4. MÉTIS
Métis: Canada’s First Peoples descended
of marriages to Europeans, mainly French.
The Métis are one of three officially
recognized Aboriginal Peoples in Canada.

5. UR HISTORY
For thousands of years, Canada’s First Peoples wore
Mukluks and Moccasins as they thrived in harmony with
nature. As European settlers arrived, they also began to
adopt our traditional Native footwear as a necessary
tool for survival.
1630 The North American fur trade leads to the birth
of a new people – The Metis
1630-1870 The Metis establish their own identity,
with traits of both Native and European people.
1870 Metis leader Louis Riel presides over Manitoba
becoming a province of Canada.
1991 Métis siblings Sean and Heather McCormick
establish a trading post in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Native
artisans trade handmade mukluks and moccasins with
the McCormick’s for their tanned leather skins and furs.
1997 The McCormicks register a Canadian
corporation and begin manufacturing Native footwear.
2006 Hollywood stars are photographed wearing the
company’s products, creating demand from all corners
of the world.
2008 Manitobah Mukluks’ global brand office
established in Canada’s Capital Region.
International sales partnerships are created
to meet growing demand.
2009 Manitobah Mukluks partners with Vibram™
to develop a high-abrasion sole for the urban market.
Media worldwide feature the company’s products
alongside international fashion brands.

7. PRESERVING
TRADITIONAL ART
We believe traditional arts play a vital role
in helping Native communities achieve
self-sufficiency. To promote this, our Artisan
Program adds value to footwear that has
been in Native families for generations.
We call these StoryBoots.
From each family’s original, we make
a limited collection of StoryBoot and offer
them to a global audience. With each Story-
STORY
Boot sold, a family shares in the profits and
realizes economic benefits that would other-
BOOTS
wise not exist. It is our dream to help every
Native community benefit from the traditions
of their ancestors in this way.

8. OUR SOLE
When it came time to develop footwear for the city,
we challenged Vibram™, the world leader in high-
performance rubber soles, to design a sole that
could withstand the effects of cold and high-
abrasion urban environments (min 150NBS).
Vibram™ used 70 years of history and rugged TC1
compound to provide a durable, low-profile sole,
which allowed us to build quality and tradition
into every step.
8
9. “This sole tells a story of my people.”
ART OF OUR SOLE
Native artist Heather Steppler teamed with Vibram™
to create a sole that honours our tradition.
The Sky represents life-giving water falling
as rain and snow.
To the right are the western mountains.
Trees to the left of the tipi represent the
Woodland People.
The Vibram™ logo is the new doorway we walk
through together as modern hunter-gatherers.
The Fire tells us that First Peoples will always survive.
Behind it are prairie plains, home to the Great Horse
and Buffalo People.
The swirling Four Winds cleanse in a circular
motion, as the Sun circles our Mother Earth.

10. SHEEPSKIN
STEP INTO SOFTNESS.
Some footwear companies offer sheepskin
in-soles, others offer sheepskin trim.
At Manitobah, the entire footbed of
all our mukluks are wrapped in 100%
sheepskin. Slip into one of our sheepskin-lined
mukluks or moccasins and feel the difference
natural quality makes.
Warm in winter, cool in summer.
Breathes naturally.
Environmentally safe.

18. MÉTISBEADW RK
The Métis People wove floral art patterns into the lives of most tribes
on the Northern Plains. These designs became a defining cultural symbol
for us. For this reason, the Dakota Sioux and Cree called us the
“Flower Beadwork People.”
Métis women had always adorned tipis and clothing with geometric
beadwork, but the patterns changed when Roman Catholic missions
along the St. Lawrence River introduced the Métis to European folk art.
By the 1830s, vibrant floral designs were found on most of our products.
Floral beadwork reached unrivaled levels of artistry throughout the
Red River region during the mid-nineteenth century.
With great pride we offer mukluks and moccasins that reflect our unique
artistic heritage.

41. CARING FOR YOUR
MANITOBAH FOOTWEAR
Protection: Use only clear leather / suede protector.
Do not spray fur, as it contains natural protective oils.
To Clean: Leather can be cleaned using a gentle soap
and soft brush.
To Dry: Once wet, allow your footwear to dry naturally.
Wear: Never pull fur when putting on or removing boot.
Cross laces over before tightening to avoid tearing leather
eye holes.
HOW TO CUSTOM FIT YOUR CREPE SOLE
Crepe is a natural material that forms to the shape of
your foot. Over time, a crepe sole will feel a part of
you. To encourage the rubber to form faster, follow
these steps.
1. Heat soles with a blow-dryer until soft and flexible
(approx. 10 minutes).
2. Wear your mukluks as the crepe sole cools.

42. ARTIST
SUPPORT
Manitobah Mukluks promotes native
artists on our website with the goal
of ensuring that thousands-years-
old timeless traditions are not lost.
The Artists we feature have learned
their craft from the example of the
generations before them, who learned
theirs from the generations before
them. Through this program, we
hope to share our success with these
important artists while preserving
this native form of traditional expres-
sion. Help us keep this tradition alive
by experiencing this art work in
your home and office. We will help
make these works available to you
