Locations – Use Conventions
Within the research the Indie
genre, especially Bombay Bicycle
Club used sub urban
locations, including housing
estates. I have incorporated this
convention within the video by
having the character leave his

Within the Shuffle video of Bombay

Costumes – Use / Develop Conventions
We have used similar clothing
to the videos within the genre.
Within the video there is no
clothing that is striking that
would challenge the
conventions.

The Converse shoes are an iconic
convention of the Indie genre and
we wanted to develop this
convention of footwear to
connote a worn out, old vintage
feel to help create the theme of
the video. So we therefore
featured the shoes in a variety of
close ups throughout the video to

4. The Video
Narrative – Develops Conventions
In several videos of the Indie genre, the
band would be apart and then come
together to play to the song. The
Evening/Morning is an example of this the
main character is running from men and
then joins his band. We found it interesting
how the singer found the band in the street
and started to play to the song. We
therefore had the idea of the band
members being in the street busking and
then they would join together at the end of
the video which would develop the

5. The Video
Colour Grading – Uses Conventions
The Indie genre, mostly Bombay Bicycle Club have very
de saturated looking videos. With sometimes a colour
grading which will give the video a warm or cold feel for
example. I added a warm colour grading as well as
reducing the saturation of the original clips which makes
the video use the conventions of the Indie music videos
further.

Performance – Challenges Conventions
Bombay Bicycle Club – Always Like This
As the narrative of our video has the band members as buskers, they perform separately on instruments
typically used by buskers, such as an acoustic guitar and street drums. Unlike conventional videos of the
genre, which feature the band playing as one or the main singer of the band on his own.

7. The Digipak
Paper Texture – Develops Conventions
Bombay Bicycle Club have an
image that reflects a rural, retro,
vintage feel, especially as their
albums have progressed. The
Flaws single artwork has this
feel to it and we have
developed this convention by
making the image more intense
by using an explicit paper
texture that reflects an old
vintage, rural feel even more
than previous Bombay Bicycle
Club Albums.

albums that have been released by Bombay Bicycle

10. The Advert
Composition – Uses Conventions
A very common convention of the Indie genre promotional adverts
is that they feature the title of the band at the top, the information
about the single or album and its release date, then a photo and
finally extra information such as website and record label
information at the bottom. By following this composition of objects
on the advert we have used this convention successfully.

The photographs that I have analysed in the Indie genre
has a warm, slightly vintage feel and by grading the
photo with filters and contrasting we have reflected this
convention.
Finally the photo that is featured on the advert
conventionally features the members of the band
posing, introducing them to the audience directly. By
composing our band in this way we are following this
convention.
