During this session, the speaker will compare the top storage solutions offered by Cloud
application providers, and focus on FathomDB—a database-as-a-service that automates
low-level DBA tasks for MySQL owners.
OUTLINE
 What is FathomDB?
Today, the majority of companies use a database as the driving force behind their
Web sites. FathomDB is a relational database-as-a-service, provided under the utili-
ty/service model. It administers a relational database in the Cloud for customers and
absorbs the responsibility of maintaining a database server. The speaker will start with
FathomDB’s overview and describe its main features.
 Why FathomDB?
You will learn how FathomDB leverages MySQL’s scaling capabilities across multiple
machines and how automated backup can make it a reliable Cloud storage. Since
standard MySQL is offered as an engine, you do not have to change your application
at all, and there is no lock-in or new API to learn. The speaker will also touch upon
FathomDB’s risk reduction, high quality level, and time-to-market improvement when it
comes to putting a database in the cloud with the ability to scale.
After that, the session will cover FathomDB’s performance analysis tools that facilitate
the high-level DBA tasks and make them easier. Among the tool’s other advantages,
the speaker will explain how FathomDB allows complex database operations to hap-
pen according to user-configurable maintenance schedules; further, that disk storage

Sergey Sundukovskiy has over 15 years of experience serving in capacities ranging from
Senior Architect to CIO, including experience in building IT organizations from the ground
up in both start-ups and Fortune 100 companies. Sergey specializes in intra-company and
offshore system and product development, Cloud Computing, project and resource man-
agement, cross-functional training and strategic planning. Sergey holds a B.A. in Comput-
er Science from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.S. in Information Tech-
nology from the University of Liverpool, as well a Ph.D. in Information Technology Man-
agement from the School of Business and Technology, Capella University.
