Social Determinants Tour of Ward 5-6 Washington, DC, August 10, 2012, 10:30 AM
Ted Eytan, MD
Pierre Vigilance, MD
Purpose
To see, first hand, the community conditions in our city that lend to sub-optimal health.
We would like to observe the environment, including health, health care, crime, food,
and transportation.
How this came about
I have been writing about social determinants of health, with multiple blog posts, and
then this blog post:
“Quantified Community: Visualizing the health and illness of Washington, DC through
open data and art” - http://www.tedeytan.com/2012/05/05/10643
Prompted a discussion with Kait to go see first hand.
Plan
• We are meeting at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health, 700 2nd Street, NE
• Walk the neighborhood
• As the environment allows
• walk to stores in the “Healthy Corners” program
• walk to nearby health care facilities
• observe transportation capabilities
• I have us scheduled for 60 minutes
• I will be taking photographs throughout
I am attaching maps and other data that will be useful to us.
