Seeing is Believing! - Using Screencasting to Flip the Classroom Presented by Steve Hull and Tracey Duffy Jisc Digital Media With the increase in use of the concept of “Flipping the Classroom”, screencasting tools provide the opportunity to embed this pedagogy into teaching and learning. In addition, with the rise in ownership and use of mobile devices, the opportunities to engage with this type of technology is becoming far easier, with the number of apps available to educators. The use of screencasting is well established in many areas of educational practice, especially with software trainers for training purposes. Screencasting began as simple screen capture (the straightforward recording of on-screen activity). With the development of online technologies and services, simple screen capture is often augmented with multiple audio tracks, captioning and still images. Its ease of use, and ability to demonstrate on screen activity, with the viewer able to play, pause and reflect, makes screencasting an ideal tool for a variety of research, learning and teaching uses. However, there are considerations in designing, building and delivering material using these tools and the launch of Jisc Digital Media’s Screencasting Infokit aims to address many of these and to provide advice, guidance and best practice. This presentation will provide an introduction to the key areas covered in Jisc Digital Media’s infokit and will also showcase a range of apps available for using mobile devices as a screencasting tool.
