Project Identification: City of Hope Arnold and Mabel Beckman Building Mockup
Duarte, California
Project Summary: Architectural Testing was contracted to perform on-site testing at the above
referenced project. One water penetration test was performed on a Bumperite® scaffold tie
installed into plaster cement mockup test wall. The specimen tested met the performance
requirements listed herein.
Test Methods: Tests were conducted in accordance with the following:
ASTM E 1105-00, Field Determination of Water Penetration of Installed Exterior Windows,
Curtain Walls, and Doors by Uniform or Cyclic Static Air Pressure Difference. (Uniform
static air pressure difference was employed during these tests).
ASTM E 331-00, Standard Test Method for Water Penetration of Exterior Windows,
Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference
Pre-Test Inspection:
A visual inspection of the designated test area was performed prior to testing. The test area
was compared to adjacent wall sections on the mockup. No obvious deficiencies or
anomalies were observed.

Test Procedure:
The perimeter of the chamber was attached and sealed to framing members at the interior
side of the wall between the studs.
The chamber was equipped with a centrifugal vacuum pump, air flow meter, and a pressure
sensing device to maintain the desired air pressure differential across the assembly.
Water penetration tests were conducted at 15.0 psf pressure differential while
simultaneously spraying water on to the exterior face of the assembly at the required rate of
5 gph/ft2. During testing, the interior face of the test area was inspected for water leakage.
Testing continued for 15 minutes.
The interior wall cavity adjacent to the test specimen was open allowing visual access.
Performance Criteria: Provided by Bumperite Waterguards LLC
Water Leakage:
ASTM E 1105-00: Water penetration shall be defined as penetration of water beyond a
plane parallel to the glazing (the vertical plane) intersecting the innermost projection of the
test specimen, not including interior trim and hardware under the specified conditions of air
pressure difference across the specimen. Any such water penetration shall constitute failure
of the water penetration resistance test. It shall also constitute failure if water penetrates
through the perimeter frame of the test specimen. Water contained within drained flashing,
gutters, and sills shall not be considered failure.
ASTM E 331-00: Water penetration is defined as penetration of water beyond the vertical
plane intersecting the innermost projection of the test specimen, not including interior trim
and hardware, under the specified conditions of air pressure difference across the specimen.
Failure also occurs whenever water penetrates through the perimeter frame of the test
specimen. Water contained with drained flashing, gutters, and sills is not considered failure.
