Do You Need a Security Service
According to an official press release authored by the Bureau of Justice Statistics and released on June 20,
2013, the average financial loss in 2011 from burglarized homes in the United States of America was a
staggering $2,120. The median loss was $600, up from $389 in 1994 (after inflation adjustments). Nearly
3.4 million homes were burglarized in 2011, equating to a shocking total of 27.6 completed thefts per one
thousand U.S. households. With more than one of every forty households being burglarized yearly, is it time
for you to employ a security service to protect your precious belongings?
The press release referred to above provided some other interesting statistics. For example, of all the
completed burglaries in 2011, 34% involved the loss of an electronic device (i.e., television, DVD player,
iPad, laptop, GPS, etc.). An even larger percentage of the thefts involved personal items, such as jewelry,
watches, furs, etc. Even clothes and luggage were popular targets. Evidently, much of what you own may be
a prime target for burglars!
How can a help protect your belongings from burglary theft? The answer depends on the type of service you
decide to implement. Most such services are enabled with a network of intruder detection sensors that either
are monitored 24/7 by a security company or automatically send an intrusion alarm to a contracted
emergency center so that a law enforcement representative can be dispatched. The sensors can be hard
wired or wireless. Wireless sensors provide greater flexibility, allowing individual sensors to be moved from
room to room or house to house. If you enjoy having a pet inside your home, you will want to make sure that
your intruder detection sensors do not send an alarm when your pet enters a room. A system control panel is
provided to activate or deactivate the network of intruder detection sensors. Depending on the sophistication
of the system, you may or may not be able to activate sensors on a room by room basis; doing so will
provide greater granularity of security capabilities. When leaving the house completely empty, activating the
entire sensor network may be easily done with a single button push. Deactivating the sensors when a
member of the family returns home may be equally simple. Some security systems offer multiple levels of
intrusion detection, starting with entry sensors that detect the opening of doors or windows, followed by a
second line of defense that incorporates motion detection sensors which react to motion inside a room. A
third level of protection allows you to push a panic switch in case you are in immediate danger; this will
result in an elevated law enforcement dispatch. A fourth security level provides a means for you to send an
alarm (unknowingly to a burglar) if you are forced to disarm your security system. Finally, if sensor
monitoring and/or alarm transmissions are enabled with cellular technology, the requirement for an internet
connection and service can be eliminated, thus reducing complexity and ongoing cost while maximizing
system uptime.
While implementing a involves a monthly cost, you can minimize that cost by shopping services to find the
best value, tweaking your security system and corresponding monitoring services to eliminate unneeded
capabilities, and making certain that your home insurance company provides you with a premium discount
for implementing the system. Most importantly, you will undoubtedly sleep better at night knowing that your
precious belongings (and your family) are now being protected with a proven, effective security solution.
