Ways of the world: a brief global history By Tara Cooper
Africa Left: Africa was the place in which human revolution occurred. Center: African environments: forests and deserts shaped how humans lived. Right: Technologies were improved. Weapons were made from bone and stones.
Human Growth & Expansion Left: Humans left Africa & traveled to Australia, Eurasia, & the Americas during the most difficult time, the last Ice Age. Right Below: Once the environments became warmer, humans began settling down into communities and their populations and technologies grew. After the last Ice Age a natural global warming occurred.
The Start of the Agricultural Revolution The Fertile Crescent was the first area to experience agriculture. It was rich with both plants and animals.
Domesticating Plants & Animals Left: Agriculture- deliberately cultivating certain plants & breeding certain animals Right: Grains Bottom Left: Domesticating animals
African Agriculture African Agriculture was mainly of animals & very little plants.
Agriculture in Mesoamerica The only large mammal in the western hemisphere of the Americas was the alpaca. Humans relied on hunting and gathering for most of their protein Left: The Americas lacked rich cereal grains and relied upon maize or corn called teosinte.
Inequality of Wealth & Power Left: Inequality of wealth & Power- Kings & Queens of Samaria, Egypt, China etc. where they had the most land, did not engage in labor, and had extravagant materials & resources. Right: Slaves were prisoners of war, debtors, & criminals in all countries. Some more than others. Slaves were sold, used for labors in fields, homes, mining, etc. and sometimes used as sacrifices.
Patriarchy Left: During the Horticulture society men & women were seen as equal individuals. Women too did gathering and labor ideal for their motherly roles. Women were seen as the giver of new life. Right: Animal plowing was a more intense farming than ancient gathering & therefore men did most of the work. The women mostly stayed at home taking care of the children, cooking, & taking care of the home.
Patriarchy continued… Right below: Women were actually the first slaves; prisoners of war, passed around from one man to the next, wives were exchanged between men. Above: Majority of militaries were men
Gender Equality in Egypt Upper Left: Egypt saw men & women more as equals Lower Left: Even though men & women were viewed more as equal, painting and sculpture show the people of Egypt still found it abnormal and gave some of the women manly features, such as the false beard. Above: Women in Egypt could have their own land & slaves, and could even hold their own political roles.
Modern Western Civilization Right Above: Current Food resources. Domesticating plants & animals. Grocery stores & pre-made fast food. Right Below: Men & Woman are viewed as equals. Women are in the military, men are also taking care of children, and women are also working to provide for the family. Left Above: Current man made as well as natural global warming is occurring. Different nationalities within America.
