3. Grendel Spawn of the “She-Wolf”. Terrorized the people of Hrothgar’s kingdom. He hated the happiness of that the kingdom had while he was living in the Moor never knowing the love of anyone. He would sneak into the hall of Herot and devour men while they slept.
4. Hrothgar King of the Dutch and builder of the hall of Herot. His lands were being terrorized by the monster Grendel. Closes down the hall so that no man shall become another victim.
6. Important points Grendel comes to terrorize the hall Herot. Hrothgar’s people live in fear of Grendel and are afraid to leave to house’s at night. Grendel freely roams to lands unopposed. The story of Hrothgar’s problem reaches distant lands and help soon comes.
7. The point to this section was to give to reader a setting, Hrothgar’s kingdom, and a conflict, the struggle with Grendel and having to close the hall of Hrot. This section has many Anglo-Saxon values and principles because they had just moved to a new lands and there were many spices of animals that they had never seen before. They did not know how to explain what they were, so they came up with stories to explain the fear that they have with dealing with these new threats.

9. Beowulf hears of Hrothgar’s problem and takes 14 of his best soldiers with him to fight Grendel.
10. When Beowulf arrives on the shore of Hrothgar’s kingdom he is meet by a man upon a ridge that asks him what his intentions are in these lands.

After Beowulf tells him his intentions he leads his king and the king is skeptical that this mere mortal would be able to end Grendel’s torment upon his lands.Section Summary Once Beowulf hears of Hrothgar’s monster problem he sails to Herot to tell the king what he is going to do for him. 13. Grendel, as expected, comes to the hall sensing that he is going to be getting a free meal sneaks in and devours the first Geat, but when he moves to the next body on the floor he is immediately seized by the wrist.

After a long intense battle Beowulf rips Grendel’s shoulder off and mounts it in the hall as a trophy of his victory.Section Summary After Beowulf gets the kings blessing to fight the monster Grendel he waits that night for the monster to appear. After Grendel appears and starts eating the soldiers Beowulf seizes Grendel and at the end of the fight Grendel slinks off to the Moors to die while Beowulf hangs his arm from the mantle in the hall. Beowulf decides that he is going to go to the Moor to slay the She-Wolf.Section Summary In this section Beowulf learns that Grendel’s monstrous mother also lives in the but rarely leaves the swamp, but when she does she is spotted by some of the villagers and this is reported to Beowulf.
