7. What is a Templiner?
It is a revolutionary new way to protect temperature sensitive products that are
transported in standard dry ocean freight containers.
How does the Templiner work?
By placing a radiant barrier between your cargo and the ambient temperature outside the
container.
What is radiant barrier?
The name comes from the ability to be a barrier to the transfer of radiant heat. Radiant
barrier is made from materials that are very good at reflecting radiant heat and the ability
to reduce the emission of radiant heat.
What is radiant heat?
Radiant heat is heat that is radiated from a heat source through space (with or without
air). The heat you feel from a hot griddle on the stove is radiant heat. Most of the heat from
a bright light bulb is radiant heat. Radiant heat is also called infrared heat or infrared
energy.
8. What is infrared energy?
Infrared energy is electromagnetic energy that is not visible. It is next to red in the wavelength
spectrum. It travels at the speed of light. When infrared energy is traveling through air, molecules
in the air absorb a very small portion of the energy.
How does heat move?
Heat moves by conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction is the process that occurs in substances denser than air like water and wood and stone
where the heat moves through the substance. Conduction occurs rapidly in metals like gold and
copper and very slowly in an insulation like Styrofoam.
Convection is the process where air makes contact with substances that are conducting heat and
the air is heated. Hot air rises and this movement makes room for cooler air and the process
continues until the air and the surfaces are close to the same temperature
Radiation is the process of the infrared energy emitting from the heated substance through space.
The energy travels in a straight line at the speed of light until it is absorbed or reflected by another
substance. It is important to remember that in order for heat to move by radiation, there must be
space between the objects. The space can be as small as a few air molecules and still be effective. If
the objects are touching, then the heat moves by conduction, not by radiation.
9. Why is my cargo not affected by sudden changes in temperature?
Due to the reflectivity of the Templiner's radiant barrier.
What is reflectivity?
Reflectivity, for radiant barrier purposes, can be defined as a measure of how much of the
energy is reflected and not absorbed by the barrier. Very shiny aluminized plastic can reflect
98% of the radiant heat that strikes it.
What is absorbtivity?
Absorbtivity, for radiant barrier purposes, can be defined as a measure of how much of the
energy is not reflected and is absorbed by the material.
My cargo needs to be kept frozen, can I successfully use the Templiner?
In most cases, no. This is because the Templiner system is not designed to replace mechanical
cooling systems. Think of it as a big thermos. It keeps the goods placed in it at their original
temperature longer but it will not maintain heat or cold by itself. It prevents the sudden changes
in temperatures which cause the most damage in foods, juice, wine, resins, etc.
10. My problem is the cold temperatures during transport, can I use the Templiner?
Yes, because the Templiner has a low emissivity rating which means that the temperature inside the
Templiner is maintained longer even though the exterior is subject to freezing temperatures.
What is emissivity?
Emissivity, for radiant barrier purposes, can be defined as a measure of how much of the absorbed
energy is emitted by the barrier. Very shiny aluminized plastic has a very low emissivity rate - about
3%.
I have humidity problems during transport, can the Templiner help?
Yes. Because the barrier retains the heat within the cargo, the temperature inside the container
drops considerably less than the temperature outside the container. Thus, it is less likely that the
temperature inside the container will drop through the dew point, causing condensation and
subsequent moisture damage.
Is the radiant barrier protection complete?
Yes because the Templiner is the only alternative that protects all six sides of the container.
How is the Templiner installed/closed?
The Templiner is installed using a vacuum system that employs simple and portable equipment.
Once the loading is finished, the Templiner is folded and taped into place forming a seal that is easy
to open for customs verification. It also constitutes an important theft deterrent since it completely
covers the products inside and any tempering is evident, thus facilitating insurance claim
procedures.
11. How long does the installation take?
It takes an average of 10 minutes for a 20' container and 20 minutes for a 40' and can be done by one
person. Installing thermal blankets or Styrofoam insulation takes much longer and does not offer
complete protection.....we won't even mention the costs!
How much space does it take up?
None! Because it is a thin film which is completely adhered to the interior of the container, there is
practically no loss of payload. On the other hand, you could lose up to 43 cubic feet of valuable cargo
space with Styrofoam and no protection on the floor!
We use a forklift/pallet jack to load our containers, will this damage the Templiner?
In most cases all that is required is heavy gauge cardboard or plastic on the floor to protect from
wear and tear. Should there be a rip, it can be easily repaired with ordinary packaging tape.
How is the Templiner unloaded?
The seal is broken and the Templiner is rolled back to expose the cargo, which is unloaded as usual.
The used Templiner is easily disposed of like any other plastic packaging.
Can the Templiner be recycled?
Technically, yes, because all of the components can be re-used but since the elements cannot be
separated economically, the solution is to incinerate at temperatures in excess of 500° C. Because the
Templiner contains no PVC, there are no toxic emissions during combustion.
