The library webpage provides students with many resources for research and study including asking a librarian for help, finding research guides, searching for articles and books, and checking their library account. The library uses discovery tools and Springshare products to integrate resources and allow one-search capabilities. Research guides are tailored to student needs and courses. The library also has a mobile site and apps for accessing resources on phones and tablets. QR codes link students to resources and their status. Citation tools like EndNote Web and Noodle Bib help students organize and format citations.
2. The library webpage is the
launching point for our
students
From here they can
• Ask a Librarian
• Text a Librarian
• Email a Librarian
• Chat – Know it Now
• Find a Research Guide
• Look for articles
• Books
• Journals
• Check their library
account
3. Shawnee State introduced a discovery product this
year – OhioLINK will be adopting one in the next
few months
The Discovery Layer allows us to integrate our
purchased resources into a “one search” or Google-
like search experience.
We use Springshare products for our study
guides, text, chat, reference statistics tool.
4.
5. • Research or subject guides allow our librarians to
create subject and/or course specific web pages
tailored to our students needs
• Subject guides are open to anyone, but authentication will be required for
licensed resources.
6. MOBILE SITE & APPS
Our library has a mobile
web site – formatted for
small screens.
Students can search for
articles, books and
email/text a librarian
EBSCOhost has a mobile
app for both iPhones and
Android platforms.
7.
8. Most of our journal packages allow pairing with
mobile devices for quick access and use on the go.
These require authentication, which is usually done
by email to the device and could require that an
app be downloaded to run the platform.
9. Some ebooks are more user friendly than others
Every platform offers a text search of some kind
Some offer highlighting and Post-it note features
Personal accounts and preferences can be set
10.
11.
12. Records for….
Print materials, microfiche and all physical
materials in the collection
All ebooks that we purchase from OhioLINK, on
our own and free ebook content
All electronic journals either from OhioLINK or our
subscriptions
All of our purchased databases, LCO databases
(INFOhio content) and all OhioLINK shared
databases
13. Every bib record in our database has a QR code that is generated from the persistent
link to that resource. If the code goes to a database, it is proxied, and links the student
to the database on their device. Print resources will display the call number and status
of the item.
14. • QR codes are Quick Response codes that
immediately link a person to something.
• They are a 2 dimensional barcode that require a
barcode scanner or camera (an app loaded onto
a device) to read them
15. At Shawnee we offer access to two citation tools.
End Note Web
Noodle Bib
Citation tools help students organize and format
citations for research projects in an automated
way.
All of our resources offer some type of help with
citations. Either an export of the data or a
formatted citation that can be copied and
pasted.

Students can enter a question in the data well. The questions match on keyword, and possible responses drop down under the box. If the student sees their question, they can click and see the answer. If there is no match the question is submitted to the reference desk. If during open hours, it will be answered within minutes. If the library is closed, it will be picked up in the morning.
