NAMBLA is an organization formed in 1978 that believes consensual relationships between men and boys should be legalized. It cites ancient Greek pederasty as precedent but some members oppose this due to its elitism. In 1997, two NAMBLA members murdered 10-year old Jeffrey Curley. His parents sued NAMBLA but the case was dropped in 2008. Critics see NAMBLA as enabling child sexual abuse and several members have been convicted of crimes against children.

ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) assisted NAMBLA and stated that the suit violated their First Amendment rights to free speech. The lawsuit was dropped by the parents in April 2008 when the judge determined the key witness as being incompetent .
