For large business that will deploy later, a PC refresh can actually help reduce operational costs while making the corporate user more productive….. 1. “Using Total Cost of Ownership to Determine Optimal PC Refresh Lifecycles,” Wipro Technologies, March 2009 (http://www.wipro.com/resource-center/wipro-council-for-industry-research/research-perspectives.htm). Based on a survey of 106 firms in North America and Europe representing 15 different industries and projections based on a Model Company developed by Wipro Technologies. The year 4 costs include both support costs as well as out of warranty repair costs. The values for both support and out of warranty repair costs were calculated by Wipro as an average of the costs reported by the 106 companies interviewed for the Wipro Technologies paper. Notebook year 1 (new PC) support costs = $716. Desktop year 1 (new PC) support costs = $433. Notebook year 4 support + out of warranty repair costs = $1136 + $348 = $1484 which is $768 higher than new PC ($768 = $1484 -$716). Desktop year 4 support + out of warranty repair costs = $688 + $120 = $808 which is $375 higher than new PC ($375 = $808 -$433).
Our $40 million dollar PC mistake. And now a key lesson for us. A key mistake that Intel IT made several years ago was in the choice of computers to buy . In an effort to further reduce PC TCO, we shifted our purchasing toward low-end PCs. The premise was that procuring lower-cost platforms for general use was the best economic decision. This was flawed logic. What made this worse was a change A change in strategy to provide Quicker availability of latest software. Intel IT decided that software and operating systems needed to be delivered to internal customers much more quickly than originally anticipated. IT developed a strategy called GA+90-general availability plus 90 days. This means delivering operating systems (OS) and office software on computers 90 days after they are available in the general marketplace. The low-end client systems that had been deployed were not capable of running upgraded operating systems and office software within their depreciation lifetime. As a result, Intel IT had to prematurely upgrade almost 20,000 clients around the company, at a cost of nearly $40 million in capital. ----------------------------------- Here ’ s an example of when we got it wrong. A key mistake that Intel IT made several years ago was in the choice of computers to buy. Historically, Intel IT ’ s standard PCs lagged the technology roadmap. The premise was that procuring lower-cost platforms for general use was the best economic decision. In 1996 and 1997, we discovered that we were actually shortening the useful life of our assets by not buying high enough. However, this strategy turned out to be shortsighted. An after-the-fact evaluation revealed the two factors that hurt the most: 1. A known constraint: Four-year depreciation cycle. The combination of the depreciation constraint and GA+90 strategy created a problem during 1996-97. Intel and MS working alone on platform security won’t be able to effectively combat the threats of tomorrow. Some of these components are here today. And adding things like TXT to bitlocker can add capabilities. Announcing: System Configuration Manager Service Pack 2 (Notes Below) Performance Working with Intel, Microsoft implemented a new feature called SMT parking which optimizes the Windows 7 scheduler for Intel Hyper-threading Technology enabling better performance on multi-core, and hyper-threaded, Intel processors. Power Management Microsoft and Intel worked together to ensure Windows 7 default power management policies are optimally configured when running on Intel’s Nehalem architecture CPUs resulting in increased battery life and performance when appropriate. Battery life ( Focus this as an Intel lead) Microsoft and Intel collaborated on investigating power usage in PCs. This resulted in modifications to Intel products and made changes in Windows 7 to enable PC OEMs to build more power efficient PCs. The result is longer battery life on most PC running Windows 7 than was possible with Windows Vista during common scenarios such as watching DVDs, browsing the Internet, using productivity applications and leaving the PC idle. Start/stop/sleep/resume speed ( Focus this on a Joint OEM better together messaging) Microsoft and Intel jointly analyzed the boot/shutdown/sleep/resume times on Intel platforms during the development of Windows 7 to identify opportunities for optimizing Intel’s BIOS and Microsoft’s OS. Responsiveness to commands Intel was the first to provide WDDM1.1 graphics drivers which allow Windows 7 to use significantly less system memory and provide faster and more responsive user experiences Graphics Intel was the first partner to provide Windows 7 graphics drivers with significantly reduced memory usage allowing Windows 7 to be developed with better performance and responsiveness “support full windows functionality with Intel graphics” Audio Power Savings With Intel’s development and standardization of power-saving audio hardware specifications, Windows 7 was able to take advantage of these new features to reduce the overall power consumption when playing audio. Caveat: Intel developed this specification, but I don’t think they’ve actually produced hardware yet. HDMI Audio With the development of a new hardware standard for HDMI audio, Windows 7 and Intel platforms provide consumers with support for high-definition, multi-channel audio over HDMI. Multimedia The continuation of a long collaboration with Intel has enabled us to provide a rich multimedia experience on Intel platforms. We have leveraged the latest processor architectures (both instruction set and threading/cores) in multimedia processing such as codec’s. The nature of these processes lends well to performance improvement from Intel’s multi-core architectures and their SSE instruction sets. Windows 7 leverages processor optimizations and hardware acceleration for H.264, VC-1, and MPEG2 video provided by Intel through the DirectX Video Acceleration architecture. Intel and Microsoft Work Together to Lower Cost of Deployment (announce SP2): With the arrival of Windows 7, Intel has been working with both the Windows division and key partners like System Center to deliver a quick and easy deployment solution. Intel and System Center have a strong heritage of joint engineering effort. For several years, development of Intel vPro technology has been developed in the Flagship System Center product, Configuration Manager 2007. In addition to adding platform support for Win7, a new feature in Config Manager Service Pack 2 expands Intel’s vPro integration to provide secure PC wake up over wireless networks, in addition to the wake over wired networks provided previously This integration has resulted in expanding our customers OS Deployment scenarios to now include Lights Out deployment automation, driving down costs, accelerating adoption and improving the end user experience of an Intel vPro powered Windows 7 experience
As a result of this early collaboration several features on Intel Core 2 processors and Windows 7 just work better together. One key area where IT is very concerned is application compatibility. Earlier this year, we announced plans with Citrix to productize a client-based hypervisor, WHICH would leverage some aspects of AMT and leverage TXT & VT to establish a trusted and secure foundation for the hypervisor to land...AND realized the benefits of a client hypervisor solution. The benefits include image delivery. Delivering the entire OS and apps bundled into a VM down to the client or a VM with the OS and stream the apps to the VM. This image delivery allows the virtualization between the layers of the compute stack that we mentioned earlier in the presentation. Off network mobility...There are TWO aspects to off network mobility. The first is what we all know is the ability to unplug your notebook and take your work with you. The second is the ability to be productive without the need to ALWAYS be connected to the network and alleviate network bandwidth tax of being CONSTANTLY connected. Low Data Center Build Out Costs...because the VM is delivered down to the client...expensive server farm build out is not needed...can add more here. Local compute and graphics performance...the ability to have near native performance for the responsiveness that the users need and require. Excellent security...as we have discussed previously...TXT and VT make vPro the virtualization platform of choice.

Intel IT collaborated closely with Microsoft to perform an early evaluation of Windows 7 that showed the OS meets the key requirements of Intel’s business groups, giving us the ability to improve employee productivity, deliver IT cost efficiencies, and improve manageability and security. Intel IT plans to begin enterprise-wide deployment of Microsoft Windows 7* on PCs with Intel® vPro™ technology in early 2010, so I guess you can put us in the fast adopter camp. We also determined that deploying Microsoft Windows 7 on new PCs with Intel vPro technology provides the best performance and manageability. Microsoft Windows 7 includes manageability and security capabilities that strongly complement Intel vPro technology, which we are using to improve PC management across the enterprise.
