Modern software development is a messy affair with complex problems, disconnected disciplines and immature practices. For the large financial services, software is a key enabler to delivering value to its customers, empowering employees and providing insights to management. The combination of increased complexity and value has led BlackRock to invest in the process of software delivery, and the application of the discipline ALM to the problem of disconnected delivery. Their desire, like many organizations is to provide better insights, improve collaboration and make the process of software delivery flow faster. In this talk Jonathan Major, Vice President of Quality at BlackRock, and Dave West, Chief Product Officer at Tasktop discuss the journey BlackRock has been on. Describing how BlackRock has adopted the ALM practice, connecting the disciplines of quality and development and how that has created increased traceability, visibility and reporting in a heterogeneous tool stack. They discuss the challenges in adopting an integrated approach to software, both technical and cultural and the steps necessary to take the ideas of ALM and implement them. The journey is by no means complete, but in this talk Jonathan and Dave will provide the audience with a description of their experience and a set of ideas for how an IT organization can adopt the ALM practice. This talk will cover. • The problems of delivering software in a heterogeneous world. • How the practice of ALM, the application of business management to the practice of software delivery can help. • What an integrated, end to end software delivery process looks like. • How BlackRock approached the problem. • A set of best practices for adopting the practice of ALM.
