How does your Media product represent particular social groups?
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
The social group I represented was
famous rock artists
2. Professional Magazines
I started observing the various semiotics in Rock
magazines. On this Kerrang cover image it can be
seen that there is a certain level of individualism in
the artists. Each band member strikes their own
pose and also wear significantly different clothes.
The lead singer stands and this indexical sign
shows individuality and importance. However, the
attire of all the members are casual, like what a
teenager or a young adult would wear. The band
members however, are of course older than the
target audience which is 15-24 year olds. The fact
that they dress casually like younger people not
only relates to the audience on its own but also
shows gives the band a rebellious look.
3. Professional Magazines
Another example is in this cover of NME. All the
band members dress differently to show
individuality. However, in this cover rather than
wearing casual and shady attire to relate to the
audience, the members wear fashionable
designer looking clothes. They have been
positioned this way to fit the cover. All of them
wear sunglasses and the light coming from
behind really highlights their fame and
importance.
4. Professional Magazines
From these examples, and many other magazines, I concluded that I would
represent my social group as individual, rebellious and glamorous. I wanted to
bring out their fame through their attires and poses.
5. My Magazine
I dressed my models casual in attire and leather jackets as this
is an indexical sign to show rebelliousness. In the cover photo,
the model portraying the lead singer stands in front to show
the importance of his individuality in the band. I thought
sunglasses would be a nice touch to add glamour into the
models.
In another photo, I made them all strike rock star poses to
represent their fame and recognition. I also tried to have the
other two models’ poses support the lead singer. The finger
pointing to the screen was the idea showing the models as
superior and reaching out to the audience.
8. Extended Task
I designed free included posters for my magazine for which I studied
different rock artists. I had the opportunity to include instruments in
these posters so I decided to edit my models to resemble playing at a
concert. The social group they represented were too rock artists so I made
them look talented, involved in their surroundings and glamorous.
