The Truth About Concrete Paint
1.
2. Concrete paint is easy to apply and looks great, but
it has a short lifespan. For interior applications, you
can get 5-10 years out of a good paint, and for
exterior applications, 1-2 years. If and when water
or moisture becomes an issue, the paint will start to
bubble, flake, and peel. Some paints, like epoxies,
will trap the water beneath the surface, causing the
concrete to crack and spall before seeing any signs
on the surface. If you plan on using a concrete
paint, whether an acrylic, latex, or epoxy, it is
important to first seal your concrete with a
penetrating sealer.
3. As mentioned on the previous slide, here are issues
often masked by concrete paint:
Concrete Efflorescence
Water and Moisture
Mold
Cracks and spalls
When and how do you know you have an issue?
Not until the paint (acrylic, latex, epoxy, silane,
siloxane) starts to bubble, flake, or peel off.
4. Before painting concrete, you want to first apply a
penetrating concrete sealer. Why? Because Foundation Armor
sealers:
Chemically react with the concrete for form a permanent
crystalline barrier within the pores, guaranteed to prevent the
intrusion of water, moisture, and some vapors.
Help to increase the adhesion of paints by up to 20%.
Help to increase the life of a concrete paint by up to 2 years.
Strengthen, seal, and protect your concrete from the inside.
Foundation Armor sealers NEVER have to be reapplied. They
are a permanent solution to sealing and protecting concrete.
5. Clean the concrete slab. Make sure it is free of
paints, sealers, stains and other chemicals that
could prevent proper absorption into the
concrete.
Dilute and apply a Foundation Armor
penetrating sealer.
Apply the concrete paint or stain of your choice.
Let dry.
Learn more: concrete sealers.
6. FOUNDATION ARMORTM SEALERS STOP:
Water and vapor migration up to 100psi
Moisture vapor transmission up to .015 WVT
Alkali attack and efflorescence attack
FOUNDATION ARMORTM SEALERS REDUCE:
Transmission of hazardous gases, including
Radon
The absorption of chemicals, chlorides,
solvents, fats and oils
Internal chlorides by up to 50%-90%
FOUNDATION ARMORTM SEALERS PREVENT:
The growth of mold, mildew, bacteria,
lichen, and moss
Flaking, cracking, scaling and spalling
caused during freeze-thaw cycles
Surface deterioration and discoloration
FOUNDATION ARMORTM SEALERS INCREASE:
•Overall strength, hardness, and density by up to 45%
•Bond strength of epoxies, paints, and stains by up to
20%
FOUNDATION ARMORTM SEALERS:
NEVER peel, flake, or fade
NEVER stain from exposure to UV rays
NEVER leave behind a slippery surface coating
NEVER have to be re-applied or maintained
7. Water plus cement produces Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H) in a
process known as Hydration. C-S-H is the binding system for concrete.
Combined with the aggregate, C-S-H gives concrete its hardness and
strength.
A reactive byproduct of the Hydration process is Calcium Hydroxide.
When a Foundation Armor concrete sealer is applied to concrete, it
reacts with the existing Calcium Hydroxide to produce additional C-S-
H.This additional C-S-H is what provides the increased hardness and
densification by up to 45%, and water resistance up to 100 PSI.
FoundationArmor concrete sealers have the highest percentage of
reactive material, and are optimized to make the silicate available
more quickly for more rapid C-S-H formation.
