- 1) You can enter the library two ways:2) Through the front door3) Or via the website.Here, we’ll be talking about the features of the library that you can use if you’re on the Sippy Downs campus.Of course, you’ll also use the online library as well! 4) To gain access to it, click on the Library Resources link at the bottom of the left hand menu of the university’s home page.I’ll tell you where you can learn more about the online library at the end of this session.
- When you come in the front door, you’ll see an array of computer and service desks. We call this area the Information Commons. The first service desk you’ll see is the Information Desk staffed by reference librarians.Academic skills advisors are rostered to sit beside the librarians for part of the day to assist students with writing skills. You can take your drafts to them for some feedback.Behind the librarian, is the IT Help Desk. Behind the Information Desk, you’ll be able to see the Copying & Printing Services Desk. Near the exit door, you’ll see the Loans Desk. Nearby is the self-service loans checkout machine. Connected to the loans desk is the Reserve room. We store a copy of most of your essential readings for use inside the library only here.
- This is Sue, one of our librarians, reminding us all that the J Wing is a silent study area. There is a phone there to call for assistance if you need it. We do enforce silence in this study area.Other silent study spaces are: the Reserve room & the Library Lab on the entry level.
- Strange looking desk, don’t you think?1) This is the self-checkout unit for you to check out your own loans. The library staff will help you if you have any hassles – just like at Woollies! 2) Make sure you print out the receipt, as this gives you a record of the due dates, and prevents anyone else from adding loans to your account.Just remember to print out your list with the due dates. This finalises your loans, and prevents anyone else from putting loans onto your account.
- 1) If you have anything that you can’t handle at the self-checkout unit, the staff at the loans desk will always help you out. This is also where you can pay for any fines.
- Yes, unfortunately we do have fines for overdue loans. 1) A notice will be sent out to your USC email address, so make sure you check it out regularly.Warning: 3 Day Loan books incur heavy fines – a dollar a day from the first day overdue. So – be alert!
- What about internet access in the library?1) We have about 120 computers in the information commons, 2) with wifi3) & internet access. You start the year with 200MB download. This replenishes at the rate of 20MB a day. So it’s a good idea to be cautious with large downloads, so you don’t run out.4) You can borrow laptops for use in the library – there are 20 available. 5) You’ll be able to get IT help at the IT student help desk. This desk operates from 10 – 2 during term times. You’ll find the students who work there very helpful when your password isn’t working, or your laptop won’t access the wi-fi.6) All the computers have the Microsoft Office Suite plus some study-related packages.7) There are 17 computer labs across the campus.
- The librarians are rostered for the Information Desk to help you with questions related to finding books etc via the library catalogue They also can help you with the more challenging task of finding scholarly journals that are stored in the online databases. You’ll find that the librarians can help you in a wide variety of ways.
