1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08
Fippenies Bank. This consists of two shoals averaging 80 fathoms in depth with a channel of 90
fathoms between them. These run NE. and SW., the eastern shoal about 8 miles long by 1 mile wide,
the western about 50 % as large. Fippenies bears E. 1/4 S. from Thacher Tropical isle, distant 61
miles; from Portland Lightship, SE. by S. ? S, 57 a long way to the traditional western point of the
northern shoal in 35 fathoms. Your budget is nearly 10 miles extended NE. and SW. and averages 4?
miles wide. The bottom is ofgravel and pebbles, and clay, getting depths above much of the shoal of
around 30 fathoms but also from 36 to 60 fathoms. It is fished by the shore fleet early in the year
and earlier summer. The fish and conditions are as on Cashes Bank. It has changed recently, even
though formerly twice as a lot of haddock have been taken here as on Cashes or on Platts Bank.
Halibut are taken here in acceptable numbers in 45 to 55 fathom depths inJune and July, and August
on the "black pea gravel" in the southern and western edge. The "white colored gravel" on the to the
north shoal is of tiny account like a minn kota maxxum ground, since it is composed mainly of the
shells of old scallops.
A compact shoal in the western portion of the Cove of Jeffreys, having 50 fathoms over a base of
azure clay and rocks and rising from the 60 and 70 fathom soundings about it, is all about 1? miles
long by about 3/4 mile large. This shoal is SSE. from Benefit Island 15 miles. It is a winter ground for
haddock and cod.
A small cove makes for a quick distance to the western aspect of Jeffreys Ledge at about 20 miles
from Boon Tropical isle in a SE. by S. ? S. course. The bottom within the cove is broken and muddy,
with depths of around 60 fathoms. Thence, the floor slopes off to the mouth area, where the corners
about the entry are rocky and have 75 and 70 fathom depths. These rocky locations are cusk
grounds inFebruary and January, and Mar, during which several weeks the cove itself usually
furnishes great haddock minn kota maxxum. Outdoors these depths the water deepens westward
over a muddy bottom part, where are from 80 to 90 as well as 100 fathoms of water. Minn Kota
Maxxum this is mainly by trawl and gill nets.
Tillies Bank. [13] This bears E & S from Eastern Position Light just dropping Thacher Island Light,
then 3 miles farther for best sport fishing: and E. by S. ? S. from Thacher Island, Cape Ann, that the
shoal on the middle of the ground minn kota maxxum 74 is distant 18 miles. It is a small difficult
spot with depths of from 25 to 28 fathoms, outside which the h2o deepens to 40 fathoms over a
substantial area. The length of the entire ground is about 10 miles in a E. and W. direction and the
size about 5 miles. Before reaching the mud at still increased depths but an area of shoal drinking
water connects this ground with West Jeffreys, at the side it slips off rapidly to depths of 50 to 60
fathoms. The bottom is rough and rocky within the greater part of the bank. Tillies was earlier
regarded as the best sport fishing grounds off Cape Ann and is still resorted to for cod and haddock
in the fall and spring; for hake within thesummer season and spring season, and slip, and for pollock
in the fall and spring. The fishing is mainly by trawling, together with the gillnetters functioning on
the shoal grounds in under 50 fathoms.
Platt's Bank or New Ledge. This bears E. by N. ? N. from Thacher Tropical isle, from which the shoal
part of the ledge is distant 53 miles. From Portland Lightship it is 30 miles SSE. to the middle of the
ground. Your budget is about 12 miles extended, NE. and SW.. and about 8 mls wide. The western
shoal, which is of small degree and rocky and which includes a considerable amount of deceased
shells on it, is located near the heart, its range being 29 fathoms. With this shoal towards the
Southwest Maximum is about 11 miles SW. by S. Another shoal lies E. 3 kilometers, having about 30
2. fathoms over yellow sand and gravel, which is a excellent fall terrain for haddock. East-northeast in
the western shoal 3 a long way brings us to a rocky ridge, with spots of hard mud and pebbles
between, in 65-fathom depth, which is a okay winter cusk ground, these minn kota maxxum
remaining right here until Apr. Over a lot of the bank the depths range between 30 to 35 fathoms
with a underside of stones and pea gravel. From the edge of the shoaler place the bottom slopes
gradually to 50 or 60 fathoms, beyond which it declines suddenly to 80 or 90 fathoms over a muddy
bottom.
About the inner parts of this terrain, particularly, the gill-net fleet operates extensively, mainly
within the full and spring, on northwest Jeffreys 8 to 12 a long way E. and SE. from Thacher Isle,
where the base is beach sand and stones. Other gill-netting grounds are 8 to 15 mls NE. by E. from
Thacher Island in 22 fathoms on the hard base of mud and mixed material of sand and gravel. The
Cove of Jeffreys, NE. by E. 12 to 15 miles from Thacher Island, is a beloved haddock floor in the
spring (Apr 20 to May 15) in 45 to 70 or even 80 fathoms, though gill nets are not typically fished in
than 50 fathoms due to the, weight of the nets inside the deeper water. In the spring (in April and
might), the haddock are available in on Scantum, 10 mls NNE. from Thacher Isle between Jeffreys
Ledge along with the Isle of Shoals, on the broken base of rocks and glowing blue clay in 55 to 70
fathoms.
Eastern Shoal Water of Cape Ann. This is normally considered an integral part of Jeffreys which is
often spoken of as West Jeffreys by the anglers. It stretches In an ENE. direction from Cape Ann for
a extended distance of from 15 to 18 kilometers. It is, actually, a southwest continuation of Jeffreys
Ledge, the two generating a virtually continuous ridge running NE. from Cape Ann a distance
around 42 miles. Depths about the so-called Eastern Shoal Normal water vary from 20 to 45
fathoms, the base being of rocks, pebbles, and coarse gravel more than most of its extent. Yellow
sand and dirt arise on the corners. The eastern part of the terrain is resorted to with the haddock
fleet during the drop and early on winter, as well as other parts are visited more or less during the
complete year forcod and haddock, and pollock by boats and vessels from Cape Ann and by craft of
various varieties from Portland and Boston-line trawlers, gill-netters, and a few of the new type of
modest otter trawlers, this second option fleet of craft constantly growing in variety.
Jerry Yorks Ridge. This lies just inside and paralleling Jeffreys Ledge WNW. from its shoal water and
about 5 kilometers distant from your ledge and about 18 kilometers SE. by S. ? S. from Cape
Porpoise. This ground has from 45 to 48 fathoms water on a rocky broken bottom part. It is about 5
mls long, NNE. and SSW., and averages 1? mls wide. This is a good cod and haddock ground In the
fall or higher to January, these minn kota maxxum coming back here early in the year months.
Tobins. A name made available to a piece of soil about 20 miles sq . lying S. by E. from the Highland
Light. It runs from about 40 miles to about 60 mls offshore, the depths progressively increasing as
the bottom slopes away equally from the shoreline from 75 to 95 fathoms across a bottom of clay,
beach sand, and pebbles. Cod are taken here in thesummer and spring, and fall, and haddock
inMarch and February, and April. Compared to the grounds off Chatham, this is not that need
considering a hake ground, though a few hake are used here in summer.
The Shoal Ground, stretching out easterly from Thacher Tropical island, has depths from twenty to
thirty fathoms over a bottom of sand and gravel. This area is approximately 15 a long way long by 5
mls wide and is an important pollock ground inside their spawning time as well as a excellent fall
cod-angling ground. It is actually about 12 miles E. by N. from Thacher Island to its center and 21
kilometers SE. by S. from your Isle of Shoals. Flounder draggers also operate on this page on the
shoal ground and all sorts of around Thacher Island but mostly to eastward And southeastward.
3. On the ledgecod and haddock, and cusk are consumed the full spring and winterprobably, winter
and spring furnishing the best sport fishing. There are more or less pollock, and hake constitute an
important part of the get. In these seasons when herring make their appearance during these waters
the seiners make good grabs here, mainly of meals fish, as the big herring are termed by the trade.
The mackerel, also, appear on these grounds and so on the smaller reasons nearer to shore to
westward and northward in good-sized universities, usually from July 1 through September. For
many years the haddock capture from this lender has been of considerable relevance, and this
declaration remains correct for recent years as well.
Lying about SE. by S. ? 5. from the Isle of Shoals 20 kilometers, 13 kilometers S. by W. in the
whistling buoy on Jeffreys, and 43 miles S. by W. from Cape Elizabeth can be a broken component of
bottom possessing from 75 to 85 fathoms of water over it, which is a haddock ground from January
to April as well as a cusk and hake ground all the year.
East side of Cape Cod. The ocean bottom off the east area of Cape Cod is primarily sandy and slopes
away from gradually through the beach, reaching depths of 30 to 40 fathoms at 5 to 7 miles from
land. Below Chatham the slope is even more progressive. Within these limits good catches of cod are
taken at times, and to a less extent the same is true of haddock. Farther away from the shore, in
from 40 to 80 fathoms and coming from a point 8 or 10 miles off the Highlands of Cape Cod to
another point lying 20 miles or higher SSE. from Chatham Lamps, is a constant stretch of excellent
haddock grounds for winter angling. The deep h2o off Chatham furnishes outstanding hake sport
fishing in tumble and summer time.
This banking institution is now generally an Italian boat floor and is made use of by small art from
Boston and Gloucester. Gill-netting here is especially extensive in November and December, mostly
for pollock. Netters operate about 22 kilometers SSE. from Eastern Point in 22 to 25 fathoms on a
difficult bottom. Excellent pollock attracts are made in 25 to 40 fathoms around the southeastern
and eastern slopes within the latter element of November and early December. Haddock are here
from November 1 to March 1 and from Apr 20 to May 15. Cod exist all the 12 months, the largest
school occurring during August, October and September. It really is a cusk terrain from December
to March in the further water. What seems a somewhat unconventional occurrence in these later
many years was the appearance of a considerable college of halibut on the north slope of Stellwagen
over the last half of Apr 1926, many small create getting from 2,000 to 3,000 kilos in their fares.
Fifty-five Fathom Bunch. To the west of Cashes Bank can be a rocky ridge extending ENE. and WSW.
about 4 miles and having a breadth of about 1 mile. This can be mainly a cod floor, the seasons for
the varieties being as on Cashes Bank.
The haddock catch here has decreased off recently, although this was considered one of the most
beneficial minn kota maxxum grounds for cod and haddock in the Gulf of Maine. Hake are very
plentiful during the summer time and often throughout October about the muddy underside near the
benefit. Inside 100 fathoms, over a "punkin" bottom part of stones and gravel, near the mud,
haddock are located from December to March. Cod, pollock, and cusk occur from May to October,
the previous on the rocky and gravelly portions, the second on the strong soundings, using the
Northeast Peak the best summer time ground. This really is an specifically good winter and fall
ground for haddock. Halibut tend to be found in 35 fathoms (small fish) from September through
Nov; also In spring and early summer. No gill netting of importance as yet, even though this ground
is fished by vessels from Cape Cod, Mass., to Cutler, Me., mainly by trawling, some hand-lining.
Clay-based Ridge. At various points about the edges of Jeffreys Ledge are small unattached ridges,
which in their year are good minn kota maxxum grounds. The present piece of ground is 26 miles S.
4. by W. through the lightship at Portland, which course and distance provide us for the northern
benefit. Elsewhere soundings average from 65 to 70 fathoms over a base of difficult clay, while there
is a 50-fathom shoal of small dimensions upon it. The length of the ground is about 4 miles NNE. and
SSW., and the breadth about 1 mile. This furnishes good haddocking in January, February. and
March. the latter month showing the best minn kota maxxum.
Maurice Lubee's Ground. This lies outside of New Ledge (Platts Bank) 47 miles SSE. from the
lightship at Portland. Extending inside an ENE. and WSW. direction, its borders are somewhat
indefinite. It is actually perhaps 8 miles long by 3 miles large and has depths from 95 to 110 fathoms
across a bottom consisting mostly of mud.
This is certainly essentially a cod soil for the entire year, the varieties being most abundant from
May 1 to December. It is a cusk ground each of the year about the hard bottom of the much deeper
parts, March and April showing the most important schools. Hake also are numerous in 70 fathoms
and deeper about the mud in summer and fall.
Jeffreys Ledge. Of relatively small sizing, even though jeffreys Ledge can be considered one of the
best minn kota maxxum grounds in the Gulf of Maine. It appears to be an extension from the shoal
floor that makes away in an easterly direction from Cape Ann, it is about 20 mls long within a NE.
and SW. path and about 4 miles wide. Its the southern area of limits is 42? 54' and its northern limit
43? north latitude; its eastern and traditional western borders may be placed at 69? 70 and 58'? 18'
western longitude. The bottom is difficult on the shoaler parts, with gravel and pebbles on the edges.
Depths on the banking institution are from 27 to 35 fathoms, falling off to 40 or 50 on the edges. The
shoalest water is situated from 4 to 5 miles N. by E. from the buoy, where there is 22 fathoms.
Ordinarily there is little or no tide, with the occasional existing SW. There are actually, however,
powerful westerly currents with the large easterly winds, and often following a period of gentle
weather without having strong tides there will instantly develop a heavy SW. stream, indicating the
approach of any strong northwester. This looks a general principle in the Gulf of Maine and is,
perhaps, prevalent above much of our North Atlantic coast.
John Dyers Ridge. This lies 14 kilometers S. by E. from Toothakers Ridge, 40 a long way S. by E.
from Monhegan Island, and 7 miles NE. from Cashes Bank. It is actually about 5 miles lengthy by 2
miles broad, lying in an ENE. and WSW. route. The water is shoalest in the western advantage,
where come from 45 to 50 fathoms over a distinct, pebbly bottom; thence the earth slopes on the
NE. into 80 and 75 fathoms spanning a hard, gravelly, and muddy bottom, in every other
recommendations falling off sharply to 90 and 100 fathom soundings over a muddy bottom.
Howard Nunans Ridge. Of similar nature to the previous, this goes up 4 a long way inside of and
parallel with it, lying 14 miles from Cape Porpoise on the same bearings (SE. by S. ? S.). This looks
to be made up of two shoals, the northern soaring to 50 fathoms water over a rocky, broken
underside about 3 miles very long by 1 mile broad, deepening southwesterly to a narrow, muddy
gully, where are 80 fathoms, and rising again to 60 fathoms over stones and damaged ground. The
complete ground is approximately 8 mls long with average widths of from 1 to 1? kilometers. This
ground furnishes good cod sportfishing and haddocking within the fall and early winter season and
once more in the spring weeks.
Outer Crab Ledge. The center is about 14 miles ESE from Chatham Lights. It extends about 5 or 6
kilometers in a N. and S. direction and is about 1 mile large. Depths run from 19 to 23 fathoms; the
bottom is difficult. The minn kota maxxum is principally for cod in the winter, early spring and drop.
Vessel minn kota maxxum is principally in the spring.
5. A ridge lying NW. of Cashes Banking institution and nearly parallel with the main banking
institution, only segregated by a filter deep funnel, is about 7 miles long by 1? miles wide. The types
and the months are the same on this page as on Cashes Bank.
Southeast Jeffreys. Off the southeast edge of Jeffreys, about 24 miles SE. from Boon Island, lies a
piece of minn kota maxxum ground having a challenging bottom ofgravel and beach sand, and rocks,
where depths slope out gradually from the 50-fathom soundings near the main body from the bank
towards the 90-fathom tag farther out. This area is an excellent ground for haddock and cod in the
winter months and springtime along with a hake soil in Mar. This angling location is about 3 or 4
miles rectangular and is bounded on all but the american side by muddy bottom part, which is of
little value as a minn kota maxxum ground. Usually there exists good haddocking in Mar on the
outside of Jeffreys, on its southeastern edge and also in the cove between it and Tillies in 70 and 60
fathom depths over a broken and muddy bottom part. This location lies SE ? from the Isle of Shoals,
27 miles to the centre.
[Footnote 13: There has been some supposition as to the source of the fairly unusual brand of this
financial institution. The writer would note that there is an Edward Tillie in the Company of Captain
John Smith when he explored this region in 1614 plus a Tilly (possibly the same person) who run a
sportfishing station at Cape Ann through the years 1624 and 1625.]
Off N and Newburyport. and SW. of your Isle of Shoals are gill-netting reasons that are much used.
Trawling and netting are carried on, beginning in 40 fathoms in February and March and working
off to 70 fathoms off Salisbury Bench in May. Cod are on this ground about two weeks in October
and in Mar and Feb are found in abundance off Boars Mind. Hake are present here every one of the
fall and they are found all along the southeast side of these grounds in depths of 45 to 60 fathoms. A
certain amount of halibut may be consumed in most years at different points on a bottom of hard
gravel in early spring and earlier summer in 35 to 65 fathoms. In most many years a large amount of
mackerel is adopted Jeffreys, notably so in 1925. Herring, also, are usually abundant in "herring
years".
Stellwagen Lender also called Middle Bank. This separates Massachusetts Bay from your open water
of the Gulf of Maine and extends from around Cape Ann nearly to Cape Cod. The center of this
ground bears S by E ? E from Thacher N and Island by W ? W from Highland Gentle, Cape Cod. The
The southern part of Part of the Banking institution is far-away 5? miles from Competition Point
Cape Cod, and its particular northwest prong reaches to within 12 or 15 miles of Eastern Stage Cape
Cod. The shoaler portion, with depths from 9? to 19 fathoms, is 17? miles long in a N by W and S by
E route and has a width of 4 kilometers. This aspect is soft sand but the eastern slope, in depths of
from 25 to 55 fathoms, includes coarse yellow sand gravel and pebbles. On this gravelly slope cod
and haddock have already been taken plentifully over a long term of years, the cod in the tumble and
spring and the haddock in the winter months. Around the southern end of the bank and among this
and Race Position cod abound in fall and winter months. The complete bank is yet another mackerel
floor when the seafood have been in these seas, the best from the season averaging to be from July
15 through Sept.
Obviously the abundance of cod on this terrain is due to the great quantity of shrimps and delicate-shelled
crabs found on the muddy base and on the rocks that compose this ground. There seem to be
many of these deep-water reasons between and about the shoaler grounds, as near Cashes,
Fippenies, and Jeffreys, which obviously serve as fairways over which the schools of hake, cod, and
cusk, move from Georges Lender into the Gulf of Maine in the spring of year.
Another major ridge, paralleling the 100-fathom curve of Georges Financial institution at about 20
6. kilometers N. from it, lies SE by S from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, 40 miles to the center; SE by S
110 miles from Portland Lightship; ESE 92 miles from Cape Ann to the western finish, and E. by S. ?
S. through the ship at Boston 100 miles. This ridge is also of considerably indefinite location, being
possibly 20 kilometers long in a ESE by WNW course by 1? to three a long way wide. Evidently
depths are fairly standard from 85 to 95 fathoms, the foot of the ridge being of coarse black color
sand and having blue dirt in the further area around it. This is said to be a good cod and cusk ground
the season round.
Pollock Rip Grounds. These lie between Pollock Rip Lightship and Shovelful Lightship and extend
northward to Pollock Rip Shoal. These grounds are 3 mls long, E. and W., by 2 miles N. and S. The
depths range from 4 to 12 fathoms. These are typically fished from Monomoy and then in stormy
weather from Chatham instead of going to the Crab Ledge. Late early in the year and at the outset
of the fall the cod move inshore. In winter the cod keep Pollock Rip for the much deeper water.
Wild Cat Ridge. Really heavy tides sweep more than this ground, making it challenging to haul gear
in minn kota maxxum with it, whence, it is said, is available the title. It lies NNE from Highland
Light, Cape Cod, 18 kilometers to its the southern part of edge; SE ? S from Thacher Isle 31 miles;
and is about 7? kilometers long in the north and south direction by about 3? miles wide. The bottom
is difficult, of cracked shells and sand, and depths come from 45 to 60 fathoms. There are 100
fathom depths inside of the terrain and from 100 to 110 fathoms outside of it. But small fished at any
time other than the wintertime seasons, however apparently, it is an all the 12 months ground for
cod, cusk, and haddock.
A comparatively little known and apparently as nevertheless unnamed ridge lies E. by S. 15 a long
way from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, which happens to be reported to be great fishing ground,
particularly for cod and cusk. With both varieties present on this page the year about, the cod is said
to be most ample in Apr and May: and the cusk, as they are the tip on these outlying ridges, appears
in largest phone numbers in April and March. Haddock seem to be relatively rare right here.
On and about each one of these shoals the sail fleet makes excellent catches, generally consisting of
cod but with a good proportion of pollock, also, and in the deeper water close to them, in spring and
summer, a considerable amount of haddock. An occasional sizeable halibut is taken, as well as good
attracts have been claimed. There were observed in the everyday report of your Boston Species of
fish Bureau between May possibly 15 and August1920 and 15, 10 trips created by the smaller
vessels of the halibut fleet that landed fares of from 2,000 to 10,000 pounds of the species with this
area. If the halibut fishery would be adopted here as in other areas, maybe more can be taken. "Rip
minn kota maxxum," as carried out here, is completed "at the drift," moving over the shoals and, as
they shift off from their website, sailing back to repeat the process. The minn kota maxxum are used
by hand-lining with "cockle" lure or by "jigging" the minn kota maxxum with a sparkly piece of
metallic representing a herring or similar seafood, beneath which are establish twin hooks, the minn
kota maxxum getting struck when it is felt analyzing the appeal. This fishery generally is carried on
in the course of July, Could and June and August. In the herring and mackerel seasons these grounds
usually give good sport fishing of these species, the fish usually impressive here from May 15 to July
15.
The Ridge (about the southern part of Fippenies). This really is SSE. from your light-ship at Portland
75 miles and possesses a bottom of yellow mud and pebblespebbles and depths of 75 to 95 fathoms.
Cod are present within December and January; cusk the year around, but many numerous in
February and March; haddock in Dec and January; hake in September and October. The length of
this bank originates from 4 to 5 kilometers and the size somewhat below 2 mls. It lies in an ENE. and
WSW. direction.
7. Big Ridge (near Cashes Bank). This is a broken and rocky piece of bottom operating from the idea of
the southeastern part of the floor, at about 10 mls S. in the buoy on Ammens Rock and roll and about
82 miles SE. ? S. in the lightship at Portland, to a point about 20 miles S. by E. from the buoy named.
Its length is not really to be explained definitely, in fact it is probably higher than here shown. The
size averages about 1? to 2 miles. Depths are from 65 to 80 fathoms and more, increasing gradually
because it goes out of the main banking institution. The species and their months of large quantity
here are as on Cashes Bank. Perhaps this is much more of a cod and cusk ground than is the main
part of Cashes Bank, the cusk getting particularly plentiful during March and Apr. Halibut are also
found within May and June in from 50 to 60 fathoms of water. A considerable amount of the fish
shown in the table in the catch from the area contained in Cashes Financial institution may
adequately have come with this piece of ground.
Nantucket Shoals. This stretch of bars and deeper waters involving, roughly triangular in develop
with its apex at the northern, lies along the western edge of the Southern Channel, stretching S. and
SE. from the southern conclusion of Cape Cod and Nantucket Island. From Monomoy Point to
Rogers Angling Ground, on the eastern edge of Phelps Bank, it can be SSE. 80 miles. Its width from
Southeast Rips to the western edge of New South Shoal is 40 miles. The spot includes several
"sportfishing spots" and shoals, among which the following are the most significant: Pollock Rip
Ground, Crown and Increased Shoal, Excellent Rip, Davis Bank, Angling Rip, New and Old South
Shoal, and Phelps Bank.
Cusk are plentiful here in the spring, with just a few in the slip. Cod are taken each of the year
about, the Spring season school getting the largest. Hake are most numerous In the spring and fall
months, and haddock usually are not common however are most several in winter.
Previously this fishery was practically entirely carried on by trawlers and hands-liners, but the gill-web
fishery on these reasons is of great and steadily growing importance. Of late the larger part of
the haddock catch continues to be taken from the "otter-trawl" technique, this equipment being
managed by steamers of significant size and upon the greater number of distant reasons, such as
Georges Bank, the South Route, and the Western Bank. Exactly the same change to minn kota
maxxum grounds farther overseas has to a great extent occurred in the fleet of larger cruising
vessels, thus leaving Jeffreys and other inshore banks on the smaller art; except that, with the high
prices of haddock and cod in the winter months, it is often profitable for these bigger vessels to
operate off to in close proximity to-by banks for starters set and return to dock the same day.
This shore furnishes exceptional mackerel angling throughout most of the year when these minn
kota maxxum are in upper waters. Basically no gill-netters operate here, the distance to market
simply being great and the chance of hard weather and the lack of secure harbor which makes it
dangerous for small craft. From this expand of shore (mostly from off Chatham) there were landed at
Boston in the year 1923, 66 fares with a complete of 1,797,826 pounds worth $76,875.
Jeffreys Ledge bears S. ? W. from the lightship off Portland, 19 a long way to the upper edge and 22
miles S. in the buoy in the Hue and Cry to the side of the shoal.
About three-Dory Ridge. Away from New Ledge and about midway between it and Harvey Blacks
Ridge is a small ridge about 3 miles long, running NE. and SW., contributing to ? mile wide. This is
placed SE. by S. in the Portland Lightship. 38 mls to the shoal of 55 fathoms, which happens to be
near its center. With this the ground slopes away on all sides to 63 and 65 fathom depths over which
area the bottom is made up of dirt, sand and gravel and rocks. At these reduce depths are located
"pipes" (clay cylinders), the location where the fishing ends suddenly. All about the ridge are depths
of 80 to 100 fathoms on a bottom of mud. This really is almost entirely a cod ground, very good from
8. May possibly to August.
Expected E. in the buoy on Ammens Rock and roll about 12 miles is a ridge that rises from the 100
to 120 fathom depths about it to some depth of approximately 80 fathoms over a bottom of
brokenground and mud, and shells. This shoaler piece is some 3 mls long. N. by E. and S. by NW., by
1 mile broad. It furnishes good minn kota maxxum for cod, hake, and cusk in the spring, Apr being
the best season.
GEORGES Region
[Kitchen table 3--Outside Minn Kota Maxxum Grounds, showing the principle types taken with
them.]
Morris Ledge. This is situated eastward of Chatham which is a favorite ground for certain cod
fishermen in the course of spring and early summer season. Schooners and small create operate in
this article.
This ridge lies in a SE. and NW. course, extending fairly indefinitely but for at least 10 miles by
about 3 miles in width. About the ridge the base is shattered--a hard underside of black gravel,
which usually means a good fishing spot--the depths here being from 85 to 90 fathoms. There are
numerous dirty spots between these tougher pieces of ground where soundings run to 100 fathoms
or slightly more. The nearby bottom is usually of soil, and the depths average from 100 to 125
fathoms. There are a number of pieces of gravelly hard terrain in the vicinity, each of which
probably would furnish just as good sportfishing for cod and cusk in the same months as about the
ridge.
Harvey Blacks Ridge. This really is SE. ? S. from the lightship off Portland, distant 42 miles, and SE.
from New Ledge, distant 8 miles. From Glovers Rock, off Little Point, Me. this ridge lies SE. by S. ?
S. 41 miles. It extends in a ENE. and WSW. route about 4 miles very long by I mile large. Depths
common 70 to 100 fathoms over a underside of discolored clay and gravel. Cod are taken in this
article all the year. Haddock are found in the serious water in the spring: cusk all of the year in deep
normal water, together with hake in summertime, also in the muddy bottom part in strong water.
Pollock and other area-schooling minn kota maxxum are found in their proper season.
The Cod Ridge (formerly Exterior Harris Soil). This is NE. from the Northeast Peak of New Ledge,
distant 7 miles. It extends in an ENE. and WSW. route, the ground reducing and the water
deepening for the eastward, the shoal terrain having 45 fathoms on a bottom of small pebbles and
great black sand and gravel, depths increasing in most other instructions to 100 fathoms around the
mud and sloping off of somewhat steeply, especially in the southeast aspect, where the decline is
very sharp. The length of the earth is about 5 miles, the width 1 mile. It is an all-the-year cod
ground, the season of greatest plethora being from May 1 to December. The haddock are usually
Within their greatest amounts here from January 1 to Apr. Apparently no large number of cusk or
hake are taken here around the ridge, maybe because the drinking water is not strong enough for
that former, except for the small minn kota maxxum, that happen to be of very little value for the
fishermen; and the ground is just not muddy ample for the second option species. Both kinds,
however, are found about the corners in the deep water, the cusk around the sharpest, most
challenging part of the underside (perhaps most typical in February and Mar), the hake, as usual,
around the muddy parts about it.
