6. Captain William Hobson Hobson arrived in New Zealand on the 29 th Jan 1840. Hobson was the governor – his job was to get the Maori chiefs to sign a Treaty with British. A letter of invitation was sent out to Maori to meet with Hobson. PROBLEM: he did not have any examples of how to make a treaty!!! So he called on James Busby… Fill in your history road.
