1. Samsung Targets Consumers with Lower Cost Galaxy Express
By Lauren Triolo
Those seeking the functionality of Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone at a fraction of the price are in
luck.
Samsung Electronics announced in late January that the company is planning the international
release of the Galaxy Express, the value-driven younger sister of the monstrously popular
Samsung Galaxy S3. With the lower price tag, tech industry insiders believe Samsung will
expand its technology to new markets and more users.
In a press release, the South Korean tech leader promises “great performance, connectivity, easy
usability and a superior battery to enhance life’s everyday pleasures.” The specs of the 4G LTE
smartphone include:
4.5 inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display
1.2GHz dual-core processor
1GB RAM
8GB internal memory, with optional extended storage of up to 32GB using microSD
cards (for a total 40GB of storage)
Bluetooth 4.0
4.8 oz in weight
Primed to run on the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, the new smartphone device is
fitted with a suite of Google apps, including Google Play Store, Google Plus, Google Talk and
Google Maps.
The Galaxy Express also has a 5 megapixel, auto focus rear-facing camera with LED flash and a
1.3 megapixel front-facing camera.
International Access
Rumor has it that the Galaxy Express will be used all over the world; the Global mobile
Suppliers Association believes that the Galaxy Express will be purchased by consumers in 55
countries. The phone will be able to access LTE networks in four spectrum bands, including the
most popular 1800MHz, which is used in Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Africa, South
Korea and the United Kingdom.
It will also be able to access LTE networks in the 800MHz, 900MHz and 2600MHz frequency
bands.
The Galaxy Express will include the Samsung-specific AllShare Play functionality, which
enables device-to-device sharing of videos, photos and music. Using AllShare Play, users can
push content from mobile phones to a Smart TV or Samsung laptop, as long as the devices are
2. connected to the Internet. Users can also store content on the web and access it at any time via a
connected Samsung device.
Samsung Galaxy Express vs. Samsung Galaxy S3
The Samsung Galaxy S3 was one of last year’s best-selling smartphones. CNET.com named it
the best gadget of the year and PC Magazine selected it as “Best Phone of 2012.” Reports are
circulating that its successor, the Galaxy S4, is set to hit shelves soon.
AT&T released the Galaxy Express in the United States late last year and is currently selling it
for $99. CNET.com reviewed the phone in December 2012 and said the “solid performance and
respectable specs are a good deal,” giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars, but warned consumers wanting a
more powerful camera to “pass it up.” In comparison, the CNET editors gave the Galaxy S3 a
solid 4 stars, calling it an “excellent, top-end phone.”
