A lesson I taught on Quadratic Graphs. It's not very good without the teacher, but anyway....

1. Bell work Draw these axes and plot the points (3,4), (1,2), (-1,0) and join them up. What can you say about the line?

2. Connect the Learning You have learned a large number of ways to solve quadratic equations. Today we’re going to learn the fourth way

3. Learning objectives To be able to draw a quadratic graph To be able to solve quadratic equations from the graph

4. Input y = x ² + 3x - 5 When x is 0, what is y? When x is 1, what is y? When x is -1, what is y? How else could we organise this?

5. y = x ² + 3x - 5 Draw a table for x and y Use x from 3 to -6. Fill in values for y. Plot the points on your graph and join up to make a smooth curve. What is the minimum point? Estimate the solution to x ² + 3x – 5 = 0 Input

7. Demonstrate Here is the graph of y = 2x ² + x -3 Write down an estimate of it’s minimum point Write down an estimate of the solution to 2x ² + x -3 = 3
