3. EQUINE ATHLETES
Getting your equine athlete
back on Track
Muscle and tendon strains, joint sprains and wounds are common injuries in equine athletes. Equine tissue like
human tissue is highly vulnerable to repetitive stress and can be career limiting for the athlete if not treated
properly the first time. Equine veterinarians across North America have discovered a medical technology that
heals injuries on a cellular level, safely and effectively, without any discomfort to the animal. This new medical
technology is known as the Theralase line of therapeutic medical laser systems.
The Theralase superpulsed laser system can penetrate up to 4 inches into tissue through all the hair and skin
of an equine athlete to promote cellular regeneration at the source of the injury. Laser energy helps to repair
damaged cells by accelerating several of the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Depending on the severity of
the injury, the equine athlete can return to competition usually within a few weeks instead of many months of
stall rest. This means that your equine athlete can be back to competing in a fraction of the time.

Dual wavelength TECHNOLOGY
Theralase combines 660 nm visible red and 905 nm near infrared superpulsed lasers to allow superficial and
deep penetration of laser energy of up to 4” into tissue activating all three known cellular pathways.
True Laser Diodes Versus LEDs
True lasers are highly directional delivering 100% of the photons to the affected area versus only 5 to 6% with
a LED; hence, much better treatment outcomes occur with true lasers versus LEDs.
Laser - 100% of light energy in the forward direction LED - 5 to 6 % of light energy in the forward direction

Shorter Treatment Times
The Theralase Multiple Probe utilizes 9 Lasers and is able to treat an area of 20cm2 thus reducing treatment
times by 90% in comparison to a single laser probe.

5. THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE PRODUCT
theralase is the only laser on the
market known to activate all
three cellular pathways
660 nm - Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) Pathway:
Healing Inner
Membrane
Theralase stimulates the mitochondria of the cell to produce more Outer
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP or basic cell energy) to accelerate Membrane
tissue repair. (Proceedings of the National Academy of Science 2003)
Cells that lack energy are unable to participate in the healing process. Laser
energy is delivered to injured cells, which are able to absorb the light and Cristae
convert it into chemical energy, which is then used to accelerate tissue repair. Matrix
Once cells are fully energized they are able to stimulate each other to rebuild
and heal the injured area.
905 nm - Nitric Oxide (NO) Pathway: Inflammation
Independent research proves that the proprietary Theralase 905nm
superpulsed laser technology increases the production of NO by over
700%, increasing vasodilation and decreasing inflammation versus
other competitive wavelengths. (Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2009).
When tissue injury occurs, the inflammatory process is initiated to immobilize
the area and prevent further damage to our body. This process is usually
associated with pain caused by inflammation exerting pressure on nerve
endings. In order to decrease inflammation in the particular region, the body
produces Nitric Oxide (NO). Nitric Oxide has been proven to relax the
vascular network, dilate the capillaries, improve vascular function, protect
against cell injury and help rebalance the immune response. This process
not only reduces inflammation but brings much needed oxygen and other
metabolites to the injured tissue aiding in their natural healing.
905 nm - Lipid Absorption Pathway: Pain
Extracellular fluid with high concentration
Theralase laser technology effectively removes the pain signal at of Na+
source by rebalancing the sodium potassium pathway. (Harvard Medical
School 2010)
Cell membrane
Na+K+ Na+ Na+
Na+
Neurons use electrical and chemical signals to transmit information. The
transmission of pain is primarily due to an expulsion of sodium ions (Na+)
and an influx of potassium (K+) ions into the nerve cell across the cellular ATP
membrane, altering the electrical potential difference of the nerve cell. The
peak absorption of lipids occurs in the near infrared wavelength range of 905 K+Na+ ADP
nm to 910 nm. Since the cellular membrane is a bilipid membrane, laser light
in the 905 nm range increases the porosity of the cellular membrane. This
increased cellular membrane porosity allows the reabsorption of sodium ions Intracellular fluid with low
concentration of Na+ and
and the expulsion of potassium ions across the membrane rebalancing the high concentration of K+
sodium-potassium pump and removing the pain signal at source.

8. BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT...
HERE’S WHAT equine experts ARE
SAYING ABOUT THERALASE
TERRY RUCH, DVM
Barrie Equine Clinic, Innisfil, Ontario
“The Theralase is able to increase efficacy, provide superior clinical outcomes and allow for faster return to
competition for many equine athletes. The Theralase works extremely well at reducing pain and inflammation,
working on numerous soft tissue injuries, such as: muscles, tendons and ligaments”
BLAIR BURGESS
Winner of the Hambletonian (2006) and The Little Brown Jug (2007), Campbellville, Ontario
On Royal Decree, a 2 yr old trotting colt: “I definitely noticed decreased inflammation in a shorter amount of
time. All my other treatment protocols had been followed as per usual and we had never seen healing at that
speed before”.
JACK MOISEYEV
Standardbred Driver, Moffat, Ontario
“I drove Raising Rhonda one week prior to her laser treatments and she locked on the left line and finished
seven wide in the stretch. Next week after 4 laser treatments, I saw a dramatic difference in her steering as she
drove straight as an arrow and finished second”.
RICK ZERON
Winner of the 2010 O’Brien Award For Horsemanship, Oakville, Ontario
“If you’re not using the Theralase cold laser, then you’re not winning!”

9. CLINICAL PROOF
over 3,000 clinical studies worldwide
have proven the effectiveness
of laser therapy
A Study of the Effects of Lasering on Chronic Bowed Tendons at
Wheatley Hall Farm Limited, Canada
McKibbon and Paraschak, Lasers Surg Med, March 1983
42 standardbred horses with chronic bowed tendon injuries received a single treatment with infrared 904 nm
laser and were then evaluated for final race times, last quarter race times and class changes. A significant
percent of these horses showed either similar or improved times and classes.
Conclusion: Lasering bowed tendons presents a safe and inexpensive alternative to traditional treatment
methods which often require stall rest of up to 1 year.
Use of Laser Light to treat Certain Lesions in Standardbreds
McKibbon and Paraschak, Modern Veterinary Practice, March 1984
35 Horses with check ligament injuries, 8 horses with plantar desmitis and 30 horses with pharyngeal lymphoid
hyperplasia were treated using a 904 nm low level laser. The final and last quarter race times were analyzed
before and after treatment. The results were significant with 60-90% of horses showing similar or faster race
times and an ability to race in similar or higher classes after treatment.
Conclusion: Treatment of a variety of neuromuscular skeletal conditions using a 904 nm laser showed
significantly positive results
Treatment of Chronic Back pain in horses : stimulation of Acupuncture
points with a low powered infrAred laser
Martin and Kilde, Veterinary Surgery, June 2008.
Fourteen horses could not perform at expected standards due to chronic back pain of 4 to 48 months in duration.
They did not obtain lasting improvement from other forms of therapy. They were treated by stimulating 9
acupuncture points using a low powered infrared laser (905 nm). After completing 11 treatments, performed
weekly, pain was alleviated in 10 of the 14 horses. Of the ten horses who were training and competing, 4 went
on to win. One year after treatment was discontinued, 9 of the 10 horses were performing at an acceptable
standard for their owner .
Conclusion: Chronic back pain can be treated using laser acupuncture to achieve positive results both in the
immediate and long term.
