iPad Initiative at the American
International School of Lusaka
Technology available prior to the
iPad initiative
IT lab, Media Lab and a few
desktops in the library
Why the need for iPads?
Promotes educational innovation
and technological competence
among faculty members
They are effective, durable, reliable
and achieve their educational aims
of going further, faster and with
more engagement
AISL launched it’s iPad program in
the first semester of 2011-2012
academic year
Students in the sixth and tenth
grades received iPads.
The primary school purchased one
class set (20 iPads) to be shared
What was parent feedback?
“It’s been a great innovation for
the school and it helps assist the
students stay up to date with
updated technology. I fully support
the program” – Rick Briggs, parent
What did students think?
“The iPad is a HUGE help in school
– you don’t have to wait until you
get home to start your homework.”
– Tora Turner, 6th grader
Phase II
Secondary campus moved to a 1:1
program at the start of the 2012-
2013 school year.
The primary school purchased an
additional class set to be shared
among Kindergarten to Grade 3
Phase III
This school year, Grade 5 has
moved to 1:1, with Grades 3 and 4
functioning at a 1:2
A third set was purchased for
Kindergarten to Grades 2
How are iPads being used?
Each teacher can choose the apps
they want to use with their classes.
Over the course of the last 3
years, teachers are finding
processing apps and screen shot
apps the most useful.
Explain Everything, Screen Chomp
and Skitch allow students to share
their knowledge of the central
ideas in a new format.
Socrative, Nearpod and eClicker
allow teacher to pre-assess
students and get instant feedback
The Future?
AISL plans to continue the iPad
program until all grades, from
Grade 2-12 are functioning on a
1:1 system
Can it’s success be measured?
According to AISL’s primary
principal, Mr. Jeff Williams…
