- This training event – is part of a series of events on sustainable design and construction for Local Authority planners, designers and architects, in Hampshire - a programme developed by HIPOG Sustainable Design Sub-group, with tEC (the Environment Centre, Southampton) and delivered as part of the SISCo project. SISCo stands for “Solutions for Implementing Sustainable Construction” and is an EU funded programme, lead by tEC. In brief SISCo is about ( you can say you don’t know much about this ): As well as delivering the training programme the aims of SISCo are: Collect examples of best practice in sustainable construction – some examples already on to tEC website To provide an online “Sustainable Planning and Purchasing Centre” where up to date and relevant information on sustainable construction and development can be accessed – where training programmes advertised and examples of best practice shown To work with UK and EU partners to drive improvements in policy and implementation of sustainable development To learn from EU partners’ tools and processes and to share UK learning with them More information at www.environmentcentre.com/SISCo or talk to the Project Manger Laura Savillewood – who is here (you can point to her)
- This series of events is a 2 nd phase of events delivered through the SISCo project, by tEC, working with the HIPOG Sustainable Design Sub-group. The first series delivered in 2009. The outline programme was approved by HIPOG and refined by a detailed questionnaire. There will be approx. 6 half-day events. There was one on: the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM Assessments held on 29 th November in Eastleigh BC Sustainable Drainage Systems, on 12 th Jan. at East Hants DC Carbon Reduction, 2 nd Feb at Rushmoor BC Offices 2. This event today on Biodiversity, 9 th Feb. tEC and HIPOG have worked closely with the County Ecologists to develop programme 3. Future events on: Sustainable Infrastructure – focus on Green and Highways Infrastructure Sustainable Waste and Materials Management
- Biodiversity is a significant consideration for Winchester District: River Itchen Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Upper Hamble Special Protection Area (SPA) and Ramsar Site 20 SSSIs incl. St. Catherine’s Hill, Crab Wood, Botley Wood Nearly 600 SINCs - 369 woodland, 170 grassland, 4 heath, 17 wetland 2 NNRs - Beacon Hill and Old Winchester Hill Pressure on biodiversity is still increasing (development and human activity) – we need to do more than just protect what remains Opportunities arise with Strategic Sites – potential for significant biodiversity benefits to offset adverse impacts Green Infrastructure - capacity to deliver benefits for biodiversity – buffers, improved linkages and networks Protecting and enhancing biodiversity should be seen as integral to securing better living spaces for people
- A bit about the speakers: Paul Stewart, is an Associate at Mayer Brown Limited. “ Paul is a consultant civil engineer working for Mayer Brown Ltd in Woking. He is a lead designer of infrastructure works to support new residential, retail and commercial developments. Paul has been working on projects incorporating SuDS for 10 years and is best known locally for his involvement in the proposed Newlands development of 2,550 dwellings at West of Waterlooville MDA, which he has been involved with since 2004.” Simon Bunn, is a Drainage Engineer at Cambridgeshire City Council
