3. Fractions Did you know that 5 out of every 4 students have trouble with fractions?!?!? Wait…..does that make sense?? Sometimes fractions can be confusing, let’s look at how to work with fractions. Fractions
5. Numerator Denominator Four equal parts, so the denominator is four. We only have one unit of these equal parts, so the numerator is one. Fractions
6. Numerator Denominator Four equal parts, so the denominator is four. We only have two units of these equal parts, so the numerator is two. Fractions
7. Numerator Denominator Four equal parts, so the denominator is four. We only have three units of these equal parts, so the numerator is three. Fractions
8. Numerator Denominator Four equal parts, so the denominator is four. We have fours units of these equal parts, so the numerator is four. Fractions
10. Simplifying Fractions Factor the numerator Factor the denominator See if anything cancels to one Simplify 1015 Simplify 8𝑥20𝑥 Simplify 280960 Simplify −1824 Fractions
12. Dividing Fractions Change the problem to multiplication using the reciprocal Multiply straight across The reciprocal of a number is found by switching the numerator and denominator of the number Find the reciprocal of the following numbers: 1.) 12 2.) 56 3.) 7 Fractions
13. Dividing Fractions To divide by a fraction, we multiple by its reciprocal. Fractions
14. Adding or Subtracting Fractions If the denominators of the two fractions are the SAME, add or subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator. 57 −37 Fractions
15. Adding or Subtracting Fractions If the denominators of the two fractions are DIFFERENT, we need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. This is called the least common denominator (LCD). Find the LCM of Fractions
16. Adding or Subtracting Fractions Now add the following fractions. Subtract: 45 −13 Fractions
