2. Energy efficiency is a hot topic when it comes to cars. Manufacturers are
keen on improving their technology when it comes to fuel consumption,
mainly dealing with car structure and improving engine design and function
to prolong fuel.
In cars, only about 15 per cent of the
energy from the fuel in the tank is used
to get the car running down the road or
run useful air conditioning system. The
rest of the energy is consumed
somewhere else less beneficial. The
need to improve fuel efficiency with
technologies is, therefore, enormous.
1. Over 62 per cent of the fuel’s energy is lost in the internal combustion
engine in gasoline-powered vehicles.
2. In the city, a car that stops at traffic or at stoplights loses as much as
17.2 per cent. Technologies, such as integrated starter or generator
systems help reduce these losses by automatically tuning the engine
off when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarting it instantaneously
when the accelerator is pressed.
3. Air conditioning, windshield wipers, power steering, and other
accessories use energy generated from the engine. This cost the car
2.2 per cent. Fuel economy improvements of up to 1 per cent may be
achievable with more efficient
alternator systems and power
steering pumps. The window
filming technology, especially
those that has non-reflective dye
and a layer of metallised film that
effectively rejects heat from the
sun.
4. Energy of about 5.6 per
cent is lost in the transmission and other driveline parts. Automated
manual transmission and continuously variable transmission are being
developed to reduce these losses.
3. 5. A car expends energy to move air out of the way, as it runs down the
road and loses 2.6 per cent. The wind slows down the car more
effectively at higher speed, thus,
the improvements aimed at
aerodynamics. Smoother vehicle
shapes reduce drag significantly,
but reductions of 20-30 per cent
are still possible.
Energy efficient technology is improving
these days. In the future, the
automotive industry will find more way to reduce fuel consumption and help
the car run more miles.
