Alappuzha
• Alappuzha, known as the Venice of The East, is a District of immense natural beauty in Kerala.
It is an important Backwater Tourist Centre, attracting several thousands of foreign tourists
each year. It is also famous for boat races, houseboat holidays, beaches, marine products and
coir products.
• The nearest airport is Cochin, which is 95 Kms away. Alleppey is well connected by rail from all
major places in India.
• The main key attractions are Pathiramanal, Alleppey Beach, Krishnapuram Palace and Boat
Race.

Bekal
• Bekal a small region of striking beauty and is located on the shoreline of Pallikara village in the
district of Kasargod in Kerala.

Alappuzha Beach

Arthungal Perunnal
• The feast of the St. Sebastian, popular as the Arthunkal Perunnal is a 10-day festival,
which usually is held in the month of January every year.
• The highlight of this festival is the ritual on the final day, when devotees crawl on their
knees all the way from the nearby beach to the church. This is then followed by a
ceremonial procession to the beach.

Attuvela Mahotsavam
• The Attuvela Mahotsavam is a water carnival. A procession of canoes carrying a huge
replica of the temple. The Goddess Bhagavathy is the presiding deity in this small temple.
• Attuvela has a beautifully illuminated canoes, carrying a huge replica of the temple, glide
down the waters accompanied by hordes of colourfully decorated small canoes and
temple percussion music.

Chettikulangara Bharani
• The annual festival held in the Malyalam month of Kumbham is one of the most well-
known festivals of Kerala. The festival and the temple are dedicated to Goddess
Bhagavathy.
• Almost all the folk arts of South Kerala are presented at the temple. The all-night
Kathakali performances are a must-see for Kathakali buffs.

Malanada Kettukazcha
• Malanada Kettukazcha is associated with the Poruvazhy Malanada temple. This temple
interestingly is dedicated to Duryodhana, the antagonist in the Indian epic -
Mahabharata.
• The annual festival of this temple is noted for the magnificent kettukazcha procession.
These structures are made in a competitive spirit by the local people. The event attracts
a large number of devotees every year.

Nehru Boat Race
• The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is the greatest event on the backwaters of Kerala. The race
is held on the second Saturday of August every year. Magnificent snakeboats compete
for the prized trophy instituted by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
• Apart from the races of chundanvalloms (snakeboats) and of smaller country crafts, the
event offers many fascinating sights such as ceremonial water processions, spectacular
floats and decorated boats.

Onam
• Onam is the biggest festival celebrated in Kerala. Onam Festival falls during the Malayali
month of Chingam (August - September) and marks the homecoming of legendary King
Mahabali.
• Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings out the best of Kerala culture and
tradition. Intricately decorated Pookalam, ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat
Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable features of Onam -
the harvest festival in Kerala.

Pulikali
• Pulikali is a popular folk art performed during the Onam season. In Pulikali a group of
performers paint their whole body in the likeness of tigers and wear tiger mask. The
theme of the play is tiger hunting.
• It is a mixture of resorting to traditional folk dance steps and also improvisations.

Koodalmanikyam Festival
• Koodalmanikyam temple is dedicated to Lord Bharatha, the brother of Lord Rama in the
epic Ramayana. It is perhaps the only temple in India with Bharatha as the presiding
deity.
• The colourful eleven-day annual festival at the Koodalmanikyam temple is noted for the
grand elephant pageantry. The festival falls in during April or May.

Kottiyoor Festival
• Kottiyoor is a famous Hindu pilgrim center devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Kottiyoor temple is located near Kelakam in Kannur district of the southern state Kerala.
Sri Kottiyoor temple is also known as the “Dakshina Kashi” and attracts lakhs of devotees
every year.
• There is no formal structure of a temple as such. Neyyattam ritual on the first day and
the Thirukalasattu ritual on the concluding day are sttended by hundreds of devotees.
The Akkare Kottiyoor temple remains open only on the festival days.

Thaipooyam Mahotsavam, Koorkancherry
• Thaipooyam festival is celebrated at the Koorkancherry Sree Maheswara Temple, in the
name of Lord Subramanian; the son of Lord Shiva the presiding deity of this temple.
• The main attraction is Kavadiyattom .This is a ritual dance that starts in the morning by
forming groups that are known as ambalakkavadi and pookkavadi. The dance is again
performed at night and continues till dawn. The conclusion of the festival is marked by a
scintillating display of fireworks.

Thirunakkara Arattu
• The annual 10-day festival at the Thirunakkara Temple draws to a close with the Arattu
ceremony. Usually nine caparisoned elephants take part in the Arattu procession which
begins in the afternoon.
• On this day, Folk arts like Mayilattom (peacock dance), Velakali etc, are presented in the
temple compound in the evening. A major attraction is the all-night Kathakali
performances on the third and fourth days of the festival.

Thrissur Pooram
• The Thrissur Pooram is one of the most spectacular festivals in the world. In terms of
visual splendor, the grand assembly of aparisoned elephants, amazing pyrotechnic
displays, spellbinding ensembles of percussion instruments and enthusiastic crowds,
there is no match for it.
• The Thrissur Pooram is considered to be the Mother of all Poorams, a culture highlight
that towers above all other festivals .Thrissur pooram is a festival unique in its pageantry,
magnitude and participation.
