serving over 22,000 youth and matching over
68,000 volunteers (called TechMission Corps)
Left AmeriCorps in 2013

10. Tips for Interviewing
Though TechMission interviews some
candidates, TechMission does not filter all
candidates other than performing a sex offender
background check
We post widely, so be street savvy in
interviewing
Assume that only about 40% of candidates or
less will be qualified
Review new candidates every 2-4 weeks.
Set up phone interviews.
If candidate is relocating, we recommend an in
person interview
11. Making an Offer
You can make an offer without informing us
Send and E-mail to
info@cityvisioninternships.org as soon as an
offer is accepted
Send a signed contract to
info@cityvisioninternships.org or fax to 816-256-
8471.
◦ You must have a signed contract with the intern by
their start date
◦ First payment is due on the intern’s start date
◦ That will cover their first term
12. When Can Someone Start?
Interns can start at any time
If they are a free undergrad tuition intern, then
they can take Freshman/Sophomore courses
starting anytime. Junior/Senior courses must
begin at the start of a term.
◦ See list at: http://www.cityvision.edu/cms/cv/courses
◦ If they start mid-term and take classes, then you pay
for the current term and the next term. If they start
mid-term and do not take classes then your first
payment applies to the next term.
13. Legal Category: Intern or Stipended Volunteer
In the contract with interns you must select whether the position is a
stipended volunteer or internship position
Stipended Volunteer if..
◦ It is typically the type of work a volunteer would do
◦ i.e. directly serving clients: youth ministry assistant, adult ministry
assistant
◦ Stipended Volunteer Advantages: less requirements on training
stipended volunteers
Internship if..
◦ It is a position that involves training that would help them prepare for a
career in that field
◦ i.e. indirect service: accounting, fundraising, tech support
◦ Internship Advantages: more flexibility on doing work that volunteers
might not do
If it could be either, then you can pick
14. Government Guidelines on Internships
The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities
of the employer, is similar to that which would be given at a
vocational school.
The training is for the benefit of the trainees or students.
The trainees or students do not displace regular employees, but
work under their close observation.
The employer that provides the training derives no immediate
advantage from the activities of the trainees or students; and on
occasion his operations may actually be impeded.
The trainees or students are not necessarily entitled to a job at the
conclusion of the training period.
The employer and the trainees or students understand that the
trainees or students are not entitled to wages for the time spent in
training.
15. Guidelines on Interns
Not required to pay interns minimum wage
Must still withhold FICA
Check with own accountants and state
authorities on tax guidelines, unemployment
insurance
Many states currently require health insurance
for 30 hours/week or more, and this will be the
national requirement starting in 2015.
16. Guidelines for Stipended Volunteers
Is the work they are doing really volunteer work? They
will consider
◦ Nature of the entity receiving the services (nonprofit, for instance)
◦ Services should be of the kind typically associated with volunteer work.
◦ Compensation of any sort (such as money, room & board, perks, etc.)
should be just to cover basic expenses (can pay through 1099)
◦ Should not displace regular employees
◦ Should not have expectations of benefits in the future
◦ Whether the activity is less than a full-time occupation
◦ Services are offered freely without pressure or coercion,
◦ Should not be involved in commercial or for fee activity (thrift store,
business, etc.)
◦ Typically should not involve supervision of other staff
