Only by knowing the power of the
planets in an individual’s horoscope,
one can get a clear conclusion about the
individual. The Atharva Veda gives great
ideas about the planets and stars even long
back before the telescopes were invented.
The Astronomy tells about various stars
and constellation of stars. But the Vedic
Astrology speaks about twenty seven stars
and the nature of the persons born in that
particular star. This is only a guidline. The
nature will vary according to the planets’
position I the horoscope. Anyone, those
who wish to know more and more about
the planets’ position in their horoscope
and to solve the problems in the spiritual
way as per the norms of Atharva Veda can

In the past issue I explained about nine
stars. In this issue, I wish to write about
another set of nine stars. I am going to
write about the stars and the nature of the
persons born in that particular star.
Magha Nakshatra:
Spread from 0 degree to 13:20’ Simmam.
Lord Sun is the lord of this star and the
deity ‘Pitrigan’. Symbol-The royal Court
with a royal throne.Attributes-The virtues
and vices of the father’s family, wealth,
glory, beauty, strength and prowess,
luster and effulgence, superior qualities,
sharpness of intellect, nobility, prestige,
replenishment, and increase, wisdom,
brilliance, capacity and willingness to
donate, ancestors on the paternal side-all
these are effected by Magha. In no star is
the position of Lord Sun is so magnificent
and dignified. Lord Sun in “Ashwini” is
brilliant no doubt but the brilliancy of
incendiary character. It burns everything
about it. Lord Sun is then a terrible ball
of fire. But in Magha, Lord Sun is like an
emperor, confident and self-assured. If
happy and pleased he is in a mood to make
any benediction or gift. When Lord Sun is
in Magha, Lord Sani gets alarmed and that
is natural. For Sani is by character, of a
mean disposition, the nature of a slave, no
wonder that mean and lowly Sani cannot
brook the beauty and the dignity of the
position of Lord Sun in Magha. That is
why Sani is “Neecha” and anti-meridian
in Ashwini and meanness and wiliness of
Sani increases. If Sani is the lord of 9th
and 10th houses and is placed in the 4th
house and associated
with Magha he adversely influences
the effects of the 4th and 10th houses.
Magha is the cause of brightness and
light. Therefore gloomy Grahas cannot
stand it. Magha stands for noble impulses
and incentives, the gift of Magha must
always be a noble one. Magha has been
described as glorious one. Those born in
the star Makha are reserved, highly sexy,
endowed with comforts and have wives
who are also reserved. Knowledgeable,
pure and sacrifice things. Those born in
the Makha star are cruel, respect their
fathers, sharp in reacting with others,
non-sinners and destroy their enemies.
They are harsh-spoken, hefty bodied,
angry, transact with teachers and kings,
interested in the advice of Devaguru and
are bright. They tread the religious path
and endowed with pleasant qualities;
enjoyers and truthful. They are served by
many servants, conduct big operations
and are leaders of a big army. They are
learned, long-lived, earn good money,
obedient and help their relatives. They
have bloodshot eye and possess fish sign
on the chest. Those born in the first pada
like to be alone, suffer from ear diseases,
talk much, cruel, deceivers, hate others;
and always sick.
Poorvapalguni Nakshatra:
Spread from 13:20’ to 26:40’ Simmam.
Lord is Lord Sun, deity “Shivalinga”,
Symbol-Swinging hammock. It is also
called the Bhagadaivata Star. All the six
majesties, pleasure and prosperity, love,

enjoyment and sensual delight are caused by this Nakshatra. The
origin of creation, it announces creation and development. The
closure of it means destruction. The individual who in personal
life succeeds in mastering the six impulses, that is the impulse of
creativity which also masters death. Therefore, on the one hand
this star symbolizes the joy of creation and enjoyment, and on
the other hand signifies desirelessness and asceticism. On the
one hand it is the gateway to creation, basic seed of it; on the
other hand it aims at renunciation, dissolution, and a merger in
‘Brahma’. Fame and renown is the special feature of this star.
Poorvapalguni and Uttarapalguni are symbol of good fortune
and luck. It is the birth star of Guru. Those born in this star are
experts in love making, strong and handsome but extremely
fearful. They help others, and carry out works which cannot be
done by others. They are angry, frauds, cruel and candid. They
are bright, wealthy, givers, and experts in music and dance. They
are wise and are in the service of kings. They are long lived
and beget few children. They are learned, reserved, love women,
enjoyers, prominent amongst the learned, handsome, love their
brothers, endowed with soft hands and feet, born of Rajamsha,
strict transactors, endowed with attractive eyes, idle and possess
kingly signs. Those born in the first pada are endowed with all
good qualities, enjoy life, endowed with many children, kind
hearted, capable of doing varied jobs, satisfied, trouble others,
not trusted, cruel, soft-spoken and loved by people.
Spread from 26:40 Simmam to 10: degree Kanya. The lords
are Lord Sun and Lord Mercury (Budha), symbol is a bed.
Poorvapalguni and Uttarapalguni are pair together. Its attributes
are much the same as those of Poorvapalguni. The only difference
is that generosity, kindness, patronage and an eagerness to help
the distressed, to help friends and intimates and those who seek
help are more pronounced in this star. Those born in the Uttaram
star are wealthy, know the science of weapons, impotent,
respectful and endowed with attractive eyes. They are fixed to
the sciences and stingy in expending money. They are givers,
kind hearted, happy and endowed with good qualities, famous,
kingly, daring and extremely soft personalities. They win over
their enemies, loved by women, experts in arts, truthful, and
learned. They are obedient, religious, loved by people, stable
and bright. Those born in the first pada cause danger to their
father, hence the child is forbidden to be seen by their father
until the end of two months after the birth. They are devoted
to work, proud, knower of secrets, handsome and the most
important person in their clan. They easily mesmerize women,
of hot constitution, obedient, happy, learned and possess signs
of fish.
Hasta Nakshatra:

Sahasramsu and (12) Surya. All the attributes of these names
etymologically connotes are caused by this star. From the Surya
we derive creativity and creation, and from creation we derive
light, luster, and strength. Surya is the prime cause of dominion,
kingship, power of immunity and the light that dispels darkness.
Budha is the cause of knowledge. If placed in this star he sheds
light all around. Lord Sun with this Nakshatra enhances the
instinctofdominionandthecapacitytoruleoverothers.Itbrushes
up human intelligence, making it more luminous and makes a
man vibrant with life and light. The symbol is a closed hand or
fist. It would follow that is signifies determination and clenched
resolution. To keep everybody within one’s grip, the possessive
instinct follows from the nature of this star. The magician and
the pick-pocket are also born under this star - variation from
nobler attributes. Those born in the star Hasta are stable bodied,
untruthful, bear excellent character and warriors. They are givers,
independent, famous, interested in the worshipping of gods and
pious people, and likely to get all the properties of their father.
They are learned, handsome, wealthy, daring, helpful to others
and all knowledgeable. They are cruel and grab others’ property.
They are bad people, strong, interested in music, happy with
their relatives and friends, respected by kings, respect the gods

Viswakarma, the great artist and artificer to the Gods, the lord
of practical arts and applied aesthetics. He blesses this star with
the knowledge and capacity to paint, the gift of narration and
well-ordered conversation. From Chitra is derived the painter,
specialist in paints, the artist, the musician, the skilful surgeon,
the imaginative writer, the specialist in aromatic herbs and
dreamer of intricate patterns. The art of construction, the art
of engraving, embroidery, frame-making and everything that
constitutes an artistic complex from fine embroidery and on the
other hand industrial engineering, skill and the organization of
Karma 4
machinery and plants - everything is caused or influenced by
Chitra. Those born in the star Chitra are extremely fearful of
low mind suffer from hunger, and troubled in mind. They are
weak and perverse sexed. They are troubled by their enemies,
obedient, capable and wear peculiar dresses. They advance
peculiar arguments. Those born in the Chitra star are experts
in love making, bright, wealthy, enjoyers and learned. They are
probably distorted (personalities), strong, brave, endowed with

Swati Nakshatra:
Spread from 6:40’ to 20: Thula. Lord is Sukra, the deity is
the Wind and because of this latter factor this causes the
attributes of the wind. Restlessness of disposition or physical
restlessness, inability to stay still at any place comes from it;
also fidgetiness and noise. It is self-assured and asserting. The
winds are the Lords of North-West. From these are derived the
knowledge, the physical internal adjustments of the 5 Winds -
Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana and Samana. Also from this comes
the storms and the whirl-wind, the concrete disturbance of the
atmosphere, A person born under this star is good at buying
and selling, his wealth and property come and go quite easily.
He is an independent sort of man, always striving for more
independence. Asceticism is yet another attribute of this star.
Diseases of the wind are to be treated in reference to this. The
Wind is the great scavenger, it sweats the dross and purifies.
The winnowing of rice bears comparison to this. Those born in
the star Swati are wise, witty and learned. They are religious
and pleasant minded. They are endowed with the body of kingly
symbols, bright and handsome and loved by their wives. They

is derived the fulfillment of action, variety of enterprise,
achievement irrespective of the means employed and fearless
and unscrupulous pursuit of self-interest. Real friendship hardly
happens. A man born under this star works at various things
but hardly concentrates on any one of them. To spread about
and to dissipate is another attribute of this star. The native of
this star aims at success and is pleased with it when it happens,
nothing else matters. Among other attributes may be mentioned
obedience to religious injunctions, quickness of the uptake, and
also loss and disaster from enemies, sometimes even death or
lunacy. Those born in the Vishakha star are physically impure,

are complimentary to each other. From Anuradha is derived
friendship, love, affection and other tender feature of a person’s
character. From Visakha is considered the ultimate objective
while from Anuradha is indicated the ‘action’. The difference
Karma 5
between Visakha and Anuradha is that while the Visakha-
native forgets after success about benefits derived as also the
persons who helped, the Anuradha-native retains soft feeling
about them, he keeps his friendship intact and does not forget
the benefits. The Anuradha-native’s mind is always alive and
receptive to all feelings and gestures of friendship and love.
He is like the sentinel always a mounting guard over emotions,
but lacking the hardness or toughness of the official sentinel.
Those born in the star Anuradha are interested in women, with
commendable complexion of the body, bewildered, idle and
weak minded. They are famous, experts in arts, and destroyers
of their enemies. They are servers of king, brave, stationed
in countries other than their own, handsome, and destroyers
of their sins. They are truthful, respect kings, respect their
mothers and are musicians. They enjoy life and go after other
women. They are fit for friendship, kind hearted, of helping

rendered by others, aged looking, stingy, untruthful, bad
persons and bereft of relatives, are those born in the first pada.
Jyestha Nakshatra:

Mangal, the deity is Indra, equivalent to Lord Sun, the King of
the firmament. Indra is the great lord, the mighty warrior and a
hero among heroes by tradition and in the plenitude of power
he reigns supreme. He is the first among courtesans. When
this star is unfavorable it causes sorrow and poverty. Those
born in the Jyeshtha star are fond of daily physical exercises,
warriors, always respecting brahmins, famous and endowed
with fine qualities. They gain fame, are bright, accompany
kings, affected in mind, deeply idle, well known, and speak
final. They are addicted to bad jobs, capable of undergoing
difficulties, unbearable, cruel, untruthful and wealthy. They
are tall and endowed with few children. They are pure and
intelligent. They are religious and have a good circle of
friends; they are poets and wise. They are generally dark
complexioned, happy, stable and much learned. Those born
in the first pada are writers, witty people, pleasant faced, sexy
and attracted by women. They are liked by all, interested in
discussion of the scriptures and happy.
In the next issue I will meet you all with the remaining set
of nine stars. I pray Lord Shiva and Vanadurga to shower
their entire blessings on all of us to have a trouble free and
comfortable life.

In Vedic astrology the planet Saturn is called SANI.
In Sanskrit Sani comes from SANISCHARA, which
means, “slow mover”. From Sani we get the word
“shun”, which means to ignore, or lose awareness
of something. Thus, Saturn represents a loss of
awareness, or ignorance.
This loss of awareness can
also mean the diminishing
awareness of the material
world of manifestation. Here
Saturn indicates the ascetic,
rich with inner spirituality,
and lost to this material
plane of existence. Saturn
is a malefic graha. He rules
over the two signs, Capricorn
and Aquarius. He is exalted
in Libra, and fallen in the
opposite sign of Aries.
Saturn is a karaka, or indicator
of longevity, misery, sorrow,
old age and death, discipline,
restriction, responsibility,
delays, ambition, leadership
and authority, humility,
integrity, and wisdom born
of experience. Saturn also
indicates asceticism, denial,
non-attachment, spirituality,
hard work, organization,
reality and time itself. Saturn’s
most powerful place in the
chart is in the 7th House and the
Kendra’s, or Angles. He is a particularly beneficial planet
for Taurus and Libra Ascendants. Saturn’s nature is Vata,
or Airy. His gem is Blue Sapphire and all black stones
and his metal is Lead. Saturn’s direction is west and his
day is Saturday. He reaches full maturity at age 36. In
Vedic myth Saturn is the son of the Lord Sun, born to his
shadow wife, Chaya. Saturn is lame because one of the
Sun’s first wife Sanjana’s children became angered with
him and struck him in the foot. Thus Saturn walks with a
limp, which accounts why he is the slowest of the Grahas.
The graha SANISCHARA
(Saturn), also known as Manda,
is generally known to affect one
adversely on occasions when
he occupies certain positions
in one’s horoscope like Saade
Sati (7 1/2 years) Ashtama Sani
(Saturn in 8th house - 2 1/2 years)
etc. He is the Lord of Makaram
and Kumbam. He is the slowest
moving planet taking 2 1/2 years
in each Rasi, completing one
cycle every 30 years. A prayer
to this Devata, especially on
Saturdays, is said to mitigate the
hardships one will have to face
during these periods. Sanischara
bestows all benefits to the
devotees who pray sincerely to
him. There is on individual shrine
for Lord Sani in the entire USA.
Hindu Temple of Ohio is the only
Temple that has an individual
shrine for Lord Sani (Saturn).
Those who are having problems
with 71/2 Saturn (Sade Sathi) or
any other problems can come to
this Temple, perform prescribed
rituals, get the blessings of Lord
Sani and get the best spiritual salvation for all kinds of
problems. To know more and more about the specified

Swamiji
Sri. Selvam
Siddhar is very
fond and affectionate
to children. His idea is if
the children are well cultured,
the entire society will be well. So, he
use to tell short moral stories to the kids
in all the satsangs. Here is some moral stories
for children. The moral is not only for children but
for all.
Please God
A sage observed seven dark women walking by his hermitage
every morning and return clean and beautiful. He asked them
who they were. They said, ‘We are the seven seas. When people
come and wash their sins in our waters, we grow dark...There
is a person who, when we go and circumambulate him, the sins
wash away and we regain our true nature’. Curious, he enquired
about that person endowed with such powers.
They replied, ‘He is Pundalika, a boy famous for his devotion
towards his parents. God visited that boy’s house, and Pundalika
requested Him to stand on a couple of bricks till he finished doing
‘pada pooja’ to his parents. Pleased with the boy’s devotion,
God manifested in the form of Panduranga. Pundalika ranks
high as one of the four prime devotees of the Lord (Prahalada,
Parasara, Narada, and Pundalika). Here is a devotee who did
not neglect his worldly responsibilities and God placed him on
a high pedestal.
The path you have chosen to lead your life is not so important,
as fulfilling the responsibilities associated with that path. How
well you play your part in this drama of life decides how close
you become to God.
LOVING OR FEIGNING LOVE
There is this story of a person who assumed that the world
is permanent. A sage advised him of the transience of
the world; that all relationships are false. But the man
was not willing to believe what the hermit said. The
sage told him, ‘I will give you a pill, eat it and you
will be physically immobile for a day as if you are
dead, but you will be conscious. Then you will understand
the true nature of the world by the happenings around you.The
man took the pill and feigned death. When the hermit reached
the man’s house, the wife sobbed inconsolably, ‘O Sage! My
husband has departed at such a young age’, to which the sage
replied, ‘I can revive him, provided one of you sacrifice your life
for his sake’. The man’s aged parents told the hermit, ‘We need
to go on pilgrimages to Kasi and Rameswaram; we cannot give
up our lives before that’. The children said, ‘Our mother will
take care of us; it will compensate for our father’. The hermit
told the wife, ‘You seem to be in much greater grief than the
others. I can save your husband if you can give up your life
for him’, to which the wife replied, ‘Even when this person
was alive, he was frittering away his life under the influence of
drinks. I will take care of the family’. The hermit said, ‘What is
this? I am asking one of you
to give up your life to save
him; none of you seem to
care for him’ to which the
entire family chorused,
‘Swami! You do not have
any relations in the world,
nor do you have any wants.
Why do not you sacrifice
your life for him? We will
construct a Samadhi for you
and will worship you on your anniversary’, and the hermit fled!
That is how the world is. Only ten percent of the world knows to
love; the remaining 90% are busy flaunting love for getting their
work done. They do not care if saints suffer from stomachache;
their focus is ‘if the saint accepts what I offer, then it is good for
me’and therefore they will thrust on the saints whatever they get
from a cheaper store.
Palakkai Pirattal
This is yet another chettinad delicacy made out of baby jack fruit
which will go very well with curd rice, Rasam Rice, Chappathi
or Paratha. This is also a common item in a grand chettinad
vegetarian lunch.
Ingredients
Baby jack fruit (cut into small pieces), Potato-1, Big onion-1,
Tomato-1
To Grind
Coconut grated-3 table spoons, Red chilli-5, Pottukadalai-1
table spoon
Cashwes-4(optional), Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon
To season
Cinamon-2 small pieces, Cloves-2, Cardomom-2,Fennel seeds-1
teaspoon
Procedure
Peel off the skin from the baby jack fruit and cut as shown. Cut
the potato also in the same size. Chop the onion and tomatoes
also. In a small cooker or pressure pan cook the cut jack fruit
and potatoes for 1 whistle in high flame. This will get cooked
fast and will get smashed if over cooked. So if you are not sure
when to switch off then cook it in microwave or in a kadai in
such a way that the pieces are just correctly cooked. Grind the
items given in ‘To grind’to a smooth paste. Now keep the kadai
in the stove. In two tablespoons of oil season the curry with the
items given in ‘To season’. Add the onions and tomatoes and
saute nicely till oil separates. Now add the grinded masal and
salt needed and sauté till it gets cooked well and oil separates
in medium fire. Add ¼ cup of water to this and put the cooked
baby jack fruit and potato pieces. Mix everything nicely in such
a way that you don’t smash the pieces and cook in medium fire
for 5 to 7 minutes till oil separates.

Poorana Kozhukattai (Vinayaga Chathurthi Special)
When we were kids, the first thing that will come to our mind
about Vinayakar Chathurthi is the sweet poorna kuzhakattai and
sundal that will be made in all houses and distributed among the
neighboring houses on that day. We used to compare the softness
of the kozhukattai made in different houses.
Though I love poorna kuzhakattai,I used to make modagam
which is more favorite to vinayagar. But this year I wanted to
share this recipe with my readers.
Ingredients
Raw rice -200 gms (1 uzhakku) (Here we get mavu
pacharisi),Powdered jaggery-1/2 cup,grated coconut-1/2
cup,Cardomom-2,Ghee -2 teaspoon,Gingelly oil-1 tablespoon
Method
Soak the rice for an hour. Grind it well in a mixie. The batter
can be watery. After grinding add 1/4 teaspoon salt and teaspoon
gingelly oil into the batter. The batter can be like dosa batter.
Keep a kadai in the stove. Boil 3/4 cup water and pour the
ground batter into the water and stir nicely. The batter will turn
like a ball in a minute or two. Switch off the stove. Divide the
batter into three portions and knead it into a smooth ball. Make
it into a single ball and cover it with a wet tissue or cloth. Now
for the coconut poornam , Keep the kadai in the stove.pour 1/4
cup water. Add the jaggery into the water. Once the jaggerry
dissolves, strain the jaggerry using a filter to remove impurities.
Wash the kadai and pour back the jaggerry and boil till it turns
sticky. In medium fire it can be boiled for 3 to 4 minutes. Now
add the coconut, ghee and the powdered cardamom and stir well
Karma 8
Aachi’s Samayal ( Cooking )
Karma 9
till there is not much water content. Don’t keep the coconut for
a long tome in the stove. Switch off with in two minutes else the
coconut will get roasted. Now the poornam is ready.
Now we have to make the kozhukattai and keep the poornam
inside. In Tamilnadu lot of ready made achu (moulds) is
available. But if you don’t have achu also no problem. The batter
will listen to your needs. Make small balls. Spread it into flat
thin circles or make small kinnams. Little bit gingili oil can also
be used for spreading. Youngsters today will do a better work of
making different shapes than us. Keep the poornam inside and
cover nicely. If you make the first type stick the ends nicely.
Steam the kozhukattai in idly pot or stand. Remember you have
to put a cloth or tissue on the idly plate before steaming else the
steam from below will change the color of the kozhukattai.
Chakkarai pongal or Sarkkarai pongal (sweet Rice)
This Rice is the queen of pongal. The idea of making this pongal
on the first day of Thai month, was to make a sweet first out of
the newly harvested rice. Now time has changed. Agriculture
is no more the main occupation of many. But we continue to
celebrate the function with some raw rice we get in the store. To
our future generations we should try to explain the importance
of this function to the farmer and the agriculturists
In those days pongal was kept outside the house in the open for
sun God. Now in our system of living we can’t do that and we
have ended up in making pongal in the pressure cooker in our
kitchen. Till today, I have managed to make pongal on the pongal
day in the pongal panai in the dining room keeping the gas stove
down .But in this method there is a risk of pongal getting burnt
if we are not careful. So I advice the younger generation to make
it in the cooker itself which is a safe and sure method
Ingredients
Raw rice-1 cup,Grated jaggerry-1 cup, Broken green gram-
handful (pasiparuppu) Ghee 3 table spoons, Cashews-10,
Raisins-handful, Powdered cardamom-1,teaspoon
Procedure
Wash the rice and pasiparuppu and cook in the pressure cooker
with 3 cups of water in medium fire for 10 minutes. Meantime
dissolve the jaggerry in a cup of water in the stove. Strain it using
a stainless steel strainer .Keep it back in the stove and bring the
mixture to a boil for 2 minutes. After the pressure goes open the
cooker. Smash the rice nicely with a flat ladle. Slowly pour the
jaggerry water into the cooker mixing well .Switch on the stove
now and in low fire mix everything nicely. Switch off the stove
in 2 minutes. Remember the pongal will solidify once it cools.
If you want you can add little milk also instead of water while
cooking rice. In a small frying pan, in a tablespoon of ghee fry
the cashews after breaking it into small pieces in low fire. Add
this also into the cooker. Fry the raisins also and along with that
ghee add everything into the pongal. Add the cardamom powder
and a tablespoon of ghee and mix well. Your pongal is ready.
While serving you can use the remaining 1 tablespoon of ghee.
Modagam
This is the favorite sweet of Lord Ganesha or Pillayar as we call
in Tamil. So this is commonly made in all houses in Tamilnadu
during Vinayaga Chathurthi. This is different from Poorna
Kuzhakkattai which is a sweet stuffed one. Modagam is made
with broken rice like Rava and Jaggerry. One of my readers is
urgently in need of this recipe, so no more time for stories.
Ingredients
Rice (broken like Rava)-2 cups,Jaggerry-2 cups,Water-6 cups
(3 cups of water for 1 cup rice),Grated coconut-1/4 cup,Ghee-3
tablespoons
Broken Green gram-1/4 cup (pasiparuppu), Cardomom-4
(powder it along with a teaspoon of sugar in the mixie)
Procedure
Wash the rice. Spread it under the fan for an hour in newspaper
till the rice gets dried. Those who can’t dry can keep it in
microwave for a minute. Put it in the mixie and powder it like
rava. For making the modagam, first roast the rava in a tablespoon
of ghee for 2 minutes. In a kadai pour 6 cups of water. Add the
jaggerry. When the jaggerry water boils strain it using a steel
strainer to remove the impurities. After straining pour back the
jaggerry water into the kadai and when the water starts boiling
add the broken rice and the green gram. Mix well. Add a table
Karma 10
spoon of ghee. Keep the flame very low. Close the kadai. The
rice will get cooked in 10 minutes. Open the kadai now and then
mix. Once the rice appears to be cooked, add the grated coconut,
powdered cardamom and one more table spoon of ghee. Switch
of the stove. Allow it to cool for 5 minutes. Make small balls and
steam it in idly pan for 8 minutes.
Ma Vilakku or Mavu Vilakku (Rice flour Deepam)
In Tamilnadu (I am not sure about other states), there is a practice
of making Rice dough with jaggery and lighting a deepam for
our favorite God or Goddesses on auspicious days like AAdi
Velli , Purattasi Sani etc. In olden days sweet was a very rare
item at home and children used to wait for this hand grinded
dough (iditha maavu). Now those days have gone and making
rice flour has become a difficult task. For the sake of youngsters
who have seen their parents keeping maa vilakku regularly and
want to continue it, here is the recipe.
Ingredients
Raw Rice (medium quality) – 200 gms (1 azhakku)
Jaggery-200 gms (powdered 1 cup) while buying go for little bit
white colored jiggery
Cardomom-3
Ghee-2 table spoons
Procedure
Wash the rice nicely and soak for just 10 minutes. Now strain it
and spread it on a newspaper under the fan. Let this dry for just
10 minutes (If it is dried more, you can’t make the flour. Now put
all the rice in the big jar of the mixie and grind at a stretch for 2
minutes. Sieve the rice with the help of a medium holed sieve.
Grind again till everything is done. Powder the jaggery nicely
with a stone or slice it with the help of a knife.
The next part is making the dough. Powder the cardamom along
with a teaspoon of sugar in the small jar and take the powder
alone. Add it to the rice flour. Slowly add the jiggery to the flour
kept in a flat vessel and mix it with your hand. Initially you will
feel Oh how am I going to make the dough. Don’t worry. Surely
dough will turn perfect. If you find it difficult, keep aside the
vessel closed for 5 minutes. Now the dough will be little loose.
Add a teaspoon of Ghee and mix again till your dough is perfect.
Excess jaggery will make the dough watery. In that case extra
flour has to be added. I am sure you will not be short of jaggery
if this measurement is followed. Don’t transfer it into the vessel
in which you light deepam. Put it in a Zip lock bag and keep it in
the vessel in which you want to light the deepam and take to the
temple. Just before lighting transfer it into the vessel. Make the
dough a round ball and keep inside the vessel. Press the centre
of the dough with your thumb. Inside that hole pour half spoon
ghee and light the lamp keeping the thread in the middle, Press
one end of the thread inside the dough nicely so that the thread
stands erect. Now light the lamp and get the blessings of Soolini
Ma, and Vana Durga of Hindu Temple of Ohio.

Over the past issues we have discussed a few points about
Spirituality as explained in the Upanishads, the Bhagavad-
Gita, and the Ramayana. In this issue we will discuss the
Spirituality found in Mahabharata. I whole heartedly thank
the Almighty and my Swamiji for blessing me with more
opportunities to express my ideas on Spirituality.
The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of
ancient India, the other being the Ramayana. The epic is part
of the Hindu Itihasa, and forms an important part of Hindu
Philosophy. It is of immense importance to the culture of
the Indian Subcontinent, and is a major text in Hinduism. Its
discussion of the human goals: Dharma (duty), Artha (purpose),
Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (liberation), takes place in a long-
standing tradition, attempting to explain the relationship of the
individual to society, the world and the workings of Karma.
With more than 74,000 verses the Mahabharata is one of the
longest epic poems in the world. It is about four times the size
of the Ramayana. Including the Harivamsa, the Mahabharata
has a total length of more than 90,000 verses. Besides its epic
narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas
and the Pandavas, the Mahabharata contains much philosophical
and devotional material, such as the Shrimad Bhagavad-Gita,
or a discussion of the four “goals of
life,” (purusharthas). The later are
enumerated as Dharma (right action),
Artha (purpose), Kama (pleasure),
and Moksha (liberation). This great
epic was dictated to Lord Ganesha
by the great
sage Veda Vyasa. Since Lord Ganesha cannot find the proper
writing materials, he broke one of his tusks and wrote the epic
on the hill called Meru.
Among the principal works and stories that are a part of the
Mahabharata, the following are very famous. This book is
divided into eighteen “parvas” or books. The parvas are again
subdivided into chapters. The last two chapters are called the
Harivamsa and it tells about the life and death of Lord Krishna.
Here I will describe the eighteen books.
1.Adi Parva The Book of the Beginning (The word “adi” means
first) explains how the Mahabharata came to be narrated by
Sauti to the assembled rishis at Naimisharanya. Vaishampayana
recited the Mahabharata at the Sarpayaga, which was conducted
by Janamejaya. (Vaishampayana is the other name of sage Veda
Vyasa.) The history of the Bharata race is told in detail, and the
book also traces history of the Bhrigu race - The birth and early
life of the Kuru princes.
Karma 12
2. Sabha Parva The Book of the Assembly Hall describes Maya
Danava erecting the palace and court (sabha), at Indraprastha,
the life at the court, Yudhishthira’s Rajasuya Yajna, the game of
dice, and the eventual exile of the Pandavas.
3. Vana Parva (also Aranyaka-parva) The Book of the Forest
covers the twelve years of exile in the forest (aranya).
4. Virata Parva The Book of Virata recounts the year in incognito
spent at the court of Virata.
5. Udyoga Parva The Book of the Effort tells of the preparations
for war and the efforts to bring about peace between the Kurus
and the Pandavas which eventually fail (“udyoga” means effort
or work).
6. Bhishma Parva The Book of Bhishma goes over the first
part of the great battle, with Bhishma as the commander for the
Kauravas and his fall on a bed of arrows.
7. Drona Parva In the Book of Drona, the battle continues, with
Drona as commander. This is the major book of the war. Most
of the great warriors on both sides are dead by the end of this
book.
8. Karna Parva In the Book of Karna, the battle is narrated
again, now with Karna as the commander.
9. Shalya Parva, means “The Book of Shalya.” Here is the
description of the last day of battle, with Shalya as commander.
Told in detail, is the pilgrimage of Balarama to the fords of
the river Saraswati and the mace fight between Bheema
and Duryodhana, which ends the war when Bheema kills
Duryodhana by smashing him on the thighs with a mace.
10. Sauptika Parva (The Book of the Sleeping Warriors)
Ashvattama, Kripa and Kritavarma kill the remaining Pandava
army in their sleep. Only seven warriors remain on the Pandava
side and three on the Kaurava side.
11. Stri Parva (The Book of the Women) Here, Gandhari, Kunti
and the women (stri) of the Kurus and the Pandavas lament
their dead.
12. Shanti Parva (“Shanti” means peace) The Book of Peace
covers the crowning of Yudhisthira as king of Hastinapura, and
the instructions from Bhishma for the newly anointed king on
society, economics, and politics. This is the longest book of the
Mahabharata.
13. Anushasana Parva The Book of the Instructions are the final
instructions from Bhishma (“anushasana” means rules and
regulations).
14. Ashvamedhika Parva The Book of the Horse Sacrifice is the
royal ceremony of theAshvamedha (Horse Sacrifice) conducted
by Yudhisthira. Also covered is the world conquest by Arjuna.
And the Anugita (supplementary to Srimad Bhagavad-Gita) is
told by Krishna to Arjuna.
15. Ashramavasika Parva (The Book of the Hermitage) In this
book we have the eventual deaths of Dhritarashtra, Gandhari,
and Kunti in a forest fire when they are living in a hermitage
in the Himalayas. Vidura predeceases them and Sanjaya on
Dhritarashtra’s bidding goes to live in the higher Himalayas.
16. Mausala Parva The Book of the Clubs describes the
infighting between the Yadavas with maces (mausala) and the
eventual destruction of theYadavas.
17. Mahaprasthanika Parva (The Book of the Great Journey)
This is the great journey of Yudhisthira and his brothers across
the whole country and finally their ascent of the great Himalayas
where each Pandava falls except for Yudhisthira.
18. Svargarohana Parva (The Book of the Ascent to Heaven)
Here is Yudhisthira’s final test, and the return of the Pandavas
to the spiritual world (svarga).
Out of these eighteen great books, the morality to be adopted
by an individual is mostly taught. The rules and regulations
told in these great books are applicable from the topmost to
the bottommost in society. By adopting the rules, regulations,
and morality of the Mahabharata, one can become a practical
example to the entire world. The intellectual giants like Bishma,
Drona, Yudishtira, and Lord Krishna showed the path that leads
to a peaceful and spiritual life. They are the important rules
and practical lessons for leading a calm, peaceful, and brave,
spiritual life.
Karma 13
Karma 14
In Book 6 (Bhishma Parva) of The Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna
advises and teaches Arjuna when he is riddled with doubt.
These teachings are not only meant for Arjuna but for one and
all in the universe. The teachings match from the day of epics
until today. It will also match well for the future also. As a
great epic, the Mahabharata has put forth an enormous effort
to cultivate spirituality and moralities into the regular lives of
human beings. There is no spiritual partiality in the human race
from emperor to the last citizen.
The core story of the work is that of a dynastic struggle for
the throne of Hastinapura, the kingdom ruled by the Kuru clan.
The two collateral branches of the family that participate in
the struggle are the Kaurava and the Pandava. Although the
Kaurava is the senior branch of the family, Duryodhana, the
eldest Kaurava, is younger than Yudhisthira, the eldest Pandava.
Both Duryodhana and Yudhisthira claim to the first in line to
inherit the throne. The struggle culminates in the great battle of
Kurukshetra, in which the Pandavas are ultimately victorious.
The battle produces complex conflicts of kinship and friendship,
instances of family loyalty and duty taking precedence over
what is right, as well as the converse. The Mahabharata itself
ends with the death of Lord Krishna, and the subsequent end
of his dynasty, and ascent of the Pandava brothers to heaven. It
also marks the beginning of the Hindu age of Kali (Kali Yuga),
the fourth and final age of mankind, where the great values
and noble ideas have crumbled, and man is heading toward the
complete dissolution of right action, morality and virtue.
By reading and understanding the Mahabharata one can easily
understand what humanity is and what all the essentialities
of humanity are. By being the best human the Yudishtira has
shown himself to be the best example for human beings. Even
though he was hurt in many ways, he never backed away from
his Dharma. That’s why he is remembered as Dharmaputra. He
stands as an example of Dharma. He never cared for anything
other than Dharma. The next is Bheema. He stands as an
example for his dedicated devotion. For wherever he was, he
used to worship Lord Shiva. He got a lot of boons from Lord
Shiva. And even though he got lot of boons from Lord Shiva,
he never misused them. The next is Arjuna. He had the closest
relationship with Lord Krishna. Even though he had Lord
Krishna’s closest relationship, he never misused it either. The
next celebrity in the epic is Karna. He is the practical example
of thankfulness and friendship. He even sacrificed his life for
the sake of friendship and thankfulness.
Just like the aforesaid, there are lots of examples in the entire
epic. These are all on the positive side. The epic has plenty of
examples on the negative sides as well. These examples are
Duriyodana, Duchathana, Sakuni, and many more people. By
looking at these people one can clearly understand how one
should not behave in society.
Out of these eighteen books the 1st to 5th explain the complete
life of the prince, princess, kings and queens. The 6th book to
11th book talks about the battle. The 12th book tells about the
peace.Thebooknumber13hasthestandardrulesandregulations
formulated by the greatest scholar Bishma. By following these
rules and regulations one can set a practical example to society,
and one can be the best spiritual human being possible. The
same book contains the “Vishnu Sahasranamam” (one thousand
eight names of Lord Mahavishnu).
Book 14 tells the duties of an emperor or a king. It also details
the procedure of the greatest ritual, called Ashvamedha,
conducted by Yudishtira. Book 15 details about the retired life
of Drutarashtra and his wife. It also describes the last minutes
of Drutharashtra, his wife, and Padava’s mother Kunti. Book
16 tells about the war between the Yadhavas. It is kind of a
family feud. Because of this group infighting the Yadhava
dynasty itself was ruined. Book 17 explains the journey of
Pandavas across the whole country and it contains discussions
of Yudishtira with the god of Dharma. It is considered one of the
most important parts of the great epic. This section tells about
the basic morality to be followed by normal mortal mankind.
Book 18 is the ending of the great epic. It explains the results of
Yudishtira and tells about the return of Pandavas to the spiritual
world.
One cannot become great by simply reading through the books
of spirituality. However, if everybody tries to follow the basic
moralities taught in the holy books; then, society will become
great. There will be no struggles at all. The entire universe will
be a “universe of peace.” As per the sayings of Swamiji Sri
Selvam Siddhar, we all can have a very comfortable living. I
thank the Almighty and Swamiji for giving me this opportunity
to share my thoughts on spirituality. I pray that they continue to
bless me with more and more chances to share my thoughts on
spirituality. Om Shanti.

The Monkey and the Crocodile
Once upon a time, a clever monkey lived in a tree that bore juicy,
red rose apples. He was very happy.
One fine day, a crocodile swam up to that tree and told the
monkey that he had traveled a long distance and was in search of
food as he was very hungry. The kind monkey offered him a few
rose apples. The crocodile enjoyed them very much and asked
the monkey whether he could come again for some more fruit.
The generous monkey happily agreed.
The crocodile returned the next day. And the next. And the next
one after that. Soon the two became very good friends. They
discussed their lives, their friends and family, like all friends
do. The crocodile told the monkey that he had a wife and that
they lived on the other side of the river. So the kind monkey
offered him some extra rose apples to take home to his wife. The
crocodile’s wife loved the rose apples and made her husband
promise to get her some every day.
Meanwhile, the friendship between the monkey and the
crocodile deepened as they spent more and more time together.
The crocodile’s wife started getting jealous. She wanted to put
an end to this friendship. So she pretended that she could not
believe that her husband could be friends with a monkey. Her
husband tried to convince her that he and the monkey shared a
true friendship. The crocodile’s wife thought to herself that if
the monkey lived on a diet of rose monkeys, his flesh would be
very sweet. So she asked the crocodile to invite the monkey to
their house.
The crocodile was not happy about this. He tried to make the
excuse that it would be difficult to get the monkey across the
river. But his wife was determined to eat the monkey’s flesh. So
she thought of a plan.
One day, she pretended to be very ill and told the crocodile that
the doctor said that she would only recover if she ate a monkey’s
heart. If her husband wanted to save her life, he must bring her
his friend’s heart.
The crocodile was aghast. He was in a dilemma. On the one
hand, he loved his friend. On the other, he could not possibly let
his wife die. The crocodile’s wife threatened him saying that if
he did not get her the monkey’s heart, she would surely die.
So the crocodile went to the rose apple tree and invited the
monkey to come home to meet his wife. He told the monkey
that he could ride across the river on the crocodile’s back. The
monkey happily agreed. As they reached the middle of the river,
the crocodile began to sink. The frightened monkey asked him
why he was doing that. The crocodile explained that he would
have to kill the monkey to save his wife’s life. The clever monkey
told him that he would gladly give up his heart to save the life of
the crocodile’s wife, but he had left his heart behind in the rose
apple tree. He asked the crocodile to make haste and turn back
so that the monkey could go get his heart from the apple tree.
The silly crocodile quickly swam back to the rose apple tree. The
monkey scampered up the tree to safety. He told the crocodile
to tell his wicked wife that she had married the biggest fool in
the world.
The Stork and the Crab
Once upon a time, there was a stork that caught the fish in a
particular tank. The stork always had a full meal. As the years
went by, the stork grew older and weaker. His ability to catch
fish diminished. At times he would even starve. He knew he had
to do something to survive.
One day he stood by the side of the tank with a very forlorn look
on his face. The frogs, fish and crabs wondered why he was not
trying to catch any food. A big crab asked him what the matter
was. The stork answered that he was sad because all the fish in
Karma 21
the tank were going to die and he would have to starve. He said
that he had heard that people were going to fill the tank with
mud and grow crops over it. The fish were very worried and
asked the stork to help them.
The stork offered to take all of them to a bigger tank some
distance away. But he said that he needed to rest between trips
because of his age. He would only be able to carry a few fish
at a time.
The stork took a beakful of fish on his first trip. He flew to a big
rock and had a good meal. He rested awhile, and when he was
hungry again, he took a second trip. In this manner, he took a
trip each time that he was hungry.
The big crab in the tank also wanted to save himself and he
requested the stork to take him too. The stork thought it was a
good idea to try a new dish. He agreed to take the crab on his
next trip.
After the stork flew up with him, the crab looked down to see
what his new surrounding would be like. All he could see was
dry land. He questioned the stork about this. The stork laughed
wickedly and pointed to the rock below where the crab saw
a heap of fish bones. The crab realized that he was to be the
stork’s next meal. So the crab dug his claws into the stork’s neck
and would not let go till the stork fell to the ground. The crab
then cut off the stork’s head and returned home to show it to all
the other fish and share the story of his adventure.
Pundit Ji Sevaram
One day a Brahmin by the name of Sevaram asked Birbal for
help. He said that his forefathers were great Sanskrit scholars
and that people used to respectfully refer to them as Panditji. He
said that he had no money nor need for wealth; he was content
living a simple life. But he had just one wish. He wished people
would refer to him as Panditji too. He asked Birbal how he
could achieve this.
Birbal said that the task was fairly simple. If the Brahmin
followed his advice word for word, this task could be achieved.
Birbal advised the Brahmin to shout at anyone who would call
him Panditji from now on.
Now the children who lived on the same street as the Brahmin
did not like him since he scolded them often. They were just
waiting for an opportunity to get back at him. Birbal told the
children that the Brahmin would get really irritated if they
would start calling him Panditji. The children started calling
him Panditji and the Brahmin as advised by Birbal started
shouting at them. The children spread the word to all the other
children in the neighborhood that Sevaram hated being called
Panditji, so they in turn all started calling him Panditji. After a
while, Sevaram got tired of scolding them but everyone already
was used to call him Panditji. Hence the game was over but the
name stuck.
The Three Questions
King Akbar was very fond of Birbal. This made a certain
courtier very jealous. Now this courtier always wanted to be
chief minister, but this was not possible as Birbal filled that
position. One day Akbar praised Birbal in front of the courtier.
This made the courtier very angry and he said that the king
praised Birbal unjustly and if Birbal could answer three of his
questions, he would accept the fact that Birbal was intelligent.
Akbar always wanted to test Birbals wit readily agreed.
The three questions were
1. How many stars are there in the sky?
2. Where is the centre of the Earth?
3. How many men and how many women are there in the world?
Immediately Akbar asked Birbal the three questions and
informed him that if he could not answer them, he would have
to resign as chief minister.
To answer the first question, Birbal brought a hairy sheep and
said there are as many stars in the sky as there is hair on the
sheep’s body. My friend the courtier is welcome to count them
if he likes.
To answer the second question, Birbal drew a couple of lines
on the floor and bore an iron rod in it and said, this is the centre
of the Earth, the courtier may measure it himself if he has any
doubts.
In answer to the third question, Birbal said Counting the exact
number of men and women in the world would be a problem
as there are some specimens like our courtier friend here who
cannot easily be classified as either. Therefore if all people
like him are killed, then and only then can one count the exact
number.
The Golden Goose
Once upon a time there lived a queen in the city of Benaras. Her
name was Khema and she was the wife of King Bahuputraka,
which means ‘father of many sons’. One night, the Queen
had a dream of a beautiful golden goose that spoke with great
wisdom, almost as if he was a sage. She told her husband that
Karma 22
she desperately wanted to see a bird just like the one that she had
seen in her dream.
So the King asked his ministers to find out all that they could
about a bird such as this. He was told that such a bird did exist
but was extremely rare and difficult to find. They advised him to
build a beautiful lake on the outskirts of Benaras so that he may
attract such rare and lovely creatures to reside there. In this way
the queen might have her wish.
Towards the north, on Mount Cittakuta, there lived about ninety
thousand wild geese headed by a beautiful golden goose called
King Dhatarattha. He got to hear of this exquisite lake that was
surrounded by flowers and trees and had lovely water lilies and
lotuses floating on the surface. The king had named this lake
after his wife Khema and had invited all the birds to come and
live on it, promising that none of them would ever be harmed.
Corn was scattered on a daily basis in order to attract the birds.
So a couple of geese went up to their King and told him that they
were quite tired of living up on the mountains and would like to
see this wonderful lake where they had been promised food and
protection.
The king agreed to their request and took the whole flock down
south towards Benaras.
Meanwhile, at the lake the King had placed hunters all around in
order to capture any golden goose that happened to pass by. So
the next morning when the headhunter saw this flock of geese
approaching he was very excited to see their golden leader. He
immediately went about setting up a snare amongst the water
lilies and lotuses, as he knew that the leader would definitely be
the first to alight.
The whole flock came flying down in one mighty swoop and
as expected it was the King’s foot that touched the water first.
He was ensnared and could not escape. Seeing this the other
geese flew into a panic and honked in distress. But none had
the courage to try to free their king and so flew back to Mount
Cittacuta for safety. All except one. He was the chief captain,
Sumukha.
His King entreated him to fly to safety too, as he would surely
be captured if he stayed by his side. But Sumukha replied that he
would never desert his master in the face of danger and would
either try to save him or die by his side.
At this point the head huntsman approached and as Sumukha
saw him he decided to appeal to his compassion. The hunter
asked the King how come he had not noticed the trap that was
set. The golden goose replied that when one’s time was up it
was no use to struggle against what was fated and one must
just accept it. The huntsman was very impressed with his grace
and wisdom. He then turned to Sumukha and asked why he
had not fled with the other birds even though he was free to do
so. Sumukha answered that this was his King, best friend and
master and that he could never desert him even at the cost of his
own life.
Hearing this the hunter realized that these were a couple of rare
birds of great nobility. And were he to harm them, the gods
would certainly punish him. Besides, he did not much care for
his own King’s reward and decided to do the right thing and set
them free. He told Sumukha that as he was ready to die for his
King he would set them both free to fly wherever they may.
He then set loose the foot of the golden goose and washed the
wound clean. And when he made an attempt to fix the dislocated
muscle “lo behold”.. the foot was miraculously whole again as
if it had never been hurt. Sumukha greatly blessed the hunter
for his act of compassion and his King asked whether he had set
the trap for himself or at someone else’s command. The hunter
answered that he had done it on the orders of his own King.
He then went on to narrate to them the whole story about the
queen’s dream and her wish to see this rare golden goose.
On hearing this, the golden goose decided to go and meet the
monarch, as he knew that the hunter would receive his reward.
He had also heard about the wisdom and goodness of King
Bahuputakka and thought that if he appeared out of his own free
will, the monarch might allow him and his flock to come visit
the lake. He therefore asked the hunter to take him to his King.
The hunter advised him against it because he was worried that
his monarch might imprison these two lovely creatures.
But the golden goose explained that just as they had been able
to soften a hunter’s heart it should not be too difficult to do the
same to a great and noble King. He asked him to do his duty and
leave the rest to him.
So the hunter set out to go to the palace accompanied by these
two noble, gorgeous creatures. Needless to say that the King
and Queen were absolutely delighted to see these two beautiful
birds. The King set them on a golden perch and fed them himself,
with honey, grain and sweetened milk. Then he spent the whole
night discussing kingship and all its duties with this King of
Geese. The golden goose did his best to offer good advice and
encouragement in accordance with his wisdom.
InthemorninghethankedtheKingandQueenfortheirhospitality
and friendship and flew back to his flock accompanied by his
faithful friend and chief captain Sumukha.

Our Vedic system recognizes 27 Nakshatra or constellation.
(Sometimes 28, if we include Abhijit Nakshatra which is an
integral part of Ultarashada).
The Nakshatra system is unique to the Vedic system and gives it
much higher level of accuracy. It is believed that the Nakshatra
systemwasprevalentbeforethesignsystemwasevenrecognized.
Each planet, house, sensitive point in zodiac is influenced by the
Nakshatra it occupies at a particular time. We are describing the
results of placement of Moon in each Nakshatra (since this is the
most important tool in Vedic astrology).
The results of your Moon in the Nakshatra (since this is the most
important tool in vedic astrology).Your birth Nakshatra (Janma
Nakshatra) determines your thinking patter, nature as well as
basic destiny. It also determines the instincts as well as the
subconscious aspects of the personality
Various House in the Atharava Vedic Astrogy
According to older Hindu texts, the words signs and houses fall
on each other, but the count of the signs is always made from
Aries which is the first sign. If we say a planet is in the first
sign, it means that he is in Aries. If we say, it is in the fifth sign,
it will be in Leo. If we say, it is in the twelfth sign, it will be in
Pisces because Pisces is the last and the twelfth sign. We must
remember that when referring to a sign we always count Aries as
the first and then proceed in the regular order of the signs.
But a house begins from the ascendant. We must first know which
is the sign ascending at the particular moment at a particular
place. The Earth is globular. It is like a globe with the sky all
around. There is no part of the sky which is not to the east of
any locality of the Earth. We can explain this further by giving a
practical example. The Sun always appears to be somewhere on
the ecliptic. In fact, he is not on the ecliptic; it is the Earth which
is on the ecliptic and as viewed from the Earth, the Sun appears
to be in line with some place on the ecliptic. Now this Sun at any
time appears in the east, in some part or the other of the Earth.
So we may state that as the zodiac is a circular ring in the skies,
though in fact it is elliptic, going all round, some part of the ring,
i.e., the zodiac is on the eastern horizon somewhere.
Now suppose that at a particular time the sign Leo is rising at the
eastern horizon. Then Leo will constitute the first house Virgo
( By His Holiness, Param Pujya Maharishi Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar )
Karma 26
the second house, Libra the third house, Scorpio the fourth house,
Sagittarius the fifth house, Capricorn the sixth house Aquarius
the seventh house, Pisces the eighth house, Aries the ninth house,
Taurus the tenth house, Gemini the Eleventh house and Cancer the
twelfth house. Now suppose that the Sun is n Aquarius. So we say
the Sun is in the seventh house or setting in the western horizon.
If suppose Scorpio was rising at New Delhi. Then Scorpio will be
the first house, Sagittarius the second house. Capricorn the third
house and so on; and the Sun being in Aquarius he will be in the
fourth house.
The following signs being in opposition at 180º, to each other are
called opposition signs:
•Aries is in opposition to Libra and Libra to Aries
•Taurus is in opposition to Scorpio and Scorpio to Taurus
•Gemini is in opposition to Sagittarius and Sagittarius to Gemini
•Cancer is in opposition to Capricorn and Capricorn to Cancer
•Leo is in opposition to Aquarius and Aquarius in Leo
•Virgo is in opposition to Pisces and Pisces to Virgo
So we must remember that the sign rising to the east at a particular
time depends upon the time, date, month, year and the longitude
and latitude of the place.
The latitude is very important because the duration of a sign rising
differs from latitude to latitude.

  • 4. Only by knowing the power of the planets in an individual’s horoscope, one can get a clear conclusion about the individual. The Atharva Veda gives great ideas about the planets and stars even long back before the telescopes were invented. The Astronomy tells about various stars and constellation of stars. But the Vedic Astrology speaks about twenty seven stars and the nature of the persons born in that particular star. This is only a guidline. The nature will vary according to the planets’ position I the horoscope. Anyone, those who wish to know more and more about the planets’ position in their horoscope and to solve the problems in the spiritual way as per the norms of Atharva Veda can contact me at USA Toll Free No. 1-888- 808-1418 or email to avtemple@aol.com. In the past issue I explained about nine stars. In this issue, I wish to write about another set of nine stars. I am going to write about the stars and the nature of the persons born in that particular star. Magha Nakshatra: Spread from 0 degree to 13:20’ Simmam. Lord Sun is the lord of this star and the deity ‘Pitrigan’. Symbol-The royal Court with a royal throne.Attributes-The virtues and vices of the father’s family, wealth, glory, beauty, strength and prowess, luster and effulgence, superior qualities, sharpness of intellect, nobility, prestige, replenishment, and increase, wisdom, brilliance, capacity and willingness to donate, ancestors on the paternal side-all these are effected by Magha. In no star is the position of Lord Sun is so magnificent and dignified. Lord Sun in “Ashwini” is brilliant no doubt but the brilliancy of incendiary character. It burns everything about it. Lord Sun is then a terrible ball of fire. But in Magha, Lord Sun is like an emperor, confident and self-assured. If happy and pleased he is in a mood to make any benediction or gift. When Lord Sun is in Magha, Lord Sani gets alarmed and that is natural. For Sani is by character, of a mean disposition, the nature of a slave, no wonder that mean and lowly Sani cannot brook the beauty and the dignity of the position of Lord Sun in Magha. That is why Sani is “Neecha” and anti-meridian in Ashwini and meanness and wiliness of Sani increases. If Sani is the lord of 9th and 10th houses and is placed in the 4th house and associated with Magha he adversely influences the effects of the 4th and 10th houses. Magha is the cause of brightness and light. Therefore gloomy Grahas cannot stand it. Magha stands for noble impulses and incentives, the gift of Magha must always be a noble one. Magha has been described as glorious one. Those born in the star Makha are reserved, highly sexy, endowed with comforts and have wives who are also reserved. Knowledgeable, pure and sacrifice things. Those born in the Makha star are cruel, respect their fathers, sharp in reacting with others, non-sinners and destroy their enemies. They are harsh-spoken, hefty bodied, angry, transact with teachers and kings, interested in the advice of Devaguru and are bright. They tread the religious path and endowed with pleasant qualities; enjoyers and truthful. They are served by many servants, conduct big operations and are leaders of a big army. They are learned, long-lived, earn good money, obedient and help their relatives. They have bloodshot eye and possess fish sign on the chest. Those born in the first pada like to be alone, suffer from ear diseases, talk much, cruel, deceivers, hate others; and always sick. Poorvapalguni Nakshatra: Spread from 13:20’ to 26:40’ Simmam. Lord is Lord Sun, deity “Shivalinga”, Symbol-Swinging hammock. It is also called the Bhagadaivata Star. All the six majesties, pleasure and prosperity, love, Karma 2 Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar

Lord is Sukra, the deity is the Wind and because of this latter factor this causes the attributes of the wind. Restlessness of disposition or physical restlessness, inability to stay still at any place comes from it; also fidgetiness and noise. It is self-assured and asserting. The winds are the Lords of North-West. From these are derived the knowledge, the physical internal adjustments of the 5 Winds - Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana and Samana. Also from this comes the storms and the whirl-wind, the concrete disturbance of the atmosphere, A person born under this star is good at buying and selling, his wealth and property come and go quite easily. He is an independent sort of man, always striving for more independence. Asceticism is yet another attribute of this star. Diseases of the wind are to be treated in reference to this. Those born in the first pada are writers, witty people, pleasant faced, sexy and attracted by women. They are liked by all, interested in discussion of the scriptures and happy. In the next issue I will meet you all with the remaining set of nine stars. I pray Lord Shiva and Vanadurga to shower their entire blessings on all of us to have a trouble free and comfortable life. • 8. Karma 6 In Vedic astrology the planet Saturn is called SANI. In Sanskrit Sani comes from SANISCHARA, which means, “slow mover”. From Sani we get the word “shun”, which means to ignore, or lose awareness of something. Thus, Saturn represents a loss of awareness, or ignorance. This loss of awareness can also mean the diminishing awareness of the material world of manifestation. Here Saturn indicates the ascetic, rich with inner spirituality, and lost to this material plane of existence. Saturn is a malefic graha. He rules over the two signs, Capricorn and Aquarius. He is exalted in Libra, and fallen in the opposite sign of Aries. Saturn is a karaka, or indicator of longevity, misery, sorrow, old age and death, discipline, restriction, responsibility, delays, ambition, leadership and authority, humility, integrity, and wisdom born of experience. Saturn also indicates asceticism, denial, non-attachment, spirituality, hard work, organization, reality and time itself. Saturn’s most powerful place in the chart is in the 7th House and the Kendra’s, or Angles. He is a particularly beneficial planet for Taurus and Libra Ascendants. Saturn’s nature is Vata, or Airy. His gem is Blue Sapphire and all black stones and his metal is Lead. Saturn’s direction is west and his day is Saturday. He reaches full maturity at age 36. In Vedic myth Saturn is the son of the Lord Sun, born to his shadow wife, Chaya. Saturn is lame because one of the Sun’s first wife Sanjana’s children became angered with him and struck him in the foot. Thus Saturn walks with a limp, which accounts why he is the slowest of the Grahas. The graha SANISCHARA (Saturn), also known as Manda, is generally known to affect one adversely on occasions when he occupies certain positions in one’s horoscope like Saade Sati (7 1/2 years) Ashtama Sani (Saturn in 8th house - 2 1/2 years) etc. He is the Lord of Makaram and Kumbam. He is the slowest moving planet taking 2 1/2 years in each Rasi, completing one cycle every 30 years. A prayer to this Devata, especially on Saturdays, is said to mitigate the hardships one will have to face during these periods. Sanischara bestows all benefits to the devotees who pray sincerely to him. There is on individual shrine for Lord Sani in the entire USA. Hindu Temple of Ohio is the only Temple that has an individual shrine for Lord Sani (Saturn). Those who are having problems with 71/2 Saturn (Sade Sathi) or any other problems can come to this Temple, perform prescribed rituals, get the blessings of Lord Sani and get the best spiritual salvation for all kinds of problems. To know more and more about the specified ritual for Lord Sani, please contact the Chief Priest Srividhya Raviji @ 937-344-9221.Hindu Temple of Ohio. 2222, Olive Road, Dayton, Ohio.45426.
  • 9. Karma 7 Swamiji Sri. Selvam Siddhar is very fond and affectionate to children. His idea is if the children are well cultured, the entire society will be well. So, he use to tell short moral stories to the kids in all the satsangs. Here is some moral stories for children. The moral is not only for children but for all. Please God A sage observed seven dark women walking by his hermitage every morning and return clean and beautiful. He asked them who they were. They said, ‘We are the seven seas. When people come and wash their sins in our waters, we grow dark...There is a person who, when we go and circumambulate him, the sins wash away and we regain our true nature’. Curious, he enquired about that person endowed with such powers. They replied, ‘He is Pundalika, a boy famous for his devotion towards his parents. God visited that boy’s house, and Pundalika requested Him to stand on a couple of bricks till he finished doing ‘pada pooja’ to his parents. Pleased with the boy’s devotion, God manifested in the form of Panduranga. Pundalika ranks high as one of the four prime devotees of the Lord (Prahalada, Parasara, Narada, and Pundalika). Here is a devotee who did not neglect his worldly responsibilities and God placed him on a high pedestal. The path you have chosen to lead your life is not so important, as fulfilling the responsibilities associated with that path. How well you play your part in this drama of life decides how close you become to God. LOVING OR FEIGNING LOVE There is this story of a person who assumed that the world is permanent. A sage advised him of the transience of the world; that all relationships are false. But the man was not willing to believe what the hermit said. The sage told him, ‘I will give you a pill, eat it and you will be physically immobile for a day as if you are dead, but you will be conscious. Then you will understand the true nature of the world by the happenings around you.The man took the pill and feigned death. When the hermit reached the man’s house, the wife sobbed inconsolably, ‘O Sage! My husband has departed at such a young age’, to which the sage replied, ‘I can revive him, provided one of you sacrifice your life for his sake’. The man’s aged parents told the hermit, ‘We need to go on pilgrimages to Kasi and Rameswaram; we cannot give up our lives before that’. The children said, ‘Our mother will take care of us; it will compensate for our father’. The hermit told the wife, ‘You seem to be in much greater grief than the others. I can save your husband if you can give up your life for him’, to which the wife replied, ‘Even when this person was alive, he was frittering away his life under the influence of drinks. I will take care of the family’. The hermit said, ‘What is this? I am asking one of you to give up your life to save him; none of you seem to care for him’ to which the entire family chorused, ‘Swami! You do not have any relations in the world, nor do you have any wants. Why do not you sacrifice your life for him? We will construct a Samadhi for you and will worship you on your anniversary’, and the hermit fled! That is how the world is. Only ten percent of the world knows to love; the remaining 90% are busy flaunting love for getting their work done. They do not care if saints suffer from stomachache; their focus is ‘if the saint accepts what I offer, then it is good for me’and therefore they will thrust on the saints whatever they get from a cheaper store.
  • 10. Palakkai Pirattal This is yet another chettinad delicacy made out of baby jack fruit which will go very well with curd rice, Rasam Rice, Chappathi or Paratha. This is also a common item in a grand chettinad vegetarian lunch. Ingredients Baby jack fruit (cut into small pieces), Potato-1, Big onion-1, Tomato-1 To Grind Coconut grated-3 table spoons, Red chilli-5, Pottukadalai-1 table spoon Cashwes-4(optional), Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon To season Cinamon-2 small pieces, Cloves-2, Cardomom-2,Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon Procedure Peel off the skin from the baby jack fruit and cut as shown. Cut the potato also in the same size. Chop the onion and tomatoes also. In a small cooker or pressure pan cook the cut jack fruit and potatoes for 1 whistle in high flame. This will get cooked fast and will get smashed if over cooked. So if you are not sure when to switch off then cook it in microwave or in a kadai in such a way that the pieces are just correctly cooked. Grind the items given in ‘To grind’to a smooth paste. Now keep the kadai in the stove. In two tablespoons of oil season the curry with the items given in ‘To season’. Add the onions and tomatoes and saute nicely till oil separates. Now add the grinded masal and salt needed and sauté till it gets cooked well and oil separates in medium fire. Add ¼ cup of water to this and put the cooked baby jack fruit and potato pieces. Mix everything nicely in such a way that you don’t smash the pieces and cook in medium fire for 5 to 7 minutes till oil separates. HOLY COOKING / SPIRITUAL ( PRASADAM) FOOD ITEMS FOR THE GODS AND TEMPLES/ MANDIRS Poorana Kozhukattai (Vinayaga Chathurthi Special) When we were kids, the first thing that will come to our mind about Vinayakar Chathurthi is the sweet poorna kuzhakattai and sundal that will be made in all houses and distributed among the neighboring houses on that day. We used to compare the softness of the kozhukattai made in different houses. Though I love poorna kuzhakattai,I used to make modagam which is more favorite to vinayagar. But this year I wanted to share this recipe with my readers. Ingredients Raw rice -200 gms (1 uzhakku) (Here we get mavu pacharisi),Powdered jaggery-1/2 cup, grated coconut-1/2 cup,Cardomom-2,Ghee -2 teaspoon,Gingelly oil-1 tablespoon Method Soak the rice for an hour. Grind it well in a mixie. The batter can be watery. After grinding add 1/4 teaspoon salt and teaspoon gingelly oil into the batter. The batter can be like dosa batter. Keep a kadai in the stove. Boil 3/4 cup water and pour the ground batter into the water and stir nicely. The batter will turn like a ball in a minute or two. Switch off the stove. Divide the batter into three portions and knead it into a smooth ball. Make it into a single ball and cover it with a wet tissue or cloth. Now for the coconut poornam , Keep the kadai in the stove.pour 1/4 cup water. Add the jaggery into the water. Once the jaggerry dissolves, strain the jaggerry using a filter to remove impurities. Wash the kadai and pour back the jaggerry and boil till it turns sticky. In medium fire it can be boiled for 3 to 4 minutes. Now add the coconut, ghee and the powdered cardamom and stir well Karma 8 Aachi’s Samayal ( Cooking )
  • 11. Karma 9 till there is not much water content. Don’t keep the coconut for a long tome in the stove. Switch off with in two minutes else the coconut will get roasted. Now the poornam is ready. Now we have to make the kozhukattai and keep the poornam inside. In Tamilnadu lot of ready made achu (moulds) is available. But if you don’t have achu also no problem. The batter will listen to your needs. Make small balls. Spread it into flat thin circles or make small kinnams. Little bit gingili oil can also be used for spreading. Youngsters today will do a better work of making different shapes than us. Keep the poornam inside and cover nicely. If you make the first type stick the ends nicely. Steam the kozhukattai in idly pot or stand. Remember you have to put a cloth or tissue on the idly plate before steaming else the steam from below will change the color of the kozhukattai. Chakkarai pongal or Sarkkarai pongal (sweet Rice) This Rice is the queen of pongal. The idea of making this pongal on the first day of Thai month, was to make a sweet first out of the newly harvested rice. Now time has changed. Agriculture is no more the main occupation of many. But we continue to celebrate the function with some raw rice we get in the store. To our future generations we should try to explain the importance of this function to the farmer and the agriculturists In those days pongal was kept outside the house in the open for sun God. Now in our system of living we can’t do that and we have ended up in making pongal in the pressure cooker in our kitchen. Till today, I have managed to make pongal on the pongal day in the pongal panai in the dining room keeping the gas stove down .But in this method there is a risk of pongal getting burnt if we are not careful. So I advice the younger generation to make it in the cooker itself which is a safe and sure method Ingredients Raw rice-1 cup,Grated jaggerry-1 cup, Broken green gram- handful (pasiparuppu) Ghee 3 table spoons, Cashews-10, Raisins-handful, Powdered cardamom-1,teaspoon Procedure Wash the rice and pasiparuppu and cook in the pressure cooker with 3 cups of water in medium fire for 10 minutes. Meantime dissolve the jaggerry in a cup of water in the stove. Strain it using a stainless steel strainer .Keep it back in the stove and bring the mixture to a boil for 2 minutes. After the pressure goes open the cooker. Smash the rice nicely with a flat ladle. Slowly pour the jaggerry water into the cooker mixing well .Switch on the stove now and in low fire mix everything nicely. Switch off the stove in 2 minutes. Remember the pongal will solidify once it cools. If you want you can add little milk also instead of water while cooking rice. In a small frying pan, in a tablespoon of ghee fry the cashews after breaking it into small pieces in low fire. Add this also into the cooker. Fry the raisins also and along with that ghee add everything into the pongal. Add the cardamom powder and a tablespoon of ghee and mix well. Your pongal is ready. While serving you can use the remaining 1 tablespoon of ghee. Modagam This is the favorite sweet of Lord Ganesha or Pillayar as we call in Tamil. So this is commonly made in all houses in Tamilnadu during Vinayaga Chathurthi. This is different from Poorna Kuzhakkattai which is a sweet stuffed one. Modagam is made with broken rice like Rava and Jaggerry. One of my readers is urgently in need of this recipe, so no more time for stories. Ingredients Rice (broken like Rava)-2 cups,Jaggerry-2 cups,Water-6 cups (3 cups of water for 1 cup rice),Grated coconut-1/4 cup,Ghee-3 tablespoons Broken Green gram-1/4 cup (pasiparuppu), Cardomom-4 (powder it along with a teaspoon of sugar in the mixie) Procedure Wash the rice. Spread it under the fan for an hour in newspaper till the rice gets dried. Those who can’t dry can keep it in microwave for a minute. Put it in the mixie and powder it like rava. For making the modagam, first roast the rava in a tablespoon of ghee for 2 minutes. In a kadai pour 6 cups of water. Add the jaggerry. When the jaggerry water boils strain it using a steel strainer to remove the impurities. After straining pour back the jaggerry water into the kadai and when the water starts boiling add the broken rice and the green gram. Mix well. Add a table
  • 12. Karma 10 spoon of ghee. Keep the flame very low. Close the kadai. The rice will get cooked in 10 minutes. Open the kadai now and then mix. Once the rice appears to be cooked, add the grated coconut, powdered cardamom and one more table spoon of ghee. Switch of the stove. Allow it to cool for 5 minutes. Make small balls and steam it in idly pan for 8 minutes. Ma Vilakku or Mavu Vilakku (Rice flour Deepam) In Tamilnadu (I am not sure about other states), there is a practice of making Rice dough with jaggery and lighting a deepam for our favorite God or Goddesses on auspicious days like AAdi Velli , Purattasi Sani etc. In olden days sweet was a very rare item at home and children used to wait for this hand grinded dough (iditha maavu). Now those days have gone and making rice flour has become a difficult task. For the sake of youngsters who have seen their parents keeping maa vilakku regularly and want to continue it, here is the recipe. Ingredients Raw Rice (medium quality) – 200 gms (1 azhakku) Jaggery-200 gms (powdered 1 cup) while buying go for little bit white colored jiggery Cardomom-3 Ghee-2 table spoons Procedure Wash the rice nicely and soak for just 10 minutes. Now strain it and spread it on a newspaper under the fan. Let this dry for just 10 minutes (If it is dried more, you can’t make the flour. Now put all the rice in the big jar of the mixie and grind at a stretch for 2 minutes. Sieve the rice with the help of a medium holed sieve. Grind again till everything is done. Powder the jaggery nicely with a stone or slice it with the help of a knife. The next part is making the dough. Powder the cardamom along with a teaspoon of sugar in the small jar and take the powder alone. Add it to the rice flour. Slowly add the jiggery to the flour kept in a flat vessel and mix it with your hand. Initially you will feel Oh how am I going to make the dough. Don’t worry. Surely dough will turn perfect. If you find it difficult, keep aside the vessel closed for 5 minutes. Now the dough will be little loose. Add a teaspoon of Ghee and mix again till your dough is perfect. Excess jaggery will make the dough watery. In that case extra flour has to be added. I am sure you will not be short of jaggery if this measurement is followed. Don’t transfer it into the vessel in which you light deepam. Put it in a Zip lock bag and keep it in the vessel in which you want to light the deepam and take to the temple. Just before lighting transfer it into the vessel. Make the dough a round ball and keep inside the vessel. Press the centre of the dough with your thumb. Inside that hole pour half spoon ghee and light the lamp keeping the thread in the middle, Press one end of the thread inside the dough nicely so that the thread stands erect. Now light the lamp and get the blessings of Soolini Ma, and Vana Durga of Hindu Temple of Ohio.
  • 13. Karma11 Over the past issues we have discussed a few points about Spirituality as explained in the Upanishads, the Bhagavad- Gita, and the Ramayana. In this issue we will discuss the Spirituality found in Mahabharata. I whole heartedly thank the Almighty and my Swamiji for blessing me with more opportunities to express my ideas on Spirituality. The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana. The epic is part of the Hindu Itihasa, and forms an important part of Hindu Philosophy. It is of immense importance to the culture of the Indian Subcontinent, and is a major text in Hinduism. Its discussion of the human goals: Dharma (duty), Artha (purpose), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (liberation), takes place in a long- standing tradition, attempting to explain the relationship of the individual to society, the world and the workings of Karma. With more than 74,000 verses the Mahabharata is one of the longest epic poems in the world. It is about four times the size of the Ramayana. Including the Harivamsa, the Mahabharata has a total length of more than 90,000 verses. Besides its epic narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas and the Pandavas, the Mahabharata contains much philosophical and devotional material, such as the Shrimad Bhagavad-Gita, or a discussion of the four “goals of life,” (purusharthas). The later are enumerated as Dharma (right action), Artha (purpose), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (liberation). This great epic was dictated to Lord Ganesha by the great sage Veda Vyasa. Since Lord Ganesha cannot find the proper writing materials, he broke one of his tusks and wrote the epic on the hill called Meru. Among the principal works and stories that are a part of the Mahabharata, the following are very famous. This book is divided into eighteen “parvas” or books. The parvas are again subdivided into chapters. The last two chapters are called the Harivamsa and it tells about the life and death of Lord Krishna. Here I will describe the eighteen books. 1.Adi Parva The Book of the Beginning (The word “adi” means first) explains how the Mahabharata came to be narrated by Sauti to the assembled rishis at Naimisharanya. Vaishampayana recited the Mahabharata at the Sarpayaga, which was conducted by Janamejaya. (Vaishampayana is the other name of sage Veda Vyasa.) The history of the Bharata race is told in detail, and the book also traces history of the Bhrigu race - The birth and early life of the Kuru princes.
  • 14. Karma 12 2. Sabha Parva The Book of the Assembly Hall describes Maya Danava erecting the palace and court (sabha), at Indraprastha, the life at the court, Yudhishthira’s Rajasuya Yajna, the game of dice, and the eventual exile of the Pandavas. 3. Vana Parva (also Aranyaka-parva) The Book of the Forest covers the twelve years of exile in the forest (aranya). 4. Virata Parva The Book of Virata recounts the year in incognito spent at the court of Virata. 5. Udyoga Parva The Book of the Effort tells of the preparations for war and the efforts to bring about peace between the Kurus and the Pandavas which eventually fail (“udyoga” means effort or work). 6. Bhishma Parva The Book of Bhishma goes over the first part of the great battle, with Bhishma as the commander for the Kauravas and his fall on a bed of arrows. 7. Drona Parva In the Book of Drona, the battle continues, with Drona as commander. This is the major book of the war. Most of the great warriors on both sides are dead by the end of this book. 8. Karna Parva In the Book of Karna, the battle is narrated again, now with Karna as the commander. 9. Shalya Parva, means “The Book of Shalya.” Here is the description of the last day of battle, with Shalya as commander. Told in detail, is the pilgrimage of Balarama to the fords of the river Saraswati and the mace fight between Bheema and Duryodhana, which ends the war when Bheema kills Duryodhana by smashing him on the thighs with a mace. 10. Sauptika Parva (The Book of the Sleeping Warriors) Ashvattama, Kripa and Kritavarma kill the remaining Pandava army in their sleep. Only seven warriors remain on the Pandava side and three on the Kaurava side. 11. Stri Parva (The Book of the Women) Here, Gandhari, Kunti and the women (stri) of the Kurus and the Pandavas lament their dead. 12. Shanti Parva (“Shanti” means peace) The Book of Peace covers the crowning of Yudhisthira as king of Hastinapura, and the instructions from Bhishma for the newly anointed king on society, economics, and politics. This is the longest book of the Mahabharata. 13. Anushasana Parva The Book of the Instructions are the final instructions from Bhishma (“anushasana” means rules and regulations). 14. Ashvamedhika Parva The Book of the Horse Sacrifice is the royal ceremony of theAshvamedha (Horse Sacrifice) conducted by Yudhisthira. Also covered is the world conquest by Arjuna. And the Anugita (supplementary to Srimad Bhagavad-Gita) is told by Krishna to Arjuna. 15. Ashramavasika Parva (The Book of the Hermitage) In this book we have the eventual deaths of Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, and Kunti in a forest fire when they are living in a hermitage in the Himalayas. Vidura predeceases them and Sanjaya on Dhritarashtra’s bidding goes to live in the higher Himalayas. 16. Mausala Parva The Book of the Clubs describes the infighting between the Yadavas with maces (mausala) and the eventual destruction of theYadavas. 17. Mahaprasthanika Parva (The Book of the Great Journey) This is the great journey of Yudhisthira and his brothers across the whole country and finally their ascent of the great Himalayas where each Pandava falls except for Yudhisthira. 18. Svargarohana Parva (The Book of the Ascent to Heaven) Here is Yudhisthira’s final test, and the return of the Pandavas to the spiritual world (svarga). Out of these eighteen great books, the morality to be adopted by an individual is mostly taught. The rules and regulations told in these great books are applicable from the topmost to the bottommost in society. By adopting the rules, regulations, and morality of the Mahabharata, one can become a practical example to the entire world. The intellectual giants like Bishma, Drona, Yudishtira, and Lord Krishna showed the path that leads to a peaceful and spiritual life. They are the important rules and practical lessons for leading a calm, peaceful, and brave, spiritual life.
  • 16. Karma 14 In Book 6 (Bhishma Parva) of The Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna advises and teaches Arjuna when he is riddled with doubt. These teachings are not only meant for Arjuna but for one and all in the universe. The teachings match from the day of epics until today. It will also match well for the future also. As a great epic, the Mahabharata has put forth an enormous effort to cultivate spirituality and moralities into the regular lives of human beings. There is no spiritual partiality in the human race from emperor to the last citizen. The core story of the work is that of a dynastic struggle for the throne of Hastinapura, the kingdom ruled by the Kuru clan. The two collateral branches of the family that participate in the struggle are the Kaurava and the Pandava. Although the Kaurava is the senior branch of the family, Duryodhana, the eldest Kaurava, is younger than Yudhisthira, the eldest Pandava. Both Duryodhana and Yudhisthira claim to the first in line to inherit the throne. The struggle culminates in the great battle of Kurukshetra, in which the Pandavas are ultimately victorious. The battle produces complex conflicts of kinship and friendship, instances of family loyalty and duty taking precedence over what is right, as well as the converse. The Mahabharata itself ends with the death of Lord Krishna, and the subsequent end of his dynasty, and ascent of the Pandava brothers to heaven. It also marks the beginning of the Hindu age of Kali (Kali Yuga), the fourth and final age of mankind, where the great values and noble ideas have crumbled, and man is heading toward the complete dissolution of right action, morality and virtue. By reading and understanding the Mahabharata one can easily understand what humanity is and what all the essentialities of humanity are. By being the best human the Yudishtira has shown himself to be the best example for human beings. Even though he was hurt in many ways, he never backed away from his Dharma. That’s why he is remembered as Dharmaputra. He stands as an example of Dharma. He never cared for anything other than Dharma. The next is Bheema. He stands as an example for his dedicated devotion. For wherever he was, he used to worship Lord Shiva. He got a lot of boons from Lord Shiva. And even though he got lot of boons from Lord Shiva, he never misused them. The next is Arjuna. He had the closest relationship with Lord Krishna. Even though he had Lord Krishna’s closest relationship, he never misused it either. The next celebrity in the epic is Karna. He is the practical example of thankfulness and friendship. He even sacrificed his life for the sake of friendship and thankfulness. Just like the aforesaid, there are lots of examples in the entire epic. These are all on the positive side. The epic has plenty of examples on the negative sides as well. These examples are Duriyodana, Duchathana, Sakuni, and many more people. By looking at these people one can clearly understand how one should not behave in society. Out of these eighteen books the 1st to 5th explain the complete life of the prince, princess, kings and queens. The 6th book to 11th book talks about the battle. The 12th book tells about the peace.Thebooknumber13hasthestandardrulesandregulations formulated by the greatest scholar Bishma. By following these rules and regulations one can set a practical example to society, and one can be the best spiritual human being possible. The same book contains the “Vishnu Sahasranamam” (one thousand eight names of Lord Mahavishnu). Book 14 tells the duties of an emperor or a king. It also details the procedure of the greatest ritual, called Ashvamedha, conducted by Yudishtira. Book 15 details about the retired life of Drutarashtra and his wife. It also describes the last minutes of Drutharashtra, his wife, and Padava’s mother Kunti. Book 16 tells about the war between the Yadhavas. It is kind of a family feud. Because of this group infighting the Yadhava dynasty itself was ruined. Book 17 explains the journey of Pandavas across the whole country and it contains discussions of Yudishtira with the god of Dharma. It is considered one of the most important parts of the great epic. This section tells about the basic morality to be followed by normal mortal mankind. Book 18 is the ending of the great epic. It explains the results of Yudishtira and tells about the return of Pandavas to the spiritual world. One cannot become great by simply reading through the books of spirituality. However, if everybody tries to follow the basic moralities taught in the holy books; then, society will become great. There will be no struggles at all. The entire universe will be a “universe of peace.” As per the sayings of Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar, we all can have a very comfortable living. I thank the Almighty and Swamiji for giving me this opportunity to share my thoughts on spirituality. I pray that they continue to bless me with more and more chances to share my thoughts on spirituality. Om Shanti.

  • 22. Karma 20 The Monkey and the Crocodile Once upon a time, a clever monkey lived in a tree that bore juicy, red rose apples. He was very happy. One fine day, a crocodile swam up to that tree and told the monkey that he had traveled a long distance and was in search of food as he was very hungry. The kind monkey offered him a few rose apples. The crocodile enjoyed them very much and asked the monkey whether he could come again for some more fruit. The generous monkey happily agreed. The crocodile returned the next day. And the next. And the next one after that. Soon the two became very good friends. They discussed their lives, their friends and family, like all friends do. The crocodile told the monkey that he had a wife and that they lived on the other side of the river. So the kind monkey offered him some extra rose apples to take home to his wife. The crocodile’s wife loved the rose apples and made her husband promise to get her some every day. Meanwhile, the friendship between the monkey and the crocodile deepened as they spent more and more time together. The crocodile’s wife started getting jealous. She wanted to put an end to this friendship. So she pretended that she could not believe that her husband could be friends with a monkey. Her husband tried to convince her that he and the monkey shared a true friendship. The crocodile’s wife thought to herself that if the monkey lived on a diet of rose monkeys, his flesh would be very sweet. So she asked the crocodile to invite the monkey to their house. The crocodile was not happy about this. He tried to make the excuse that it would be difficult to get the monkey across the river. But his wife was determined to eat the monkey’s flesh. So she thought of a plan. One day, she pretended to be very ill and told the crocodile that the doctor said that she would only recover if she ate a monkey’s heart. If her husband wanted to save her life, he must bring her his friend’s heart. The crocodile was aghast. He was in a dilemma. On the one hand, he loved his friend. On the other, he could not possibly let his wife die. The crocodile’s wife threatened him saying that if he did not get her the monkey’s heart, she would surely die. So the crocodile went to the rose apple tree and invited the monkey to come home to meet his wife. He told the monkey that he could ride across the river on the crocodile’s back. The monkey happily agreed. As they reached the middle of the river, the crocodile began to sink. The frightened monkey asked him why he was doing that. The crocodile explained that he would have to kill the monkey to save his wife’s life. The clever monkey told him that he would gladly give up his heart to save the life of the crocodile’s wife, but he had left his heart behind in the rose apple tree. He asked the crocodile to make haste and turn back so that the monkey could go get his heart from the apple tree. The silly crocodile quickly swam back to the rose apple tree. The monkey scampered up the tree to safety. He told the crocodile to tell his wicked wife that she had married the biggest fool in the world. The Stork and the Crab Once upon a time, there was a stork that caught the fish in a particular tank. The stork always had a full meal. As the years went by, the stork grew older and weaker. His ability to catch fish diminished. At times he would even starve. He knew he had to do something to survive. One day he stood by the side of the tank with a very forlorn look on his face. The frogs, fish and crabs wondered why he was not trying to catch any food. A big crab asked him what the matter was. The stork answered that he was sad because all the fish in

The fish were very worried and asked the stork to help them. The stork offered to take all of them to a bigger tank some distance away. But he said that he needed to rest between trips because of his age. He would only be able to carry a few fish at a time. The stork took a beakful of fish on his first trip. He flew to a big rock and had a good meal. He rested awhile, and when he was hungry again, he took a second trip. In this manner, he took a trip each time that he was hungry. The big crab in the tank also wanted to save himself and he requested the stork to take him too. The stork thought it was a good idea to try a new dish. He agreed to take the crab on his next trip. After the stork flew up with him, the crab looked down to see what his new surrounding would be like. All he could see was dry land. He questioned the stork about this. The stork laughed wickedly and pointed to the rock below where the crab saw a heap of fish bones. The crab realized that he was to be the stork’s next meal. So the crab dug his claws into the stork’s neck and would not let go till the stork fell to the ground. The crab then cut off the stork’s head and returned home to show it to all the other fish and share the story of his adventure. Pundit Ji Sevaram One day a Brahmin by the name of Sevaram asked Birbal for help. He said that his forefathers were great Sanskrit scholars and that people used to respectfully refer to them as Panditji. He said that he had no money nor need for wealth; he was content living a simple life. But he had just one wish. He wished people would refer to him as Panditji too. He asked Birbal how he could achieve this. Birbal said that the task was fairly simple. If the Brahmin followed his advice word for word, this task could be achieved. Birbal advised the Brahmin to shout at anyone who would call him Panditji from now on. Now the children who lived on the same street as the Brahmin did not like him since he scolded them often. They were just waiting for an opportunity to get back at him. Birbal told the children that the Brahmin would get really irritated if they would start calling him Panditji. The children started calling him Panditji and the Brahmin as advised by Birbal started shouting at them. The children spread the word to all the other children in the neighborhood that Sevaram hated being called Panditji, so they in turn all started calling him Panditji. After a while, Sevaram got tired of scolding them but everyone already was used to call him Panditji. Hence the game was over but the name stuck. The Three Questions King Akbar was very fond of Birbal. This made a certain courtier very jealous. Now this courtier always wanted to be chief minister, but this was not possible as Birbal filled that position. One day Akbar praised Birbal in front of the courtier. This made the courtier very angry and he said that the king praised Birbal unjustly and if Birbal could answer three of his questions, he would accept the fact that Birbal was intelligent. Akbar always wanted to test Birbals wit readily agreed. The three questions were 1. How many stars are there in the sky? 2. Where is the centre of the Earth? 3. How many men and how many women are there in the world? Immediately Akbar asked Birbal the three questions and informed him that if he could not answer them, he would have to resign as chief minister. To answer the first question, Birbal brought a hairy sheep and said there are as many stars in the sky as there is hair on the sheep’s body. My friend the courtier is welcome to count them if he likes. To answer the second question, Birbal drew a couple of lines on the floor and bore an iron rod in it and said, this is the centre of the Earth, the courtier may measure it himself if he has any doubts. In answer to the third question, Birbal said Counting the exact number of men and women in the world would be a problem as there are some specimens like our courtier friend here who cannot easily be classified as either. Therefore if all people like him are killed, then and only then can one count the exact number. The Golden Goose Once upon a time there lived a queen in the city of Benaras. Her name was Khema and she was the wife of King Bahuputraka, which means ‘father of many sons’. One night, the Queen had a dream of a beautiful golden goose that spoke with great wisdom, almost as if he was a sage. She told her husband that
  • 24. Karma 22 she desperately wanted to see a bird just like the one that she had seen in her dream. So the King asked his ministers to find out all that they could about a bird such as this. He was told that such a bird did exist but was extremely rare and difficult to find. They advised him to build a beautiful lake on the outskirts of Benaras so that he may attract such rare and lovely creatures to reside there. In this way the queen might have her wish. Towards the north, on Mount Cittakuta, there lived about ninety thousand wild geese headed by a beautiful golden goose called King Dhatarattha. He got to hear of this exquisite lake that was surrounded by flowers and trees and had lovely water lilies and lotuses floating on the surface. The king had named this lake after his wife Khema and had invited all the birds to come and live on it, promising that none of them would ever be harmed. Corn was scattered on a daily basis in order to attract the birds. So a couple of geese went up to their King and told him that they were quite tired of living up on the mountains and would like to see this wonderful lake where they had been promised food and protection. The king agreed to their request and took the whole flock down south towards Benaras. Meanwhile, at the lake the King had placed hunters all around in order to capture any golden goose that happened to pass by. So the next morning when the headhunter saw this flock of geese approaching he was very excited to see their golden leader. He immediately went about setting up a snare amongst the water lilies and lotuses, as he knew that the leader would definitely be the first to alight. The whole flock came flying down in one mighty swoop and as expected it was the King’s foot that touched the water first. He was ensnared and could not escape. Seeing this the other geese flew into a panic and honked in distress. But none had the courage to try to free their king and so flew back to Mount Cittacuta for safety. All except one. He was the chief captain, Sumukha. His King entreated him to fly to safety too, as he would surely be captured if he stayed by his side. But Sumukha replied that he would never desert his master in the face of danger and would either try to save him or die by his side. At this point the head huntsman approached and as Sumukha saw him he decided to appeal to his compassion. The hunter asked the King how come he had not noticed the trap that was set. The golden goose replied that when one’s time was up it was no use to struggle against what was fated and one must just accept it. The huntsman was very impressed with his grace and wisdom. He then turned to Sumukha and asked why he had not fled with the other birds even though he was free to do so. Sumukha answered that this was his King, best friend and master and that he could never desert him even at the cost of his own life. Hearing this the hunter realized that these were a couple of rare birds of great nobility. And were he to harm them, the gods would certainly punish him. Besides, he did not much care for his own King’s reward and decided to do the right thing and set them free. He told Sumukha that as he was ready to die for his King he would set them both free to fly wherever they may. He then set loose the foot of the golden goose and washed the wound clean. And when he made an attempt to fix the dislocated muscle “lo behold”.. the foot was miraculously whole again as if it had never been hurt. Sumukha greatly blessed the hunter for his act of compassion and his King asked whether he had set the trap for himself or at someone else’s command. The hunter answered that he had done it on the orders of his own King. He then went on to narrate to them the whole story about the queen’s dream and her wish to see this rare golden goose. On hearing this, the golden goose decided to go and meet the monarch, as he knew that the hunter would receive his reward. He had also heard about the wisdom and goodness of King Bahuputakka and thought that if he appeared out of his own free will, the monarch might allow him and his flock to come visit the lake. He therefore asked the hunter to take him to his King. The hunter advised him against it because he was worried that his monarch might imprison these two lovely creatures. But the golden goose explained that just as they had been able to soften a hunter’s heart it should not be too difficult to do the same to a great and noble King. He asked him to do his duty and leave the rest to him. So the hunter set out to go to the palace accompanied by these two noble, gorgeous creatures. Needless to say that the King and Queen were absolutely delighted to see these two beautiful birds. The King set them on a golden perch and fed them himself, with honey, grain and sweetened milk. Then he spent the whole night discussing kingship and all its duties with this King of Geese. The golden goose did his best to offer good advice and encouragement in accordance with his wisdom. InthemorninghethankedtheKingandQueenfortheirhospitality and friendship and flew back to his flock accompanied by his faithful friend and chief captain Sumukha.

  • 27. Karma 25 Our Vedic system recognizes 27 Nakshatra or constellation. (Sometimes 28, if we include Abhijit Nakshatra which is an integral part of Ultarashada). The Nakshatra system is unique to the Vedic system and gives it much higher level of accuracy. It is believed that the Nakshatra systemwasprevalentbeforethesignsystemwasevenrecognized. Each planet, house, sensitive point in zodiac is influenced by the Nakshatra it occupies at a particular time. We are describing the results of placement of Moon in each Nakshatra (since this is the most important tool in Vedic astrology). The results of your Moon in the Nakshatra (since this is the most important tool in vedic astrology).Your birth Nakshatra (Janma Nakshatra) determines your thinking patter, nature as well as basic destiny. It also determines the instincts as well as the subconscious aspects of the personality Various House in the Atharava Vedic Astrogy According to older Hindu texts, the words signs and houses fall on each other, but the count of the signs is always made from Aries which is the first sign. If we say a planet is in the first sign, it means that he is in Aries. If we say, it is in the fifth sign, it will be in Leo. If we say, it is in the twelfth sign, it will be in Pisces because Pisces is the last and the twelfth sign. We must remember that when referring to a sign we always count Aries as the first and then proceed in the regular order of the signs. But a house begins from the ascendant. We must first know which is the sign ascending at the particular moment at a particular place. The Earth is globular. It is like a globe with the sky all around. There is no part of the sky which is not to the east of any locality of the Earth. We can explain this further by giving a practical example. The Sun always appears to be somewhere on the ecliptic. In fact, he is not on the ecliptic; it is the Earth which is on the ecliptic and as viewed from the Earth, the Sun appears to be in line with some place on the ecliptic. Now this Sun at any time appears in the east, in some part or the other of the Earth. So we may state that as the zodiac is a circular ring in the skies, though in fact it is elliptic, going all round, some part of the ring, i.e., the zodiac is on the eastern horizon somewhere. Now suppose that at a particular time the sign Leo is rising at the eastern horizon. Then Leo will constitute the first house Virgo ( By His Holiness, Param Pujya Maharishi Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar )
  • 28. Karma 26 the second house, Libra the third house, Scorpio the fourth house, Sagittarius the fifth house, Capricorn the sixth house Aquarius the seventh house, Pisces the eighth house, Aries the ninth house, Taurus the tenth house, Gemini the Eleventh house and Cancer the twelfth house. Now suppose that the Sun is n Aquarius. So we say the Sun is in the seventh house or setting in the western horizon. If suppose Scorpio was rising at New Delhi. Then Scorpio will be the first house, Sagittarius the second house. Capricorn the third house and so on; and the Sun being in Aquarius he will be in the fourth house. The following signs being in opposition at 180º, to each other are called opposition signs: •Aries is in opposition to Libra and Libra to Aries •Taurus is in opposition to Scorpio and Scorpio to Taurus •Gemini is in opposition to Sagittarius and Sagittarius to Gemini •Cancer is in opposition to Capricorn and Capricorn to Cancer •Leo is in opposition to Aquarius and Aquarius in Leo •Virgo is in opposition to Pisces and Pisces to Virgo So we must remember that the sign rising to the east at a particular time depends upon the time, date, month, year and the longitude and latitude of the place. The latitude is very important because the duration of a sign rising differs from latitude to latitude.
