2. Baron Pierre De
Coubertin
• Baron Pierre De Coubertin was born in france on the 1st january
1834-1937
• After being banished for 4 centuries De Coubertin was apart of the
committee that brought back the now modern olympics. After this
accomplishment De Coubertin was named the father of olympics.
•
3. Olympic Flag
• The five-ringed symbol "represents the union of the five continents and
the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic
Games." Baron Pierre de Coubertin conceived of both the symbol and
the flag. Not coincidentally, Coubertin is the founder of the modern
Olympic Movement. The Olympic Committee adopted the flag in 1914,
and it was first flown at the 1920 Antwerp Games.
• The colours of the flag are black, green, yellow, blue, red
• The old lotto sign was a remake and a copy of the olympic flag, there
was also much debate of the colours and what place they would go in
4. Mascot
• This years mascot for the 2012 london olympics is a 1 eyed strange
looking creature with many interesting features. The london
olympics mascot was invented by Iris, a london based creativity
agency.
• This years olympics mascot was made with many features, it’s head
was built to represent the medals contestants are rewarded. it’ arm
bands represent all 4 olympic rings. A taxi light on it’s head
inspired by the London's black taxis.
• And last of all and my personal favorite feature, it’s eye contains a
camera which lets Wenlock (the mascot) record everything that is
going on in his eyes for the world to watch
5. Ceremonies
• There are 3 main ceremonies throughout the olympics. Opening
ceremony, medal ceremony, and last of all the closing ceremony
• The opening ceremony is the end of the torch relay. The torch relay
is a process where the torch is taken around the world
• During the medal ceremony the top 3 contestants for each category
earns themselves a medal in recognition of there accomplishment.
1st place earns a gold medal, 2nd place earns a silver medal, and
3rd place earns a bronze medal
6. Host Cities
• The first ever olympics (since Baron Pierre De Coubertin and the
committee reintroduced the olympics) were held in Athens Greece.
This was in 1896. That was over 2700 years ago.
• Back then when the olympics were in Athens, there were nowhere
near as many sports as there are today. But I find this better
because the means that the olympics go for longer and also there is
a wider variety to like and enjoy
• There have been all together 27 summer olympics
• London has hosted the games 4 times including the 2012 olympics
