ABAKAS E C T I O N F R A N Ç A I S E
LUNDI 9 SEPTEMBRE 2013
Editorial écrit en anglais par
Edmond Y. Azadian et
publié dans The Armenian
Mirror-Spectator en date
du 15 août 2013
Le célèbre poète national armé-
nien, Vahan Tékéyan, a écrit une
série de poèmes qui décrivent
d’une manière efficace et concise
les malheurs qui se sont abattus
sur le peuple arménien tout au
long de son histoire. L’un de ses
poème s’intitule « Une nation en
poussière » et commence par :
« Toi petite, terre réduite, plus
fine qu’un grain de poussière. »
Cette courte déclaration pleure
la situation du peuple arménien et
sa patrie, réduite en poussière,
conséquence du crime perpétré par
les Turcs ottomans.
Le poète, la plupart du temps
pessimiste, conclut cette fois son
poème avec optimisme, en écrivant
: « Des grains de poussière qui
pourraient, un jour, redevenir une
fois de plus pierre. »
Les Turcs ont décidé d’anéantir
le peuple arménien de sorte qu’il
ne puisse plus revendiquer sa
patrie ancestrale.
Nonobstant la conclusion opti-
miste de Tékéyan, les Arméniens
restent une « nation en poussière »
en raison des luttes et querelles
intestines autodestructrices. Le
but des Turcs est de nous réduire
en poussière et nous prolongeons
ce statut de notre propre chef.
Nous sommes à l’aube du cente-
naire du génocide et mis à part
quelques discours et plans
grandioses, nous, en tant que
nation, poursuivons l’auto-flagella-
tion, tandis que la Turquie a déjà
pris des contremesures afin
d’affaiblir tout effort des
Arméniens d’accéder au monde.
Les Turcs ont déjà leurs plans
stratégiques en place, car ils se
rendent compte de la menace à
leur sécurité nationale que cette
« nation en poussière » peut
engendrer.
Le ministre des Affaires
étrangères, Ahmet Davutoglu, a
annoncé des plans pour commé-
morer en 2015 le centenaire de la
campagne de Gallipoli, où les
forces turques, sous la direction de
Mustapha Kemal, ont défait les
troupes alliées dans le détroit des
Dardanelles.
relations américano-turques. Ce
n’est pas une coïncidence si la
Turquie a nommé Hulyusi Akar
commandant des forces terrestres.
Il se trouve que M. Akar est l’un
des « experts » de la Turquie sur
la question arménienne. En fait,
sa thèse de doctorat à l’Univer-
sité Bogazici d’Istanbul était intit-
ulée, « la question arménienne
et l’impact du lobby arménien
sur les relations américano-
turques. »
Alors que la Turquie investit des
ressources considérables en
argent, puissance militaire et influ-
ence politique, que font les
Arméniens pour contrer la
menace ?
Nous pouvons énumérer quel-
ques actes méprisables et désap-
prouver notre statut de nation
réduite en poussière.
Récemment, l’un des thèmes
prévus lors d’une réunion du
Conseil spirituel suprême à
Etchmiadzine était la planification
des programmes du centenaire.
Mais personne ne s’intéressait au
sujet.
Au lieu de cela, une campagne
abjecte a été déclenchée afin de
dénigrer la hiérarchie de l’Eglise
comme pour saboter les questions
les plus pressantes.
En effet, la coïncidence peut
laisser croire à la théorie du com-
plot. A ce jour, peu importe les
mérites ou démérites des questions
posées, le moment était certaine-
ment regrettable.
Une autre question est la situa-
tion captivante créée par les cabi-
nets d’avocats qui recherchent une
compensation pour les survivants
des victimes du génocide
arménien par les compagnies
d’assurance.
Un communiqué publié le
24 juillet 2013 annonçait que
« Yeghiayan, Kabatek et Geragos
avaient réglé à l’amiable leurs
différends. »
Il est important de citer une déc-
laration sérieuse du communiqué
de presse : « Les cabinets d’avo-
cats de Vartkes Yeghiayan, la firme
de Katabeck Kellner et le cabinet
de Geragos et Geragos annoncent
conjointement qu’ils ont réglé à
l’amiable leurs différentes quant au
règlement du litige sur le génocide
arménien contre AXA devant la
Cour fédérale. »

n’importe quel prix » a dit Artsrun Hovannisian.

occupation russe pendant 40 ans.
mes origines. Je ne prendrai pas un
autre prénom et je ne changerai rien.
Lorsque je marquerai des buts, ils se
souviendront tous de mon nom ! » a
déclaré Henrikh Mkhitarian dans
une entrevue au journal russe
« Sovetski Sport ».

déposée par Geragos et Kabatek
Brown Kellner (cas no. 2:11-cv-
03043-CAS-AGA) contre M. Yeghia-
yan, Rita Mahdessian et un certain
nombre d’organismes de bienfais-
nce a été rejetée avec préjudice
toutes affaires cessantes. »
La morale se trouve plus loin
dans le communiqué : « Les avo-
cats qui ont déposé les plaintes
sont conscients que le cas d’AXA
représente une maigre compensa-
tion pour l’insondable injustice
commise envers le peuple
arménien. Ils savent que s’ils ne
peuvent défaire les pages sombres
de l’histoire arménienne, ils
doivent continuer à lutter au nom
de la justice. » M. Yeghiayan a
également ajouté : « Nous ne
devons pas perdre de vue notre
principal objectif - une mesure de
justice pour les héritiers des vic-
times. »
Turcs.
Cette affaire symbolise aussi
notre vulnérabilité, au cas où les
Turcs décideraient de discuter
d’une quelconque compensation.
Les Turcs savent déjà que tout ce
qu’il faut pour créer le chaos
parmi les Arméniens est de lancer
un ballon d’essai.
Une autre question de principe
vient de bouleverser notre commu-
nauté d’érudits; une conférence
avait lieu à Tbilissi, en Géorgie,
avec pour sujet le génocide
arménien. Bon nombre d’organisa-
teurs et de participants étaient des
négationnistes du génocide. La
FRA par l’entremise de ses médias
a demandé aux Arméniens de ne
pas y assister et nombreux sont
ceux qui en ont tenu compte. Il
s’agissait de ne pas légitimer les
négationnistes du génocide, ce qui
est un argument valable.
Cependant le professeur Gérard
Libaridian a accepté d’y participer.
professeur Libaridian.
Depuis de nombreuses années,
les spécialistes arméniens partici-
pant à ce type de réunions sont
peu préparés ou laissent la porte
ouverte aux experts turcs et leurs
mercenaires. Certains universi-
taires ont soutenu qu’ils n’étaient
pas des spécialistes du génocide,
d’autres croyaient que faire face
aux négationnistes du génocide les
placerait en position de défense,
ce qui grugerait leurs diplômes.
Dans sa longue réplique, le pro-
fesseur Libaridian soutient que
nous devrions répondre aux
attaques du lion dans sa tanière.
Il semble que son raisonnement
détaillé n’ait pas réussi à convain-
cre ses adversaires qui ont produit
une autre version, cette fois-ci
abandonnant les subtilités du dis-
cours académique.
Si nous devons faire face aux
négationnistes, nos experts
doivent être aussi bien préparés
que leurs adversaires, sinon, nous
tomberions dans le piège d’un
exercice chimérique.
Mais ce que nous apprenons de
ce débat est que les médias FRA
ont réglé de vieux comptes avec le
professeur Libaridian, qui est un
ex-membre de la FRA. Comme
conseiller principal du président
Lévon Ter-Petrossian, il est perçu
comme l’architecte de la soi-disant
politique « pro-turque » du prési-
dent. Tous ces ressentiments accu-
mulés au fil des ans sont ressortis
sous le couvert d’un débat
académique.
La FRA estime en outre disposer
d’un monopole sur la question
arménienne et les questions de
génocide. Nous avons besoin d’une
discussion dans notre commu-

Former Member of the Canadian
Parliament and CIC judge Sarkis
Assadourian has sent a letter to the
Stamp Advisory Committee of Canada
Post Corporation asking to issue a
commemorative stamp dedicated to
the Georgetown Boys. A detailed
explanation is offered in the letter
about these young orphans of the
Armenian Genocide who were accept-
ed by Canada and settled in farms
around Georgetown, Ontario and
worked hard; some even volunteered
to fight as part of the Canadian Forces
during WWII. “They were Canadian
heroes” says Sarkis Assadourian.
Recently, a special plaque was
placed, dedicated to their memory by
the Town Council of Georgetown. “I
am confident that, this stamp will be
sold as widely as the stamp series ded-
icated to the 1700th Anniversary of

BY EDMOND Y. AZADIAN
Ever since Armenia’s indepen-
dence, Turkey and Azerbaijan have
been engaged in a war of attrition
against Armenia by blockading the lat-
ter and by forcing upon it an arms
race. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham
Aliyev only recently remarked cynical-
ly that Armenia’s population was
dwindling rapidly and pretty soon the
country would be ripe for takeover.
Following Azerbaijan’s disastrous
defeat in 1994, the Baku government
seemed willing to settle the conflict
with the return of seven Azeri regions
around Karabagh, kept under
Armenian military control for security
reasons. As Azerbaijan’s petrodollars
began flooding the country, the gov-
ernment’s arrogance rose commensu-
rately and the Baku leadership began
demanding the return of the entire ter-
ritory of Nagorno Karabagh itself.
Adding insult to injury, President
Aliyev’s ambitions reached a new high
by demanding the entire territory of
Armenia as “historic Azeri” land.
Azerbaijan’s arrogance is fed by the
indifference — or, rather the encour-
agement — of the international com-
munity. All ceasefire violations by the
Azeri forces are routinely ignored by
the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) repre-
sentatives, who, during their seasonal
visits to the region do nothing but spin
their wheels. Their respective govern-
ments — France, the US and Russia —
issue annual declarations insisting that
the status quo is no longer tolerable,
but the status quo continues to remain
exactly that, year after year, because
those declarations are not backed by
any meaningful actions. This all means
that Azerbaijan uses its petrodollars to
buy sophisticated armaments and
political influence, shielding its
authoritarian rule from any outside
criticism.
Recently 317 delegates from 42 US
states went on a junket bankrolled by
the Baku government. The delegation
included 11 sitting members of
Congress and 75 state representatives.
An article by Larry Luxner in the
Washington Advocate, describing the
trip, stated: “Plouffe, Messina and
Gibbs were all called out in a
Washington Post story that was pub-
lished at the height of our trip. The
article, ‘For Obama’s Ex-aides, It’s
Time to Cash in on Experience,’ said
all three were given five-figure checks
to speak at the forum as part of
Azerbaijan’s charm offensive to woo
Americans.”
After such large-scale and blatant
bribing, is there any other explanation
as to why the Obama administration
continues to grant dispensation of the
Freedom Support Act whose Section
907 refers to penalties on Azerbaijani
misbehavior?
Azerbaijan is on a media offensive
to portray Armenia as aggressor by
forcing or begging countries to blame
Armenia as a “perpetrator of
Genocide” in Khojaly. The last victim
of that propaganda was the largest
Moslem country of Indonesia, whose
recent past is tainted with the murder
of 500,000 ethnic Chinese and crimes
against the people of East Timor.
Azerbaijan, pushing the envelope
further, was recently engaged in war
games with Turkish armed forces
using the Azeri mainland and the
exclave of Nakhichevan. According to
the Turkish daily Milliyet, that was
Ankara’s tacit response to Aghvan
Hovsepian, Armenia’s prosecutor gen-
eral who recently made a reference,
during a conference of jurists, about
Armenia’s territorial claims from
Turkey.
On the heels of all these develop-
ments Azerbaijan’s defense minister
contributed his share of tension, reit-
erating Aliyev’s claims: “Azerbaijan
has no other way but to liberate the
occupied territory by strengthening its
army,” said Safar Abiyev during the
visit of a Korean parliamentary delega-
tion to Baku on July 12.
Against all these odds, Armenians
were lulled to believe that they enjoy
some security thanks to a strategic
alliance with Moscow. But that guar-
antee proved hollow as Moscow began
arming Azerbaijan. Moscow’s actions
will do nothing except to escalate the
tension in an already-volatile region.
Should war break out, it will be an
existential conflict for Armenia.
In view of the growing dangers, one
would think that Armenians them-
selves should sober up and raise the
level of their defenses. But unfortu-
nately, over there people are engaged
in self-flagellation, concocting scan-
dals and sapping the vitality of the
nation. Electronic media in Armenia,
employing locals, is mostly financed
by self-serving outside sources who
can only add more fuel to the existing
tinder. Some people are alarmed but
the majority is indifferent. The danger-
ous trend of depopulation continues
and everybody blames someone else,
but that does not add a single number
to the statistics nor does it tackle ways
to keep the population at home and
happy, i.e. jobs, housing, rule of law,
etc.
It looks like Armenians are infected

Armenian, Russian troops
hold joint drills
YEREVAN (RFE/RL) — Hundreds of Armenian and Russian soldiers held a
week-long military exercises in central Armenia that are aimed at testing and
boosting their interoperability.
In a statement, the press office of Russia’s Southern Military District said the
“tactical” exercises, which began on last Monday, involved two battalions from
the Russian military base in Armenia and the Armenian army’s special
Peacekeeping Brigade. The latter contributes troops to ongoing NATO-led mis-
sions in Afghanistan and Kosovo.
“During a simulation of hostilities, the servicemen repelled attacks, went on
the offensive and destroyed the retreating detachments as well as a detected
sabotage-reconnaissance squad of the imaginary enemy,” said the statement.
The participating troops are backed up by tanks, helicopters and various
artillery systems.
According to the statement, the purpose of the war games that took place
near Mount Aragats was to “improve coordination of command centers in com-
bat operations.”
Russia and Armenia practice joint military operations on a regular basis in
line with their close military ties. Soldiers from the two nations also train togeth-
er within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO),
a Russian-led military alliance of six former Soviet republics. Armenia hosted
CSTO exercises in September last year.
Flour, sugar prices decrease
in Armenia
YEREVAN (Armenpress) — The recent results of the Armenian moni-
toring State Commission for Economic Protection recorded a decrease in
both flour and sugar prices.
“Sugar prices decreased by 10-20 AMD according to monitoring held in
five major supermarkets,” said Gayane Sahakyan, press secretary for the
commission, adding that f lour price decreased by 15 AMD.
The increase of gas and electricity prices in Armenia led to price increas-
es for various goods such as bread, beer, mineral water and etc.

TEL AVIV — Israel’s former for-
eign minister Avigdor Liberman told
the Jerusalem Post on Wednesday that
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan’s hateful and incitement filled
words against Israel is reminiscent of
Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.
Liberman, who currently heads the
Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense
Committee, spurned the restraint
demonstrated by the Prime Minister’s
Office and the Foreign Ministry toward
Erdogan’s charge Tuesday that Israel
was behind the downfall of deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi.
“Everyone who heard Erdogan’s words full of hate and incitement under-
stands without a doubt that we are talking about the successor to Goebbels” the
Dreyfus trial, and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, he said as reported by
JPost.
Liberman, who opposed any type of apology to Turkey over the 2010 Mavi
Marmara affair, said that those who “attacked” him and his party for that posi-
tion should “draw the conclusions and do some soul searching.”
Erdogan, speaking at a meeting of his AK Party in Ankara on Tuesday
referred to the developments in Egypt and said, “Who is behind [Morsi’s ouster]?
There is Israel. We have [a] document in our hands.”
The document, it emerged, was a video of a discussion held at Tel Aviv
University on the Arab Spring in June 2011. Lévy, during the symposium, said, “If
the Muslim Brotherhood arrives in Egypt, I will not say democracy wants it. Of
course not. Democracy, again, is not only elections, it is also values.”

with the rare disease of self-destruc-
tion.
Historic precedents do not inspire
much hope, since in the middle of the
11th century Armenians voluntarily
surrendered the bustling metropolis of
Ani to Byzantium. In 1375, they were
so engaged in court intrigues and
internecine quarrels that the Cilician
Kingdom fell easily to the Mamluks
and in 1920 the infighting was so
intense and senseless that the inde-
pendent republic was taken over by
the Soviets.
But then again, one thing we are
good at, is creating heart-wrenching
songs about freedom and indepen-
dence and singing them nostalgically
for six centuries.
Is it time to be sarcastic or to sober
up to face the impending war?
Azerbaijan plans $3 Billion arms
purchase from S. Korea
BAKU (APA) — Azerbaijan
intends to purchase a slew of
weaponry from South Korea,
according to a source in the South
Korean parliament, Hankook Ilbo
publications reports.
According to the source, the
intention to purchase modern mil-
itary weaponry was expressed
during the visit of a South Korean
parliamentary delegation to
Azerbaijan. The Azeri leadership
has expressed its wish to pur-
chase submarine boats, mine ves-
sels, transport ships, T-50 training
planes, K-9 self-propelled artillery
vehicles, and drones worth $3 billion from South Korea.
These proposals have been submitted to the government of South Korea, but
the Korean side has not yet given consent to the deal. Meanwhile, Azerbaijani
Defense Minister Safar Abiyev announced that his government will have to use
military force against Armenia if negotiations don’t progress. “If this situation
continues, we will face the necessity to use the capabilities of our military,”

ISTANBUL (The Armenian
Weekly) — An 80-year –old
Armenian woman was the victim of a
recent assault in Istanbul’s Ferikoy
neighborhood on Aug. 17, reported
Agos.
The victim was Markırıt Cam-
kosoglu, who lived alone. The assault
happened in her apartment on Savash
Street.
Camkosoglu recounted the follow-
ing to Agos: rst, I was not suspicious.
The man was of medium height, and
was dark and ugly. I thought he was
one of the neighbors and was going
upstairs. The building I live in is mas-
sive, and so it is impossible to recog-
nize everyone. However, as soon as I
opened my apartment door, the man
attacked me. I fell on the floor, and as
I lay there, he started hitting me in the
head. I believe he attempted to murder
me. I don’t know his voice—he did
not say a single word to me to hide his
identity. After beating me, he stole my
purse, which was on the table and
which contained only 70 Turkish liras.
Then, he ran away.”
Camkoso_lu added that she had
been living in her apartment for 50
years, and this was the first time that
such an incident had taken place.
During the investigation, the neigh-
bors stated that the attacker must
have been familiar with the entrance
to the building. Moreover, he knew
that Camkoso_lu lived by herself. For
these reasons, he had chosen to attack
at a time the building was calmest in
terms of foot traffic.
This incident is reminiscent of earli-
er attacks on old Armenian women
that took place in the Samatia district
of Istanbul between December 2012
and January 2013. One of these earlier
assaults led to the death of Maritsa
Küçük.
Police apprehended a suspect,
Murat Nazaryan in March 2012. His
trial is ongoing, although Nazaryan
claims he has no memory of assaulting
the women, and that his initial confes-
sion was extracted under psychologi-
cal duress. The lawyers representing
Maritsa Küçük's family have demand-
ed the court to launch a broader inves-
tigation into the issue.

AGBU’S MUSICAL ARMENIA PROGRAM
LAUNCHES YOUNG ARTISTS’ CAREERS
In just one year, the AGBU Musical
Armenia Program (MAP), which was
launched last summer to connect tal-
ented young artists with their cultural
heritage, has given participants even
more: career opportunities. With
MAP’s support, Shaghig Amy
Kazandjian, a recent college graduate
from Canada and a French horn play-
er, has landed a spot in the Yerevan
State Opera and Ballet orchestra. The
contract will keep Kazandjian in
Yerevan through the upcoming fall
season, where she’s building on the
weeks of intensive training that all
MAP participants enjoyed.
During the program, which ran
from July 15 to August 4, 20135 per-
cussionist and composer Andrea
Godoshian, who hails from Michigan,
played alongside celebrated jazz musi-
cian Armen “Chico” Tutunjian and his
band in a live show-and each of MAP’s
seven participants have their sights set
on performing in the 2014 Renaissance
International Music Festival in Gyumri
after receiving a personal invitation
from the festival’s director, pianist
Karine Avdalyan.
Several world-famous performers
taught back-to-back MAP seminars,
including mezzo-soprano Anna
Mayilyan and music historians Gagik
Ginosyan, Mher Navoyan, Araxy
Saryan, and Arthur Shakhnazaryan.
Each offered instrumental and vocal
lessons in addition to lectures, which
spanned genres and years, such as
those on 19th century Armenian classi-
cal music, Armenian jazz and folk
music, medieval spiritual music, and
18th century Armenian minstrel music.
For the MAP artists, who call
Bulgaria, Canada, and the United
States home, it was an experience they
could only find in Armenia.
When the MAP participants weren’t
training with professionals, they were
collaborating with some of Armenia’s
youngest artists. MAP brought the stu-
dents to the house-museums of cultur-
al icons Aram Khachaturian, Sergei
Paradjanov, Alexander Spendiarian,
and Hovhannes Tumanyan for an inti-
mate look at their lives and work. At
Yerevan’s Charentz Museum they had
the opportunity to see firsthand the
manuscripts and instruments owned
by Armenia’s earliest musicians,
including Sayat Nova and Jivani.
At the final MAP gala concert on
Sunday, August 4, in the salon of
Khachaturian’s house-museum, the
participants showcased their own
work; the entire MAP ensemble,
together with their instructors, per-
formed an original piece composed by
student Andrea Godoshian especially
for the event.
The final gala concert marked the
end of a summer of learning and creat-
ing. But for the students, it was only
the beginning.
