- I am very pleased to be here today at the CBI Climate Change summit to have the opportunity to talk to you about ways to reduce the carbon emissions of your IT operations. Sun have pursued a green agenda for many years, and are recognised a leaders in our industry. Our Corporate Sustainability Unit is represented on the board and works closely with Workplace Resources to ensure that eco-efficiency remains at the forefront of all that we do, from the products we design and build to how we conduct our operations. At Sun we have wide ranging initiatives from greening our datacenters (I'll talk about in a moment) to continuing to consolidate real estate while offering employees more flexible working, making the buildings we keep more efficient. Last year alone this resulted in reducing our GHG emissions (20% in the US last year and 20% globally by 2012), reducing electricity and natural gas consumption (reduced both by 7.5% last year) And our actions, such as developing a more diverse supply chain or requiring ISO 14001 certification for environmental management from our manufacturing partners, ensure that we choose suppliers whose standards and values match our own. ISO 14000 is a series of international standards on environmental management. It provides a framework for the development of an environmental management system and the supporting audit programme. However, for the purposes of this presentation I will focus on computing and how organisations can go about reducing the carbon emissions of their IT operations while delivering significant benefits back to the business.
