Create Private Clouds with Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform
1. “ Create Private Clouds with Eucalyptus
Cloud Management Platform
”
Conference session by Sergey Sundukovskiy
Nowadays, developers all around the world face the challenge of creating new software
products utilizing the Cloud Computing paradigm. To choose the right one from the variety
of options offered, a Cloud Provider needs to be informed of the pros and cons of different
Cloud Management Platforms, such as RightScale, enStratus, Plesk, or Eucalyptus. This
session is going to discuss the opportunities and challenges of deploying the Eucalyptus
Cloud Management Platform in a typical Enterprise Environment.
SESSION DESCRIPTION
During this session, you will learn how to choose a Cloud Management Platform to suit
your Business and Technology needs. In particular, this session will go into detailed dis-
cussion of Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform benefits and challenges for different
types of businesses. The speaker will review the ability to create private clouds by means
of the Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform.
AGENDA
What is Eucalyptus? source infrastructure platform for implementing Private Clouds
Eucalyptus is an open
on Infrastructure-as-a-Service clusters. In the beginning of the session, the speaker
will outline the most important features of the Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform.
He will describe three major Eucalyptus packages: the cluster controller (which pro-
vides support for the virtual network overlay), the cloud controller (which includes the
front-end services and storage system), and the node controller (which interacts with
hypervisor to manage individual VMs).
Why Eucalyptus?
The speaker will describe the advantages of Eucalyptus from the perspective that it
enables you to create private clouds—with access to low-level system resources—and
to manage your security requirements without involving third-parties. You will find out
what makes it possible to move workloads between AWS and the data center without
modifying the code that implements them and how to use a variety of virtualization
technologies with the Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform. The speaker will de-
scribe why Eucalyptus’s open-source software components utilized without modifica-
tion provide robust results. First, because there were no changes to these packages, it
automatically incorporates any improvements or upgrades that the open-source com-
munity contributes. Secondly, by choosing open-source components that are common

to most freely available Linux distributions, Eucalyptus can run in pre-existing Linux in-
stallations without the addition or modification of the installed software infrastructure.
After describing these features, the speaker will focus on the support of Windows and
Linux guest OS in Eucalyptus, on virtualization technologies and hypervisor manage-
ment, on direct SAN integration (high-performance Storage Area Network), on user
and group management (it allows control access to the cloud by using comprehensive
user and group management), on accounting and quota management components (al-
lows you to define and allocate resource quotas for users and groups with Eucalyptus
EE’s quota management features).
Eucalyptus Recommended Use
In the course of the session, you will learn whether the Eucalyptus Cloud Management
Platform is the right solution for your particular Business and Technology Environment.
The speaker will focus on selecting the most appropriate combination of Cloud Vendor
and Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform coupled with suitable Cloud products. He
will cover how this infrastructure software enables enterprises and government agen-
cies to establish their own cloud computing environments. A number of real-world use
cases and scenarios will also be discussed.
Eucalyptus Challenges
At the end of the session, the speaker will focus on some of the challenges that were
encountered by other companies during the implementation of Cloud management
platforms. You will learn what it takes—once you have started installing a manage-
ment platform and creating a private cloud with it—to solve issues with little or no help
available. He will also discuss issues with targeting Linux systems using Xen.
Finally, you will be able to participate in a question-and-answer session, discussing the
challenges related to your specific Cloud Computing tasks.
