Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08
The haddock catch on this page has fallen off lately, although this was considered one of the very
best minn kota maxxum grounds for haddock and cod in the Gulf of Maine. Hake are also very ample
during the summer months and often while in October in the muddy bottom near the benefit. Inside
100 fathoms, on a "punkin" bottom of rocks and pea gravel, near the soil, haddock are normally
found from December to Mar. Cod, pollock, and cusk occur from May to October, the first kind on
the rocky and gravelly portions, the second on the deep soundings, with all the Northeast Top the
best summer season ground. This is an particularly good winter and fall soil for haddock. Halibut
tend to be found in 35 fathoms (little fish) from Sept . through November; also In spring and early
summer time. This soil is fished by vessels from Cape Cod, Size., to Cutler, Me., primarily by
trawling, some hands-liner, but no gill netting of value as however.
Tobins. A name provided to a piece of ground about 20 miles sq lying S. by E. from the Highland
Light. It runs from about 40 miles to about 60 miles offshore, the depths progressively increasing as
the bottom slopes away equally from the shore from 75 to 95 fathoms over a bottom of clay, sand,
and pebbles. Cod are taken here in thesummer and spring, and fall, and haddock inFebruary and
March, and Apr. Compared with the grounds off Chatham, this is not to be considered a hake
ground, despite the fact that a few hake are considered here in summertime.
John Dyers Ridge. This is placed 14 a long way S. by E. from Toothakers Ridge, 40 miles S. by E.
from Monhegan Island, and 7 miles NE. from Cashes Bank. It can be about 5 miles extended by 2
miles vast, lying inside an ENE. and WSW. route. The water is shoalest on the western benefit,
where are from 45 to 50 fathoms over a razor-sharp, pebbly bottom; thence the floor slopes to the
NE. into 75 and 80 fathoms spanning a hard, gravelly, and muddy bottom, in every other directions
falling off sharply to 90 and 100 fathom soundings over a dirty bottom.
The Shoal Ground, stretches easterly from Thacher Island, has depths from 20 to 30 fathoms
spanning a bottom of sand and gravel. This area is approximately 15 a long way long by 5 mls wide
and is an important pollock ground inside their spawning time as well as a very good fall cod-
sportfishing ground. It really is about 12 miles E. by N. from Thacher Island to its center and 21 a
long way SE. by S. from the Isle of Shoals. Flounder draggers also operate right here on the shoal
ground and around Thacher Island but mostly to eastward And southeastward.
East side of Cape Cod. The ocean bottom off the east part of Cape Cod is mainly sandy and slopes
away from gradually in the beach, getting to depths of 30 to 40 fathoms at 5 to 7 miles from land.
Beneath Chatham the slope is even more gradual. Within these limits good catches of cod are taken
sometimes, and to a less degree the same is true of haddock. Far away from the shore, in from 40 to
80 fathoms and from a point 8 or 10 miles off of the Highlands of Cape Cod to another point lying 20
miles or even more SSE. from Chatham Lighting fixtures, is a constant stretch of excellent haddock
grounds for winter minn kota maxxum. The deep h2o off Chatham furnishes outstanding hake sport
fishing in summer and fall.
Harvey Blacks Ridge. This is SE. ? S. from the lightship off Portland, distant 42 miles, and SE. from
New Ledge, distant 8 miles. From Glovers Rock and roll, off Tiny Point, Me. this ridge lies SE. by S. ?
S. 41 miles. It extends within an ENE. and WSW. route about 4 miles long by I mile large. Depths
regular 70 to 100 fathoms over a bottom part of yellow-colored pea gravel and clay-based. Cod are
taken right here all the 12 months. Haddock are found in the strong water in the spring: cusk every
one of the year in deep normal water, together with hake in summer season, also around the muddy
base in serious water. Pollock and other area-schooling minn kota maxxum are found in their correct
season.
This is certainly essentially a cod terrain for the entire calendar year, the kinds being most abundant
from May 1 to Nov. It is a cusk ground each of the year in the hard underside of the further April,
Mar and elements showing the largest schools. Hake also are numerous in 70 fathoms and deeper on
the mud in summer and fall.
Eastern Shoal Water of Cape Ann. This is generally considered an integral part of Jeffreys and is
often spoken of as West Jeffreys by the anglers. It stretches In an ENE. direction from Cape Ann for
a extended distance of from 15 to 18 a long way. It is, in fact, a southwest continuation of Jeffreys
Ledge, the two creating a nearly continuous ridge running NE. from Cape Ann a distance of
approximately 42 mls. Depths around the so-called Eastern Shoal H2o vary from 20 to 45 fathoms,
the bottom being of rocks, pebbles, and coarse gravel above most of its extent. Sand and dirt happen
on the sides. The eastern part of the floor is resorted to through the haddock fleet during the drop
and early winter, along with other parts are visited pretty much during the complete year forcod and
haddock, and pollock by boats and vessels from Cape Ann and by create of various varieties from
Portland and Boston-line trawlers, gill-netters, and a few of the new type of tiny otter trawlers, this
second option fleet of create constantly developing in number.
Jeffreys Ledge bears S. ? W. from the lightship off Portland, 19 kilometers to the north edge and 22
kilometers S. through the buoy on the Weep and Tone to the side of the shoal.
Big Ridge (near Cashes Bank). This really is a broken and rocky bit of bottom working from the idea
of the southeastern part of the floor, at about 10 kilometers S. from your buoy on Ammens Rock and
roll and about 82 miles SE. ? S. in the lightship at Portland, to a point about 20 miles S. by E. from
the buoy named. Its length will not be to be mentioned definitely, and is particularly probably more
than here demonstrated. The width averages about 1? to 2 kilometers. Depths are from 65 to 80
fathoms and more, increasing gradually since it goes outside the main bank. The kinds and their
conditions of large quantity here are as on Cashes Bank. Perhaps this is much more of a cod and
cusk ground than is the major part of Cashes Bank, the cusk getting particularly plentiful during
Mar and Apr. Halibut are found within May and June in from 50 to 60 fathoms water. A considerable
amount of the minn kota maxxum shown inside the table in the catch through the area incorporated
into Cashes Lender may well have come using this piece of ground.
This lender is now mostly an Italian boat ground and is employed by small art from Boston and
Gloucester. Gill-netting here is especially extensive in Dec and Nov, mostly for pollock. Netters
operate about 22 miles SSE. from Eastern Part of 22 to 25 fathoms on a hard bottom. Good pollock
attracts are made in 25 to 40 fathoms around the southeastern and eastern slopes from the latter
element of November and early Dec. Haddock are here from November 1 to March 1 and from Apr
20 to May 15. Cod can be found all the 12 months, the largest school occurring throughout August,
October and September. This is a cusk ground from December to March in the greater water. What
seems a somewhat strange occurrence over these later many years was the appearance of a
considerable institution of halibut on the northern slope of Stellwagen over the past half of Apr
1926, a number of small craft getting from 2,000 to 3,000 kilos in their fares.
Apparently the great quantity of cod on this terrain is due to the fantastic quantity of shrimps and
soft-shelled crabs found on the muddy bottom part and on the rocks that compose this ground. There
seem to be most of these deep-water reasons about and between the shoaler grounds, as near
Cashes, Fippenies, and Jeffreys, which evidently serve as fairways over which the schools of hake,
cod, and cusk, move from Georges Banking institution into the Gulf of Maine in the spring of the
year.
On and about all of these shoals the sail fleet makes very good catches, primarily consisting of cod
but with a reasonable proportion of pollock, also, and in the deeper h2o close to them, in spring and
summer, a considerable amount of haddock. An occasional sizeable halibut is taken, and even good
attracts have been noted. There were documented in the daily report in the Boston Fish Bureau
between May 15 and August1920 and 15, 10 trips produced by the smaller vessels of the halibut
fleet that landed fares of from 2,000 to ten thousand pounds with this species from this area. If the
halibut. fishery would be adopted here as in other areas, perhaps more would be taken. "Rip sport
fishing," as conducted here, is completed "with a drift," moving over the shoals and, as they move off
from them, sailing returning to repeat the process. The fish are taken by hand-lining with "cockle"
lure or by "jigging" the fish with a gleaming piece of aluminum representing a herring or similar
minn kota maxxum, beneath which are establish twin hooks, the minn kota maxxum getting struck
when it is felt looking into the appeal. This fishery generally is carried on during June, May and July
and August. In the herring and mackerel seasons these grounds usually supply good fishing for these
particular species, the fish usually striking here from May 15 to July 15.
Wild Pet cat Ridge. Quite heavy tides sweep more than this soil, making it tough to haul products in
minn kota maxxum with it, whence, it is said, will come the title. It lies NNE from Highland Light,
Cape Cod, 18 miles to its southern edge; SE ? S from Thacher Tropical island 31 kilometers; and is
about 7? mls long within a north and south direction by about 3? miles large. The bottom is hard, of
damaged shells and sand, and depths come from 45 to 60 fathoms. There are 100 fathom depths
inside of the soil and from 100 to 110 fathoms outside of it. But very little fished whenever you want
other than the wintertime seasons, although apparently, it is really an all the calendar year ground
for cod, cusk, and haddock.
On the ledgecod and haddock, and cusk are consumed the full winter season and early
springspringtime, winter and perhaps redecorating the best angling. There are more or less pollock,
and hake constitute a crucial part of the find. In individuals seasons when herring make their
appearance during these waters the seiners make good catches here, generally of food minn kota
maxxum, as the big herring are termed with the trade. The mackerel, also, appear on these grounds
as well as on the smaller grounds nearer to shoreline to westward and northward in good-sized
colleges, usually from July 1 through Sept. For many years the haddock find from this bank has been
of considerable relevance, and this declaration remains real for the past several years as well.
Southeast Jeffreys. Off the southeast edge of Jeffreys, about 24 miles SE. from Boon Island, is a piece
of sport fishing ground having a hard bottom ofpea gravel and yellow sand, and stones, where
depths slope aside gradually in the 50-fathom soundings near the main body of your bank towards
the 90-fathom mark farther out. This area is an excellent ground for haddock and cod in the winter
months and spring as well as a hake soil in March. This sport fishing place is about 3 or 4 miles sq
and is bounded on all but the american side by muddy bottom, which is of little worth as a minn kota
maxxum ground. Usually there is good haddocking in Mar on the outside of Jeffreys, on its
southeastern edge and in the cove between it and Tillies in 70 and 60 fathom depths with a broken
and muddy underside. This location lies SE ? from the Isle of Shoals, 27 kilometers to the heart.
A comparatively little known and obviously as but unnamed ridge lies E. by S. 15 a long way from
the buoy on Cashes Ledge, which happens to be reported to be great minn kota maxxum ground,
especially for cod and cusk. With both species present here the year close to, the cod is said to be
most ample in Apr and May: and also the cusk, as is also the tip on these outlying ridges, appears in
largest amounts in April and March. Haddock seem to be somewhat rare in this article.
3-Dory Ridge. Away from New Ledge and about midway between it and Harvey Blacks Ridge is a
little ridge about 3 miles long, operating NE. and SW., contributing to ? mile broad. This is placed
SE. by S. through the Portland Lightship. 38 kilometers to the shoal of 55 fathoms, that is near its
center. Out of this the ground slopes away on all sides to 65 and 63 fathom depths over which area
the bottom is made up of gravel, sand and mud and rocks. At these reduced depths are located
"water lines" (clay cylinders), where minn kota maxxum ends unexpectedly. All about the ridge are
depths of 80 to 100 fathoms on the bottom of mud. This is almost entirely a cod ground, very good
from May possibly to August.
Off N and Newburyport. and SW. of your Isle of Shoals are gill-netting grounds that are significantly
used. Trawling and netting are maintained, beginning in 40 fathoms in February and March and
working off to 70 fathoms off Salisbury Bench in May. Cod are on this ground about two weeks in
October as well as in February and March are found in abundance away from Boars Head. Hake are
present here every one of the fall and therefore are found all along the southeast side of the grounds
in depths of 45 to 60 fathoms. A certain amount of halibut may be consumed in most yrs at
numerous points on the bottom of hard pea gravel in springtime and early summer in 35 to 65
fathoms. In most many years a large amount of mackerel is adopted Jeffreys, particularly so in 1925.
Herring, also, are often abundant within "herring years".
Stellwagen Financial institution also called Center Bank. This separates Massachusetts Bay from the
open water of the Gulf of Maine and stretches from in close proximity to Cape Ann nearly to Cape
Cod. The center of this ground bears S by E ? E from Thacher N and Tropical isle by W ? W from
Highland Gentle, Cape Cod. The Southern Part of the Bank is faraway 5? a long way from Race Point
Cape Cod, and its particular northwest prong reaches to within 12 or 15 miles of Eastern Stage Cape
Cod. The shoaler portion, with depths from 9? to 19 fathoms, is 17? miles very long in a N by S and
W by E route and has a width of 4 a long way. This component is soft sand but the eastern slope, in
depths of from 25 to 55 fathoms, is made up of coarse yellow sand pebbles and gravel. On this
gravelly slope cod and haddock are already taken plentifully over a lasting of many years, the cod in
the tumble and spring and the haddock in the winter months. About the southern conclusion of the
financial institution and in between this and Race Stage cod abound in tumble and winter. The full
bank is yet another mackerel floor when the species of fish have been in these oceans, the best
within the season averaging to be from July 15 through Sept.
Tillies Bank. [13] This bears E And S from Eastern Level Light just dropping Thacher Island Light,
then 3 miles even farther for best fishing: and E. by S. ? S. from Thacher Island, Cape Ann, through
which the shoal on the centre of the ground is distant 18 miles. It is a small difficult spot with depths
of from 25 to 28 fathoms, outside of which the drinking water deepens to 40 fathoms over a
significant area. The duration of the entire soil is about 10 miles inside an E. and W. direction and
the breadth about 5 miles. At the edge it falls off of rapidly to depths of 50 to 60 fathoms before
getting to the soil at nonetheless greater depths but an area of shoal water links this terrain with To
the west Jeffreys. The base is rough and minn kota maxxum pro 80 rocky over the greater part of the
bank. Tillies was formerly regarded among the best minn kota maxxum reasons off Cape Ann and is
also still resorted to for cod and haddock in the fall and spring; for hake from thesummer time and
springtime, and drop, and for pollock in the early spring and slip. The fishing is mainly by trawling,
with the gillnetters operating on the shoal grounds in just 50 fathoms.
Earlier this fishery was virtually entirely carried on by trawlers and fingers-liners, but the gill-world
wide web fishery on these grounds is of great and steadily growing importance. Of late the greater
part of the haddock catch continues to be taken through the "otter-trawl" approach, this products
being managed by steamers of considerable size and upon the greater distant grounds, such as
Georges Bank, the South Funnel, and the Traditional western Bank. The same change to minn kota
maxxum grounds farther overseas has to an excellent extent taken place in the fleet of larger sailing
vessels, as a result leaving Jeffreys and other inshore banks towards the smaller art; except that,
with the high prices of haddock and cod in the wintertime, it is often rewarding for these larger
vessels to operate off to near-by banks for starters set and return to harbour the same day.
A ridge being untruthful NW. of Cashes Lender and almost parallel using the main lender, only
separated by a narrow deep station, is about 7 miles lengthy by 1? miles large. The types and the
periods are the same here as on Cashes Banking institution.
[Footnote 13: We have seen some supposition as to the beginning of the relatively unusual name of
this financial institution. The writer would note that there is an Edward Tillie within the Company of
Captain John Smith as he explored this region in 1614 and a Tilly (possibly the same person) who
managed a fishing station at Cape Ann during the years 1625 and 1624.]
Clay-based Ridge. At various factors about the sides of Jeffreys Ledge are small separate ridges,
which in their season are good minn kota maxxum reasons. The present part of ground is 26 a long
way S. by W. from your lightship at Portland, which course and distance provide us towards the
northern benefit. There is a 50-fathom shoal of small sizing upon it, but elsewhere soundings typical
from 65 to 70 fathoms more than a bottom of hard clay-based. The length of the floor is about 4
miles NNE. and SSW., and the breadth about 1 mile. This furnishes great haddocking in January,
Feb. and March. the latter month showing the very best fishing.
Outer Crab Ledge. The center lies about 14 miles ESE from Chatham Lights. It extends about 5 or 6
miles in a N. and S. direction and it is about 1 mile broad. Depths run from 19 to 23 fathoms; the
base is rocky. The sportfishing is principally for cod from the winter, springtime and tumble. Vessel
minn kota maxxum is principally early in the year.
Cusk are plentiful here in the spring, by incorporating in the drop. Cod are taken all the year about,
the Springtime school becoming the largest. Hake are most numerous From the spring and fall
months, and haddock will not be common but they are most quite a few in winter.
A small cove makes for a shorter distance in to the western area of Jeffreys Ledge at about 20 miles
from Boon Tropical isle in a SE. by S. ? S. direction. The bottom inside the cove is broken and
muddy, with depths of about 60 fathoms. Thence, the floor slopes away to the oral cavity, where the
ends about the entrance are rocky and have 75 and 70 fathom depths. These rocky places are cusk
grounds inJanuary and February, and March, during which months the cove itself normally furnishes
good haddock minn kota maxxum. Exterior these depths the water deepens westward across a
muddy bottom part, where come from 80 to 90 and in many cases 100 fathoms of water. Minn Kota
Maxxum this is mainly by trawl and gill nets.
Fifty-five Fathom Bunch. Western side of Cashes Bank is really a rocky ridge extending ENE. and
WSW. about 4 miles and achieving a thickness of about 1 mile. This really is mainly a cod floor, the
months for the kinds being as on Cashes Bank.
Due E. through the buoy on Ammens Rock about 12 miles is situated a ridge that rises from the 100
to 120 fathom depths about it into a depth around 80 fathoms over a bottom of crackedsoil and
ground, and seashells. This shoaler piece is a few 3 kilometers long. N. by E. and S. by NW., by 1
mile vast. It furnishes good fishing for cod, hake, and cusk in the spring, April being the best season.
Another large ridge, paralleling the 100-fathom curve of Georges Lender at about 20 mls N. of this,
lies SE by S from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, 40 miles to its center; SE by S 110 kilometers from
Portland Lightship; ESE 92 a long way from Cape Ann to its western finish, and E. by S. ? S. from
your ship at Boston 100 miles. This ridge also is of fairly indefinite region, being perhaps 20 miles
long in an ESE by WNW course by 1? to three mls wide. Evidently depths are fairly standard from 85
to 95 fathoms, the foot of the ridge being of coarse black sand and getting blue mud in the greater
area around it. This is said to be a good cod and cusk ground the year round.
GEORGES Location
Platt's Bank or New Ledge. This bears E. by N. ? N. from Thacher Tropical island, from which the
shoal part of the ledge is distant 53 miles. From Portland Lightship it is 30 miles SSE. to the core of
the ground. The bank is about 12 miles very long, NE. and SW.. and about 8 mls wide. The western
shoal, which is of small degree and rocky and that has a considerable amount of lifeless shells with
it, is found near the center, its range being 29 fathoms. From this shoal on the Southwest Peak is
about 11 miles SW. by S. Another shoal lies E. 3 kilometers, having about 30 fathoms over fine sand
and pea gravel, which is a very good fall ground for haddock. East-northeast from your western
shoal 3 mls brings us to a difficult ridge, with spots of hard soil and pebbles between, in 65-fathom
degree, which is a great winter cusk ground, these fish remaining on this page until Apr. Over a
great deal of the bank the depths range between 30 to 35 fathoms with a bottom of gravel and rocks.
In the edge of the shoaler place the bottom slopes gradually to 50 or 60 fathoms, beyond which it
falls suddenly to 80 or 90 fathoms over a dirty bottom.
Jeffreys Ledge. Of fairly small dimensions, even though jeffreys Ledge could be considered among
the finest minn kota maxxum grounds in the Gulf of Maine. It appears to be an extension in the shoal
soil that makes off of in an easterly direction from Cape Ann, it is about 20 a long way long in the
NE. and SW. course and about 4 miles wide. Its the southern area of limits is 42? 54' and its north
limit 43? north latitude; its western and eastern borders may be placed at 69? 58' and 70? 18'
western longitude. The bottom is difficult on the shoaler parts, with gravel and pebbles around the
edges. Depths on the bank are from 27 to 35 fathoms, falling to 40 or 50 on the edges. The shoalest
water is placed from 4 to 5 miles N. by E. from the buoy, where there is 22 fathoms. Ordinarily there
is very little or no tide, with an occasional present SW. You will find, however, solid westerly
currents with the weighty easterly winds, and often soon after a period of minor weather without
having strong tides there will all of a sudden develop a hefty SW. movement, indicating the approach
of the strong northwester. This appears a general tip in the Gulf of Maine and is, probably, prevalent
above much of our North Atlantic coast.
The Ridge (in the southern component of Fippenies). This is certainly SSE. from your light-ship at
Portland 75 miles and has a base of yellow pebbles and mudpebbles and depths of 75 to 95 fathoms.
Cod are present here in Jan and Dec; cusk the entire year around, but a majority of numerous in
February and March; haddock in December and January; hake in October and September. The
length of this bank comes from 4 to 5 miles and the size somewhat lower than 2 kilometers. It is
based on an ENE. and WSW. direction.
Howard Nunans Ridge. Of similar character to the final, this increases 4 a long way inside of and
parallel on it, lying 14 miles from Cape Porpoise on the same bearings (SE. by S. ? S.). This is
apparently made up of two shoals, the northern rising to 50 fathoms water over a rocky, broken base
about 3 miles long by 1 mile broad, deepening southwesterly to a thin, muddy gully, where are 80
fathoms, and soaring again to 60 fathoms over rocks and cracked ground. The entire ground is all
about 8 a long way long with average widths of from 1 to 1? mls. This terrain furnishes good cod
angling and haddocking from the fall and early winter months and yet again in the spring several
weeks.
Lying about SE. by S. ? 5. from the Isle of Shoals 20 a long way, 13 kilometers S. by W. through the
whistling buoy on Jeffreys, and 43 miles S. by W. from Cape Elizabeth can be a broken piece of
bottom experiencing from 75 to 85 fathoms of water over it, which is a haddock ground from January
to April as well as a cusk and hake ground all the year.
Maurice Lubee's Soil. This is outside of New Ledge (Platts Bank) 47 miles SSE. from the lightship at
Portland. Extending inside an ENE. and WSW. direction, its limitations are somewhat indefinite. It is
actually perhaps 8 miles very long by 3 miles large and has depths from 95 to 110 fathoms across a
bottom consisting mostly of mud.
A tiny shoal inside the western portion of the Cove of Jeffreys, getting 50 fathoms over a bottom part
of glowing blue clay and rocks and rising from your 60 and 70 fathom soundings about it, is about 1?
kilometers long by about 3/4 mile wide. This shoal is SSE. from Boon Island 15 miles. It is a winter
terrain for cod and haddock.
Pollock Rip Reasons. These lay between Pollock Rip Lightship and Shovelful Lightship and increase
northward to Pollock Rip Shoal. These grounds are 3 mls long, E. and W., by 2 miles N. and S. The
depths range from 4 to 12 fathoms. These are generally fished from Monomoy and also in stormy
conditions from Chatham instead of visiting the Crab Ledge. Late early in the year and at the
beginning of the slip the cod move inshore. In winter the cod depart Pollock Rip for the deeper
water.
Morris Ledge. This is situated eastward of Chatham and is a favorite floor for certain cod fishermen
in the course of spring and early summer. Schooners and small art operate in this article.
[Desk 3--External Fishing Grounds, exhibiting the principle types taken on them.]
Jerry Yorks Ridge. This lies just inside and paralleling Jeffreys Ledge WNW. from its shoal water and
approximately 5 mls distant from the ledge contributing to 18 mls SE. by S. ? S. from Cape Porpoise.
This ground has from 45 to 48 fathoms water on a rocky broken base. It is about 5 mls long, NNE.
and SSW., and averages 1? miles wide. This is an excellent cod and haddock ground Inside the fall
and up to January, these minn kota maxxum coming back here in the spring months.
Nantucket Shoals. This stretch of cafes and much deeper waters in between, roughly triangular in
form with its apex at the northern, lies across the western side of the Southern Channel, stretching
out S. and SE. through the southern end of Cape Cod and Nantucket Island. From Monomoy Point
out Rogers Fishing Floor, on the eastern edge of Phelps Bank, it is actually SSE. 80 miles. Its width
from Southeast Rips to the american edge of New South Shoal is 40 miles. The area includes a
number of "fishing spots" and shoals, among which the following are the most crucial: Pollock Rip
Ground, Crown and Increased Shoal, Great Rip, Davis Bank, Fishing Rip, Old and New South Shoal,
and Phelps Bank.
About the inner aspects of this soil, particularly, the gill-net fleet operates substantially, mainly
inside the full and spring, on northwest Jeffreys 8 to 12 kilometers E. and SE. from Thacher Isle,
where the bottom is fine sand and rocks. Other gill-netting grounds are 8 to 15 kilometers NE. by E.
from Thacher Tropical island in 22 fathoms on a hard underside of soil and blended material of
gravel and yellow sand. The Cove of Jeffreys, NE. by E. 12 to 15 miles from Thacher Isle, is a beloved
haddock ground in the spring (April 20 to May 15) in 45 to 70 or even 80 fathoms, although gill nets
are not usually fished in additional than 50 fathoms due to the, weight of your nets from the deeper
h2o. In the spring (in May and April), the haddock can be found in on Scantum, 10 kilometers NNE.
from Thacher Tropical island between Jeffreys Ledge as well as the Isle of Shoals, over a broken
bottom of rocks and glowing blue clay in 55 to 70 fathoms.
Fippenies Bank. This consists of two shoals averaging 80 fathoms in depth with a channel of 90
fathoms between them. These run NE. and SW., the eastern shoal about 8 miles long by 1 distance
wide, the western about 50 % as huge. Fippenies bears E. 1/4 S. from Thacher Tropical island,
distant 61 miles; from Portland Lightship, SE. by S. ? S, 57 mls to the western point of the northern
shoal in 35 fathoms. Your budget is nearly 10 miles lengthy NE. and SW. and averages 4? miles
broad. The bottom is ofpebbles and gravel, and clay, experiencing depths over much of the shoal of
around 30 fathoms but also from 36 to 60 fathoms. It is fished by the shoreline fleet in the spring
and early on summer. The minn kota maxxum and periods are as on Cashes Bank. Earlier twice as a
lot of haddock had been taken right here as on Cashes or on Platts Bank, but this has modified in
recent years. Halibut are taken here in acceptable numbers in 45 to 55 fathom depths inJuly and
June, and August on the "black gravel" in the european and the southern area of edge. The "white
gravel" on the to the north shoal is of very little account like a minn kota maxxum ground, because it
is composed largely of the shells of old scallops.
The Cod Ridge (formerly Exterior Harris Floor). This is placed NE. from the Northeast Top of New
Ledge, distant 7 miles. It extends within an ENE. and WSW. path, the ground reducing and the
drinking water deepening to the eastward, the shoal floor having 45 fathoms on a bottom of small
pebbles and good black gravel and beach sand, depths increasing in most other instructions to 100
fathoms about the mud and sloping off of somewhat steeply, especially on the southeast part, where
the decline is very well-defined. The length of the soil is about 5 miles, the width 1 mile. This is an
all-the-year cod ground, the season of greatest abundance being from May 1 to October. The
haddock are usually In their greatest phone numbers here from January 1 to April. Probably because
the water is not deeply enough to the former, aside from the small seafood, that happen to be of
little value for the fishermen; along with the ground is just not muddy adequate for the second
option species, evidently no multitude of cusk or hake are taken on this page on the ridge. Both
types, however, can be found about the edges in the strong water, the cusk about the sharpest, most
difficult part of the underside (perhaps most common in Feb . and March), the hake, as usual, in the
muddy components about it.
This shore furnishes excellent mackerel sportfishing throughout most of the year when these fish are
in north waters. Virtually no gill-netters function here, the distance to market becoming great and
the chance of tough weather and the lack of harmless harbor which makes it dangerous for small
art. From this expand of shoreline (mostly from off Chatham) there were landed at Boston in the
year 1923, 66 fares with a overall of 1,797,826 pounds priced at $76,875.
This ridge lies in a SE. and NW. route, extending fairly indefinitely but for at least 10 miles by about
3 miles in width. About the ridge the base is shattered--a hard bottom of black colored gravel, which
generally means a great minn kota maxxum spot--the depths here being from 85 to 90 fathoms.
There are numerous muddy spots in between these more difficult pieces of ground where soundings
run to 100 fathoms or slightly more. The nearby bottom is generally of mud, and the depths average
from 100 to 125 fathoms. There are a number of pieces of gravelly hard soil in the location, each of
which probably would furnish evenly good minn kota maxxum for cod and cusk at the same months
as on the ridge.

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08 The haddock catch on this page has fallen off lately, although this was considered one of the very best minn kota maxxum grounds for haddock and cod in the Gulf of Maine. Hake are also very ample during the summer months and often while in October in the muddy bottom near the benefit. Inside 100 fathoms, on a "punkin" bottom of rocks and pea gravel, near the soil, haddock are normally found from December to Mar. Cod, pollock, and cusk occur from May to October, the first kind on the rocky and gravelly portions, the second on the deep soundings, with all the Northeast Top the best summer season ground. This is an particularly good winter and fall soil for haddock. Halibut tend to be found in 35 fathoms (little fish) from Sept . through November; also In spring and early summer time. This soil is fished by vessels from Cape Cod, Size., to Cutler, Me., primarily by trawling, some hands-liner, but no gill netting of value as however. Tobins. A name provided to a piece of ground about 20 miles sq lying S. by E. from the Highland Light. It runs from about 40 miles to about 60 miles offshore, the depths progressively increasing as the bottom slopes away equally from the shore from 75 to 95 fathoms over a bottom of clay, sand, and pebbles. Cod are taken here in thesummer and spring, and fall, and haddock inFebruary and March, and Apr. Compared with the grounds off Chatham, this is not to be considered a hake ground, despite the fact that a few hake are considered here in summertime. John Dyers Ridge. This is placed 14 a long way S. by E. from Toothakers Ridge, 40 miles S. by E. from Monhegan Island, and 7 miles NE. from Cashes Bank. It can be about 5 miles extended by 2 miles vast, lying inside an ENE. and WSW. route. The water is shoalest on the western benefit, where are from 45 to 50 fathoms over a razor-sharp, pebbly bottom; thence the floor slopes to the NE. into 75 and 80 fathoms spanning a hard, gravelly, and muddy bottom, in every other directions falling off sharply to 90 and 100 fathom soundings over a dirty bottom. The Shoal Ground, stretches easterly from Thacher Island, has depths from 20 to 30 fathoms spanning a bottom of sand and gravel. This area is approximately 15 a long way long by 5 mls wide and is an important pollock ground inside their spawning time as well as a very good fall cod- sportfishing ground. It really is about 12 miles E. by N. from Thacher Island to its center and 21 a long way SE. by S. from the Isle of Shoals. Flounder draggers also operate right here on the shoal ground and around Thacher Island but mostly to eastward And southeastward. East side of Cape Cod. The ocean bottom off the east part of Cape Cod is mainly sandy and slopes away from gradually in the beach, getting to depths of 30 to 40 fathoms at 5 to 7 miles from land. Beneath Chatham the slope is even more gradual. Within these limits good catches of cod are taken sometimes, and to a less degree the same is true of haddock. Far away from the shore, in from 40 to 80 fathoms and from a point 8 or 10 miles off of the Highlands of Cape Cod to another point lying 20 miles or even more SSE. from Chatham Lighting fixtures, is a constant stretch of excellent haddock grounds for winter minn kota maxxum. The deep h2o off Chatham furnishes outstanding hake sport fishing in summer and fall. Harvey Blacks Ridge. This is SE. ? S. from the lightship off Portland, distant 42 miles, and SE. from New Ledge, distant 8 miles. From Glovers Rock and roll, off Tiny Point, Me. this ridge lies SE. by S. ? S. 41 miles. It extends within an ENE. and WSW. route about 4 miles long by I mile large. Depths regular 70 to 100 fathoms over a bottom part of yellow-colored pea gravel and clay-based. Cod are taken right here all the 12 months. Haddock are found in the strong water in the spring: cusk every one of the year in deep normal water, together with hake in summer season, also around the muddy
  • 2. base in serious water. Pollock and other area-schooling minn kota maxxum are found in their correct season. This is certainly essentially a cod terrain for the entire calendar year, the kinds being most abundant from May 1 to Nov. It is a cusk ground each of the year in the hard underside of the further April, Mar and elements showing the largest schools. Hake also are numerous in 70 fathoms and deeper on the mud in summer and fall. Eastern Shoal Water of Cape Ann. This is generally considered an integral part of Jeffreys and is often spoken of as West Jeffreys by the anglers. It stretches In an ENE. direction from Cape Ann for a extended distance of from 15 to 18 a long way. It is, in fact, a southwest continuation of Jeffreys Ledge, the two creating a nearly continuous ridge running NE. from Cape Ann a distance of approximately 42 mls. Depths around the so-called Eastern Shoal H2o vary from 20 to 45 fathoms, the bottom being of rocks, pebbles, and coarse gravel above most of its extent. Sand and dirt happen on the sides. The eastern part of the floor is resorted to through the haddock fleet during the drop and early winter, along with other parts are visited pretty much during the complete year forcod and haddock, and pollock by boats and vessels from Cape Ann and by create of various varieties from Portland and Boston-line trawlers, gill-netters, and a few of the new type of tiny otter trawlers, this second option fleet of create constantly developing in number. Jeffreys Ledge bears S. ? W. from the lightship off Portland, 19 kilometers to the north edge and 22 kilometers S. through the buoy on the Weep and Tone to the side of the shoal. Big Ridge (near Cashes Bank). This really is a broken and rocky bit of bottom working from the idea of the southeastern part of the floor, at about 10 kilometers S. from your buoy on Ammens Rock and roll and about 82 miles SE. ? S. in the lightship at Portland, to a point about 20 miles S. by E. from the buoy named. Its length will not be to be mentioned definitely, and is particularly probably more than here demonstrated. The width averages about 1? to 2 kilometers. Depths are from 65 to 80 fathoms and more, increasing gradually since it goes outside the main bank. The kinds and their conditions of large quantity here are as on Cashes Bank. Perhaps this is much more of a cod and cusk ground than is the major part of Cashes Bank, the cusk getting particularly plentiful during Mar and Apr. Halibut are found within May and June in from 50 to 60 fathoms water. A considerable amount of the minn kota maxxum shown inside the table in the catch through the area incorporated into Cashes Lender may well have come using this piece of ground. This lender is now mostly an Italian boat ground and is employed by small art from Boston and Gloucester. Gill-netting here is especially extensive in Dec and Nov, mostly for pollock. Netters operate about 22 miles SSE. from Eastern Part of 22 to 25 fathoms on a hard bottom. Good pollock attracts are made in 25 to 40 fathoms around the southeastern and eastern slopes from the latter element of November and early Dec. Haddock are here from November 1 to March 1 and from Apr 20 to May 15. Cod can be found all the 12 months, the largest school occurring throughout August, October and September. This is a cusk ground from December to March in the greater water. What seems a somewhat strange occurrence over these later many years was the appearance of a considerable institution of halibut on the northern slope of Stellwagen over the past half of Apr 1926, a number of small craft getting from 2,000 to 3,000 kilos in their fares. Apparently the great quantity of cod on this terrain is due to the fantastic quantity of shrimps and soft-shelled crabs found on the muddy bottom part and on the rocks that compose this ground. There seem to be most of these deep-water reasons about and between the shoaler grounds, as near Cashes, Fippenies, and Jeffreys, which evidently serve as fairways over which the schools of hake, cod, and cusk, move from Georges Banking institution into the Gulf of Maine in the spring of the
  • 3. year. On and about all of these shoals the sail fleet makes very good catches, primarily consisting of cod but with a reasonable proportion of pollock, also, and in the deeper h2o close to them, in spring and summer, a considerable amount of haddock. An occasional sizeable halibut is taken, and even good attracts have been noted. There were documented in the daily report in the Boston Fish Bureau between May 15 and August1920 and 15, 10 trips produced by the smaller vessels of the halibut fleet that landed fares of from 2,000 to ten thousand pounds with this species from this area. If the halibut. fishery would be adopted here as in other areas, perhaps more would be taken. "Rip sport fishing," as conducted here, is completed "with a drift," moving over the shoals and, as they move off from them, sailing returning to repeat the process. The fish are taken by hand-lining with "cockle" lure or by "jigging" the fish with a gleaming piece of aluminum representing a herring or similar minn kota maxxum, beneath which are establish twin hooks, the minn kota maxxum getting struck when it is felt looking into the appeal. This fishery generally is carried on during June, May and July and August. In the herring and mackerel seasons these grounds usually supply good fishing for these particular species, the fish usually striking here from May 15 to July 15. Wild Pet cat Ridge. Quite heavy tides sweep more than this soil, making it tough to haul products in minn kota maxxum with it, whence, it is said, will come the title. It lies NNE from Highland Light, Cape Cod, 18 miles to its southern edge; SE ? S from Thacher Tropical island 31 kilometers; and is about 7? mls long within a north and south direction by about 3? miles large. The bottom is hard, of damaged shells and sand, and depths come from 45 to 60 fathoms. There are 100 fathom depths inside of the soil and from 100 to 110 fathoms outside of it. But very little fished whenever you want other than the wintertime seasons, although apparently, it is really an all the calendar year ground for cod, cusk, and haddock. On the ledgecod and haddock, and cusk are consumed the full winter season and early springspringtime, winter and perhaps redecorating the best angling. There are more or less pollock, and hake constitute a crucial part of the find. In individuals seasons when herring make their appearance during these waters the seiners make good catches here, generally of food minn kota maxxum, as the big herring are termed with the trade. The mackerel, also, appear on these grounds as well as on the smaller grounds nearer to shoreline to westward and northward in good-sized colleges, usually from July 1 through Sept. For many years the haddock find from this bank has been of considerable relevance, and this declaration remains real for the past several years as well. Southeast Jeffreys. Off the southeast edge of Jeffreys, about 24 miles SE. from Boon Island, is a piece of sport fishing ground having a hard bottom ofpea gravel and yellow sand, and stones, where depths slope aside gradually in the 50-fathom soundings near the main body of your bank towards the 90-fathom mark farther out. This area is an excellent ground for haddock and cod in the winter months and spring as well as a hake soil in March. This sport fishing place is about 3 or 4 miles sq and is bounded on all but the american side by muddy bottom, which is of little worth as a minn kota maxxum ground. Usually there is good haddocking in Mar on the outside of Jeffreys, on its southeastern edge and in the cove between it and Tillies in 70 and 60 fathom depths with a broken and muddy underside. This location lies SE ? from the Isle of Shoals, 27 kilometers to the heart. A comparatively little known and obviously as but unnamed ridge lies E. by S. 15 a long way from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, which happens to be reported to be great minn kota maxxum ground, especially for cod and cusk. With both species present here the year close to, the cod is said to be most ample in Apr and May: and also the cusk, as is also the tip on these outlying ridges, appears in largest amounts in April and March. Haddock seem to be somewhat rare in this article.
  • 4. 3-Dory Ridge. Away from New Ledge and about midway between it and Harvey Blacks Ridge is a little ridge about 3 miles long, operating NE. and SW., contributing to ? mile broad. This is placed SE. by S. through the Portland Lightship. 38 kilometers to the shoal of 55 fathoms, that is near its center. Out of this the ground slopes away on all sides to 65 and 63 fathom depths over which area the bottom is made up of gravel, sand and mud and rocks. At these reduced depths are located "water lines" (clay cylinders), where minn kota maxxum ends unexpectedly. All about the ridge are depths of 80 to 100 fathoms on the bottom of mud. This is almost entirely a cod ground, very good from May possibly to August. Off N and Newburyport. and SW. of your Isle of Shoals are gill-netting grounds that are significantly used. Trawling and netting are maintained, beginning in 40 fathoms in February and March and working off to 70 fathoms off Salisbury Bench in May. Cod are on this ground about two weeks in October as well as in February and March are found in abundance away from Boars Head. Hake are present here every one of the fall and therefore are found all along the southeast side of the grounds in depths of 45 to 60 fathoms. A certain amount of halibut may be consumed in most yrs at numerous points on the bottom of hard pea gravel in springtime and early summer in 35 to 65 fathoms. In most many years a large amount of mackerel is adopted Jeffreys, particularly so in 1925. Herring, also, are often abundant within "herring years". Stellwagen Financial institution also called Center Bank. This separates Massachusetts Bay from the open water of the Gulf of Maine and stretches from in close proximity to Cape Ann nearly to Cape Cod. The center of this ground bears S by E ? E from Thacher N and Tropical isle by W ? W from Highland Gentle, Cape Cod. The Southern Part of the Bank is faraway 5? a long way from Race Point Cape Cod, and its particular northwest prong reaches to within 12 or 15 miles of Eastern Stage Cape Cod. The shoaler portion, with depths from 9? to 19 fathoms, is 17? miles very long in a N by S and W by E route and has a width of 4 a long way. This component is soft sand but the eastern slope, in depths of from 25 to 55 fathoms, is made up of coarse yellow sand pebbles and gravel. On this gravelly slope cod and haddock are already taken plentifully over a lasting of many years, the cod in the tumble and spring and the haddock in the winter months. About the southern conclusion of the financial institution and in between this and Race Stage cod abound in tumble and winter. The full bank is yet another mackerel floor when the species of fish have been in these oceans, the best within the season averaging to be from July 15 through Sept. Tillies Bank. [13] This bears E And S from Eastern Level Light just dropping Thacher Island Light, then 3 miles even farther for best fishing: and E. by S. ? S. from Thacher Island, Cape Ann, through which the shoal on the centre of the ground is distant 18 miles. It is a small difficult spot with depths of from 25 to 28 fathoms, outside of which the drinking water deepens to 40 fathoms over a significant area. The duration of the entire soil is about 10 miles inside an E. and W. direction and the breadth about 5 miles. At the edge it falls off of rapidly to depths of 50 to 60 fathoms before getting to the soil at nonetheless greater depths but an area of shoal water links this terrain with To the west Jeffreys. The base is rough and minn kota maxxum pro 80 rocky over the greater part of the bank. Tillies was formerly regarded among the best minn kota maxxum reasons off Cape Ann and is also still resorted to for cod and haddock in the fall and spring; for hake from thesummer time and springtime, and drop, and for pollock in the early spring and slip. The fishing is mainly by trawling, with the gillnetters operating on the shoal grounds in just 50 fathoms. Earlier this fishery was virtually entirely carried on by trawlers and fingers-liners, but the gill-world wide web fishery on these grounds is of great and steadily growing importance. Of late the greater part of the haddock catch continues to be taken through the "otter-trawl" approach, this products being managed by steamers of considerable size and upon the greater distant grounds, such as Georges Bank, the South Funnel, and the Traditional western Bank. The same change to minn kota

A ridge being untruthful NW. of Cashes Lender and almost parallel using the main lender, only separated by a narrow deep station, is about 7 miles lengthy by 1? miles large. The types and the periods are the same here as on Cashes Banking institution. [Footnote 13: We have seen some supposition as to the beginning of the relatively unusual name of this financial institution. The writer would note that there is an Edward Tillie within the Company of Captain John Smith as he explored this region in 1614 and a Tilly (possibly the same person) who managed a fishing station at Cape Ann during the years 1625 and 1624.] Clay-based Ridge. At various factors about the sides of Jeffreys Ledge are small separate ridges, which in their season are good minn kota maxxum reasons. The present part of ground is 26 a long way S. by W. from your lightship at Portland, which course and distance provide us towards the northern benefit. There is a 50-fathom shoal of small sizing upon it, but elsewhere soundings typical from 65 to 70 fathoms more than a bottom of hard clay-based. The length of the floor is about 4 miles NNE. and SSW., and the breadth about 1 mile. This furnishes great haddocking in January, Feb. and March. the latter month showing the very best fishing. Outer Crab Ledge. The center lies about 14 miles ESE from Chatham Lights. It extends about 5 or 6 miles in a N. and S. direction and it is about 1 mile broad. Depths run from 19 to 23 fathoms; the base is rocky. The sportfishing is principally for cod from the winter, springtime and tumble. Vessel minn kota maxxum is principally early in the year. Cusk are plentiful here in the spring, by incorporating in the drop. Cod are taken all the year about, the Springtime school becoming the largest. Hake are most numerous From the spring and fall months, and haddock will not be common but they are most quite a few in winter. A small cove makes for a shorter distance in to the western area of Jeffreys Ledge at about 20 miles from Boon Tropical isle in a SE. by S. ? S. direction. The bottom inside the cove is broken and muddy, with depths of about 60 fathoms. Thence, the floor slopes away to the oral cavity, where the ends about the entrance are rocky and have 75 and 70 fathom depths. These rocky places are cusk grounds inJanuary and February, and March, during which months the cove itself normally furnishes good haddock minn kota maxxum. Exterior these depths the water deepens westward across a muddy bottom part, where come from 80 to 90 and in many cases 100 fathoms of water. Minn Kota Maxxum this is mainly by trawl and gill nets. Fifty-five Fathom Bunch. Western side of Cashes Bank is really a rocky ridge extending ENE. and WSW. about 4 miles and achieving a thickness of about 1 mile. This really is mainly a cod floor, the months for the kinds being as on Cashes Bank. Due E. through the buoy on Ammens Rock about 12 miles is situated a ridge that rises from the 100 to 120 fathom depths about it into a depth around 80 fathoms over a bottom of crackedsoil and ground, and seashells. This shoaler piece is a few 3 kilometers long. N. by E. and S. by NW., by 1 mile vast. It furnishes good fishing for cod, hake, and cusk in the spring, April being the best season. Another large ridge, paralleling the 100-fathom curve of Georges Lender at about 20 mls N. of this, lies SE by S from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, 40 miles to its center; SE by S 110 kilometers from
  • 6. Portland Lightship; ESE 92 a long way from Cape Ann to its western finish, and E. by S. ? S. from your ship at Boston 100 miles. This ridge also is of fairly indefinite region, being perhaps 20 miles long in an ESE by WNW course by 1? to three mls wide. Evidently depths are fairly standard from 85 to 95 fathoms, the foot of the ridge being of coarse black sand and getting blue mud in the greater area around it. This is said to be a good cod and cusk ground the year round. GEORGES Location Platt's Bank or New Ledge. This bears E. by N. ? N. from Thacher Tropical island, from which the shoal part of the ledge is distant 53 miles. From Portland Lightship it is 30 miles SSE. to the core of the ground. The bank is about 12 miles very long, NE. and SW.. and about 8 mls wide. The western shoal, which is of small degree and rocky and that has a considerable amount of lifeless shells with it, is found near the center, its range being 29 fathoms. From this shoal on the Southwest Peak is about 11 miles SW. by S. Another shoal lies E. 3 kilometers, having about 30 fathoms over fine sand and pea gravel, which is a very good fall ground for haddock. East-northeast from your western shoal 3 mls brings us to a difficult ridge, with spots of hard soil and pebbles between, in 65-fathom degree, which is a great winter cusk ground, these fish remaining on this page until Apr. Over a great deal of the bank the depths range between 30 to 35 fathoms with a bottom of gravel and rocks. In the edge of the shoaler place the bottom slopes gradually to 50 or 60 fathoms, beyond which it falls suddenly to 80 or 90 fathoms over a dirty bottom. Jeffreys Ledge. Of fairly small dimensions, even though jeffreys Ledge could be considered among the finest minn kota maxxum grounds in the Gulf of Maine. It appears to be an extension in the shoal soil that makes off of in an easterly direction from Cape Ann, it is about 20 a long way long in the NE. and SW. course and about 4 miles wide. Its the southern area of limits is 42? 54' and its north limit 43? north latitude; its western and eastern borders may be placed at 69? 58' and 70? 18' western longitude. The bottom is difficult on the shoaler parts, with gravel and pebbles around the edges. Depths on the bank are from 27 to 35 fathoms, falling to 40 or 50 on the edges. The shoalest water is placed from 4 to 5 miles N. by E. from the buoy, where there is 22 fathoms. Ordinarily there is very little or no tide, with an occasional present SW. You will find, however, solid westerly currents with the weighty easterly winds, and often soon after a period of minor weather without having strong tides there will all of a sudden develop a hefty SW. movement, indicating the approach of the strong northwester. This appears a general tip in the Gulf of Maine and is, probably, prevalent above much of our North Atlantic coast. The Ridge (in the southern component of Fippenies). This is certainly SSE. from your light-ship at Portland 75 miles and has a base of yellow pebbles and mudpebbles and depths of 75 to 95 fathoms. Cod are present here in Jan and Dec; cusk the entire year around, but a majority of numerous in February and March; haddock in December and January; hake in October and September. The length of this bank comes from 4 to 5 miles and the size somewhat lower than 2 kilometers. It is based on an ENE. and WSW. direction. Howard Nunans Ridge. Of similar character to the final, this increases 4 a long way inside of and parallel on it, lying 14 miles from Cape Porpoise on the same bearings (SE. by S. ? S.). This is apparently made up of two shoals, the northern rising to 50 fathoms water over a rocky, broken base about 3 miles long by 1 mile broad, deepening southwesterly to a thin, muddy gully, where are 80 fathoms, and soaring again to 60 fathoms over rocks and cracked ground. The entire ground is all about 8 a long way long with average widths of from 1 to 1? mls. This terrain furnishes good cod angling and haddocking from the fall and early winter months and yet again in the spring several weeks.

Lying about SE. by S. ? 5. from the Isle of Shoals 20 a long way, 13 kilometers S. by W. through the whistling buoy on Jeffreys, and 43 miles S. by W. from Cape Elizabeth can be a broken piece of bottom experiencing from 75 to 85 fathoms of water over it, which is a haddock ground from January to April as well as a cusk and hake ground all the year. Maurice Lubee's Soil. This is outside of New Ledge (Platts Bank) 47 miles SSE. from the lightship at Portland. Extending inside an ENE. and WSW. direction, its limitations are somewhat indefinite. It is actually perhaps 8 miles very long by 3 miles large and has depths from 95 to 110 fathoms across a bottom consisting mostly of mud. A tiny shoal inside the western portion of the Cove of Jeffreys, getting 50 fathoms over a bottom part of glowing blue clay and rocks and rising from your 60 and 70 fathom soundings about it, is about 1? kilometers long by about 3/4 mile wide. This shoal is SSE. from Boon Island 15 miles. It is a winter terrain for cod and haddock. Pollock Rip Reasons. These lay between Pollock Rip Lightship and Shovelful Lightship and increase northward to Pollock Rip Shoal. These grounds are 3 mls long, E. and W., by 2 miles N. and S. The depths range from 4 to 12 fathoms. These are generally fished from Monomoy and also in stormy conditions from Chatham instead of visiting the Crab Ledge. Late early in the year and at the beginning of the slip the cod move inshore. In winter the cod depart Pollock Rip for the deeper water. Morris Ledge. This is situated eastward of Chatham and is a favorite floor for certain cod fishermen in the course of spring and early summer. Schooners and small art operate in this article. [Desk 3--External Fishing Grounds, exhibiting the principle types taken on them.] Jerry Yorks Ridge. This lies just inside and paralleling Jeffreys Ledge WNW. from its shoal water and approximately 5 mls distant from the ledge contributing to 18 mls SE. by S. ? S. from Cape Porpoise. This ground has from 45 to 48 fathoms water on a rocky broken base. It is about 5 mls long, NNE. and SSW., and averages 1? miles wide. This is an excellent cod and haddock ground Inside the fall and up to January, these minn kota maxxum coming back here in the spring months. Nantucket Shoals. This stretch of cafes and much deeper waters in between, roughly triangular in form with its apex at the northern, lies across the western side of the Southern Channel, stretching out S. and SE. through the southern end of Cape Cod and Nantucket Island. From Monomoy Point out Rogers Fishing Floor, on the eastern edge of Phelps Bank, it is actually SSE. 80 miles. Its width from Southeast Rips to the american edge of New South Shoal is 40 miles. The area includes a number of "fishing spots" and shoals, among which the following are the most crucial: Pollock Rip Ground, Crown and Increased Shoal, Great Rip, Davis Bank, Fishing Rip, Old and New South Shoal, and Phelps Bank. About the inner aspects of this soil, particularly, the gill-net fleet operates substantially, mainly inside the full and spring, on northwest Jeffreys 8 to 12 kilometers E. and SE. from Thacher Isle, where the bottom is fine sand and rocks. Other gill-netting grounds are 8 to 15 kilometers NE. by E. from Thacher Tropical island in 22 fathoms on a hard underside of soil and blended material of gravel and yellow sand. The Cove of Jeffreys, NE. by E. 12 to 15 miles from Thacher Isle, is a beloved haddock ground in the spring (April 20 to May 15) in 45 to 70 or even 80 fathoms, although gill nets are not usually fished in additional than 50 fathoms due to the, weight of your nets from the deeper h2o. In the spring (in May and April), the haddock can be found in on Scantum, 10 kilometers NNE. from Thacher Tropical island between Jeffreys Ledge as well as the Isle of Shoals, over a broken

These run NE. and SW., the eastern shoal about 8 miles long by 1 distance wide, the western about 50 % as huge. Fippenies bears E. 1/4 S. from Thacher Tropical island, distant 61 miles; from Portland Lightship, SE. by S. ? S, 57 mls to the western point of the northern shoal in 35 fathoms. Your budget is nearly 10 miles lengthy NE. and SW. and averages 4? miles broad. The bottom is ofpebbles and gravel, and clay, experiencing depths over much of the shoal of around 30 fathoms but also from 36 to 60 fathoms. It is fished by the shoreline fleet in the spring and early on summer. The minn kota maxxum and periods are as on Cashes Bank. Earlier twice as a lot of haddock had been taken right here as on Cashes or on Platts Bank, but this has modified in recent years. Halibut are taken here in acceptable numbers in 45 to 55 fathom depths inJuly and June, and August on the "black gravel" in the european and the southern area of edge. The "white gravel" on the to the north shoal is of very little account like a minn kota maxxum ground, because it is composed largely of the shells of old scallops. The Cod Ridge (formerly Exterior Harris Floor). This is placed NE. from the Northeast Top of New Ledge, distant 7 miles. It extends within an ENE. and WSW. path, the ground reducing and the drinking water deepening to the eastward, the shoal floor having 45 fathoms on a bottom of small pebbles and good black gravel and beach sand, depths increasing in most other instructions to 100 fathoms about the mud and sloping off of somewhat steeply, especially on the southeast part, where the decline is very well-defined. The length of the soil is about 5 miles, the width 1 mile. This is an all-the-year cod ground, the season of greatest abundance being from May 1 to October. The haddock are usually In their greatest phone numbers here from January 1 to April. Probably because the water is not deeply enough to the former, aside from the small seafood, that happen to be of little value for the fishermen; along with the ground is just not muddy adequate for the second option species, evidently no multitude of cusk or hake are taken on this page on the ridge. Both types, however, can be found about the edges in the strong water, the cusk about the sharpest, most difficult part of the underside (perhaps most common in Feb . and March), the hake, as usual, in the muddy components about it. This shore furnishes excellent mackerel sportfishing throughout most of the year when these fish are in north waters. Virtually no gill-netters function here, the distance to market becoming great and the chance of tough weather and the lack of harmless harbor which makes it dangerous for small art. From this expand of shoreline (mostly from off Chatham) there were landed at Boston in the year 1923, 66 fares with a overall of 1,797,826 pounds priced at $76,875. This ridge lies in a SE. and NW. route, extending fairly indefinitely but for at least 10 miles by about 3 miles in width. About the ridge the base is shattered--a hard bottom of black colored gravel, which generally means a great minn kota maxxum spot--the depths here being from 85 to 90 fathoms. There are numerous muddy spots in between these more difficult pieces of ground where soundings run to 100 fathoms or slightly more. The nearby bottom is generally of mud, and the depths average from 100 to 125 fathoms. There are a number of pieces of gravelly hard soil in the location, each of which probably would furnish evenly good minn kota maxxum for cod and cusk at the same months as on the ridge.
