needs and gaps in current HIV /AIDS communications, enhance HIV/AIDS literacy amongst key target groups, especially youth; “engage the unengaged”; overcome obstacles and strengthen the reach and impact of current prevention and treatment services. This campaign development workshop builds on the Stakeholder and Youth Volunteer Network activities to date; in particular the youth behavioural surveys. The workshop will serve to help each of the cities finalise campaign plans and will utilize data collected by each city prior to the meeting see campaign development planning questions below. The three day workshop will be include sessions on communications as a determinant of health, formative communication research, issue framing, an advocacy framework , practical campaign planning exercises, issues related to social marketing, working with media, media advocacy, and campaign evaluation. There will be both lectures, group work and discussion sessions. Workshop Objectives The overall aim of the project is to reduce the disease burden related to HIV/AIDS amongst youth in participating cities. The key objective of the workshop is to assist each city stakeholder team to agree and finalise plans for a youth focused HIV/AIDS communication campaign that will raise awareness and stimulate healthy behaviors, choices and policies. As a secondary benefit of this process the workshop aims to enhance participants’ capacities in health communications, communication related research, advocacy, social marketing as well as working with media. It is further anticipated that the skills developed for this specific project should be generalisable to other key public health communication challenges. Pre-workshop activities- Some questions to answer Each city is asked to carry out a series of tasks that is aimed at collecting data needed for effective campaign planning. Reach city will customize their own campaign plans aimed at enhancing HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment information, education and public awareness (and supportive policies) by stimulating demand for information and engaging and strengthening the capacity of health leaders, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and information mediators, e.g. health professionals, media, policy spokespeople, NGO advocates, and private sector advertisers, to respond effectively. - 3 - The reason communications is being emphasized relates to the fac.

Most mental illnesses begin in adolescence or early adulthood – the vital time in life when we establish our independence. Mental illness can derail this process with long-lasting effects. We know that the earlier we can engage a young person in treatment the better their outcomes – but young people are the least likely to seek help from mental health services. This is not helped by the separation of services at age 18. The good news is that we know that early intervention makes a difference in getting young people well and keeping them well. Early intervention teams have been established for psychosis in England for the last 12 years. Psychosis is a serious mental illness affecting 1-2% of the population, with about 500 new cases every year in the Oxford AHSN area. Early intervention in psychosis is a specialist, community-based service providing medical, psychological and family-based treatments. It helps get young people back to work or education and keeps an eye out for any early signs of relapse so that they can be prevented. Early intervention teams are highly valued by young people and their families. They also save the health service money by keeping people well and getting them back to work. The Early intervention in mental health network will make sure that this best practice is in place across the Oxford AHSN region with the highest standard of care provided everywhere. We also aim to spread this early intervention model across other conditions (such as eating disorders, personality disorder, autistic spectrum conditions) to help more young people. World class research is being undertaken in Oxford AHSN and across England into early psychosis – both into the causes and to trial new treatments. We aim to make this research available to every patient being seen by our early intervention teams. We will also look to develop new innovations and technologies that could improve the experience of young people receiving mental healthcare.
